  • Strength relationships are presented through experimental data from the concrete strength tests in this study. Various strength tests such as the compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength and the modulus of elasticity are included. An experimental work was performed to determine the various strength characteristics for various mix designs. Three different coarse aggregates such as granite, limestone, sandstone were used and included were fine aggregates such as natural sand, washed sand and crushed sand. Also included was cement amount as experimental variable. It was confirmed that each strength value with respect to curing time is to follow a typical strength development curve. With this somewhat reliable test results various strength relationships such as flexural strength-compressive strength, splitting tensile strength-compressive strength, modulus of elasticity-compressive strength, splitting tensile strength-flexural strength were analyzed through statistics. Experimental data were well fitted to the 0.5-power relationship of flexural strength and compressive strength which has been commonly accepted. The splitting tensile strength is expected to be best in the linear relationship from the flexural strength data. Finally splitting tensile strength was found to be proportional to the 0.87 power of the cylindrical compressive strength.

  • When the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member is evaluated, the effect of member size is usually not considered. For various types of loading, however, the strength always decreases with the increment of member size. In this paper the size effect of a flexural compression member is investigated by experiments. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment was tested using three different sizes of specimens with a compressive strength of 528 kg/$cm^2$. According to test results the size effect on flexural compressive strength was apparent, and more distinct than that for uniaxial compressive strength of cylinders. Finally a model equation was derived using regression analyses with experimental data.

  • Relationship between growth rate and wood quality was investigated by mechanical properties with Alnus glutinosa L. (24 years old) from 4 different origins of seeds (Bulgary, Italy, United Kingdom and Yugoslavia). Compression strength was in the range of $231{\sim}326kgf/cm^2$, and there was some differences among different origins of seed. Wood cultivated from the seeds of Italy, United Kingdom, and Bulgary showed higher growth rate and had lower compression strength and compression young's modulus. Wood from Yugoslavia seed had the fastest growth rate with higher strength than other three origins of seed. Bending strength was in the range of $426{\sim}727kgf/cm^2$, and there was some differences among the origin of seed. Higher growth rate wood showed higher bending strength and young's modulus than other woods. Trees cultivated from Yugoslavia seed had two times in diameter than other different origins of seeds, also have compressive strength, bending strength than other origins, which can be recommended as best cultivar in Alnus glutinosa L.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties and the neutron shielding rate of concrete with the borosilicate glass and the amorphous boron steel fiber were investigated. The measures of this investigation includes air contents, slump loss, compressive strength, static modulus of elasticity, compressive toughness, flexural strength, flexure toughness and neutron shielding rate. As a result, the neutron shielding rate of the concrete with borosilicate glasses increased even though the compressive strength and flexural strength decreased in comparison with that of plain concrete. Also, the mechanical toughness and the neutron shielding rate of the concrete with amorphous boron steel fiber increased in comparison with that of plain concrete.

  • This study investigates the influence of hooked-end steel fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio on the mechanical properties, such as compressive and flexural performance, of concrete with specified compressive strength of 30MPa. Three types of hooked-end steel fibers with aspect ratios of 64, 67 and 80 were selected. The flexural tests of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) prismatic specimens were conducted according to EN 14651. The compressive performance of SFRC with different volume fractions (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75%) were evaluated through standard compressive strength test method (KS F 2405). Experimental results indicated that the flexural strength, flexural toughness, fracture energy of concrete were improved as steel fiber volume fraction increases but there is no unique relationship between steel fiber volume fraction and compressive performance. The flexural and compressive properties of concrete incorporating hooked-end steel fiber with aspect ratio of 64 and 80 are a little better than those of SFRC with aspect ratio of 67. For each SFRC mixture used in the study, the residual flexural tensile strength ratio defined in Model Code 2010 was more than the limit value to be able to substitute rebar or welded mesh in structural members with the fiber reinforcement.

  • This paper investigates the effect of high strength hooked-end steel fiber content and aspect ratio on the compressive and flexural performance of concrete. A total of ten mixtures were prepared and tested. Concretes with specific compressive strength of 30 MPa were reinforced with three different aspect ratios (l/d) of steel fibers 64, 67, and 80 and three different percentages of steel fibers 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75% by volume of concrete. Tensile strengths of steel fibers with l/d of 64, 67, and 80 are 2,000, 2,400, and 2,100 MPa, respectively. The compressive and flexural properties of plain and steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) mixtures were evaluated and compared. The experimental results indicated that the incorporation of high-strength hooked-end steel fibers had significant effects on the compressive and flexural performance of concrete. With the increase of steel fiber content, compressive performances, such as Poisson's ratio and toughness, of concrete were improved. The steel fibers with the least l/d of 67 resulted in a larger enhancement of compressive performances. The residual flexural strength, that is, post-cracking flexural resistance and toughness, of concrete is mainly depended on the dosage and aspect ratio of steel fibers. The residual flexural strength at serviceability (SLS) and ultimate limit state (ULS) defined in fib Model Code 2010 (MC2010) is increased as the fiber content and aspect ratio increase.

  • The current AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 specifications have been found to underestimate the flexural strength of longitudinally reinforced plate girders. This is because the web-flange interaction is not considered appropriately when a web is reinforced. The buckling strength of compression flange increases due to the improved rotational restraint to the compression flange. Also, the compression flange and the longitudinal stiffener could constrain the web rotation, so that a certain area of the web reaches yield strength. In this study, a model for evaluating the flexural strength is proposed for plate girders reinforced with one line of longitudinal stiffeners, considering the increase of the buckling strength of the compression flange and the actual stress distribution of the web. The flexural strengths of the conventional steel(SM490) and the high-strength steel(HSB800) plate girders were evaluated from the nonlinear analysis and the applicability of the proposed model was analyzed.

  • Five concrete compressive stress-strain models have been analyzed to check the validity of the strength method for determining the nominal moment of strengthened members using commercially available computer language. The results show that the concrete stress-strain models do not influence on the flexural analysis. The moment of a strengthened member obtained from the flexural analysis at concrete compressive strain reaching 0.003 is well agreed with nominal moment using the strength method. The flexural analysis results show that when the steel reinforcement, FRP ratio, FRP failure strain, and concrete failure compressive strain are relatively lower, the strength method overestimates the flexural capacity of the strengthened members.
