  • It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values using three point bending test(TPB) proposed by RILEM committees because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initiation load in the disk test. In this paper, the fracture properties of high strength concrete disks with center-crack was investigated. For this purpose, the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). And the experimental fracture locus was compared with theoretical fracture locus. Also, the results of fracture properties for the degree of concrete strength are presented. It is concluded from this study that results from FEA with maximum stress theory were compared well with the results from experiment. And the degree of concrete strength was contributed to the crack initiation load and fracture toughness, but was not contributed to the failure angle. Also, The discrepancy of fracture locus between the maximum stress theory and the experiment for concrete is considered to depend upon a large energy requirement for inducing the mixed-mode and sliding mode fractures.

  • Mechanical properties and neutron shielding performance of concrete with amorphous boron steel fiber have been investigated in this study. The measurement of this investigation includes air contents, slump loss, compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural toughness and neutron shielding rate. Four different fiber volume fractions were selected ranging from 0.25% to 1.0% by volume for the amorphous boron steel fibers. The testing results showed that the flexural toughness and the neutron shielding rate were increase with the increase of volume fraction for amorphous boron steel fiber. Based on the result, it is concluded that the concrete with the amorphous boron steel fiber can be effectively applied to shield the neutron and to improve mechanical properties.

  • Various methods have been used to reinforce the cementitious material such as mortar and concrete that have weak tensile strength. Major reinforcing method is to mix matrix with fibers which have strong tensile strength. Recently, micro-fiber reinforced mortar has been studied which removes coarse aggregate and uses micro-fiber with small diameter in order to homogenize the matrix properties and maximize the performance of fiber. Performance of micro-fiber reinforced mortar showing multiple cracking behavior is hardly represented only by the flexural toughness. Therefore, This paper reports the cracking behavior as well as mechanical behavior for various mixtures which have different fiber type and mixture proportions to find the proper parameter representing the cracking characteristic. Correlations between flexural toughness and various cracking characteristics such as cracking area, width and number are explored. As a result, it is found that flexural toughness, volume of fiber and number of cracks are suitable for representing the characteristics of micro-fiber reinforced mortar.

  • The purpose of this study are to evaluated bond, flexural properties and control of plastic shrinkage cracking of crimped type synthetic fiber with amplitude 6 mm and height 1.8 mm reinforced cement based composites. Bond and flexural test were conducted in accordance with the JCI-SF 8 and JCI SF-4 standard, respectively. The plastic shrinkage cracking test was conducted for evaluating the effect of fiber in reducing shrinkage cracking in cement based composites. Test results indicated that the crimped typel synthetic fibers performed significantly better than the straight type fiber in terms of interface toughness and pullout load and the crimped type synthetic fibers improved the flexural toughness of concrete. Also, the increasing the crimped type synthetic fiber volume fraction from 0.00% to 1.00% improved the plastic shrinkage cracking resistance. Specially, the effect of control of plastic shrinkage cracking is excellent at the more than 0.5% fibre volume fraction.

  • This study was performed to verify the properties of concrete used recycled aggregate(0, 30%, 50%). Also, to improve the brittle fracture, energy absorption and apparent ductility of concrete, we added polypropylene fibers(0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0% by volume of concrete). As the experimental results, adding 30% recycled aggregates and 0.5% polypropylene fibers to concrete mixes enhances the properties of both compressive strength and toughness.

  • Leakage in the structure due to the irregular flow of groundwater in the underground structure penetrates into internal spaces such as underground parking lots and basement through underground walls, which is expensive in terms of maintenance of the building. In this study, various composite waterproofing methods installed on the outer walls of underground structures were selected to evaluate the structural performance of composite specimens due to bending behavior through experiments and analysis on bending test behavior on concrete attachment surfaces.

  • This study can be used to produce structurally efficient recycled PET fiber from used waste PET bottles and evaluated the bond performance of the three type of recycled PET fiber and cement matrix. Also, the flexural tests were performed on concrete reinforced using the three type of recycled PET fibers. The test results showed that the recycled PET fiber was significantly increased bond strength. The flexural test results are demonstrated that recycled PET fibers improved the flexural toughness of concrete. Based on the bond and flexural test results, the bond and flexural performance of embossed type recycled PET fibers were significantly better than those of the other shape fibers.

  • This study was carry out to evaluate the effect of flexural behavior according to using hybrid steel fiber in UHPC. The evaluation of the flexural behavior of UHPC using hybrid fibers showed that the admixing of hybrid steel fibers at a volumic ratio of 2% increased the flexural strength by more than 27% (maximum 50%) compared to the use of steel fibers only. A ratio of 1.5% was seen to provide flexural strength exceeding the current strength of UHPC.

  • Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.

  • Ring-type steel fibers (RSFs) of the closed circular shape, have different resistance mechanisms other than straight steel fibers. RSFs also maintain the same value of the orientation factor for the plane enclosed by the fiber ring perimeter. In this research, comparative studies were performed for the panels reinforced with RSFs and with straight steel fibers of $15kg/m^3$ and $30kg/m^3$, respectively. Resisting mechanisms of RSFs were identified and higher toughness indices were experimentally observed for the concrete panels reinforced with RSFs than with straight steel fibers. Orientation factor for the RSF was suggested. It was found that RSFs were more effective in increasing toughness for the panel specimens with relatively thinner thickness than beam specimens.
