  • An AU-composite beam based on U-shaped steel beams and steel plate anchors of type A was developed. The composite beam reduced the height of the building floor and construction cost. In addition, it decreased the length of construction work, and improved the flexural strength and stiffness as a form of tubes. In this study, AU-composite beams were tested directly and their performance was evaluated through bending experiments. The strength of the specimens was increased initially by linear loads and reached a maximum strength due to destruction of the concrete slab. All of the experiments showed more than 85% of the maximum stress and performed gentle movement. In addition, there was good composite behavior with the steel plate anchor that had excellent composite effects and reached full strength until the maximum strength was reached. When the thickness of the steel plate was increase, the flexural stiffness and strength of the specimen were improved. Therefore, the flexural strength of AU-composite beams can be estimated using the flexural strength formula according to the KBC 2016.

  • This research investigated the mechanical performance of slurry infiltrated high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite (SI-HPFRCC) with high volume blast furnace slag powder. Hooked-end steel fibers (volume fraction of 6.4%) were used for the fabrication of SI-HPFRCC. A series of mechanical performance test was conducted including strength and toughness of SI-HPFRCC in compressive and flexural mode at four different ages. Compressive and flexural strength tests of the slurry matrix at the same ages were also conducted in order to evaluate fiber reinforcing effect on the mechanical performance. The flexural response of SI-HPFRCC shows an increasing brittleness with age. The compressive response also shows an increasing brittleness with age but the degree of brittleness is much lower than the flexural case. In terms of strength, SI-HPFRCC shows about 140~190% of compressive strength improvement and 440~500% flexural strength improvement comparing to the slurry matrix.

  • This study had a focus on investigating technical validity of Two-Lift Concrete Pavements which had never been constructed in Korea in order to olve the problem of existing concrete pavements. This study found out the application of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) which was one of ew techniques. Also, optimal steel fiber contents and pavement thickness were determined. This study also measured compressive strengths, lexural strengths, toughness indexes, tensile strengths and fatigue strengths to estimate the performance of SFRC of according to results of aboratory experiments, slumps and air contents of concrete specimens the standards satisfied and compressive strengths to open traffic. At bending ests, Toughness Index of SFRC increased but flexural strength didn’'t increase as compared with non-steel fiber concretes. And, energy absorption of SFRC was very good and SFRC showed improvement in freezing and thawing resistances. To complete this research, we will evaluate the pplication methods and performance of SFRC at field section.

  • Ultimate flexural buckling strength of cylindrical steel shells for the wind turbine tower structure was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and type of steel on the ultimate flexural strength of cylindrical shell were analyzed. The flexural strengths of cylindrical shells obtained by FEA were compared with design flexural strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and AISI. The shell buckling modes recommended in DNV-RP-C202 and the out-of-roundness tolerance and welding induced imperfections specified in Eurocode 3 were used in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometrical imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 60 to 210 were considered and shells are assumed to be made of SM520 or HSB800 steel.

  • This study presents basic information on the mechanical properties and long-term deformations of high-strength steel fiber reinforced concrete(HSFRC). The Influence of steel fiber on modulus of elasticity, compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strength, and drying shrinkage and creep of HSFRC are investigated, and flexural fracture toughness is evaluated. Test results show that Test results show that the effect of steel fibers on the compressive strength is negligible, and the modulus of elasticity of HSFRC increased with the increase of fiber volume fraction. And the effect of fiber volume fraction($V_f$) and aspect ratio($l_f/d_f$) on tensile strength, flexural strength and toughness is extremely prominent. It is observed that the flexural deflection corresponded to ultimate load increased with the increase of $V_f$ and $l_f/d_f$, and due to fiber arresting cracking, the shape of the descending branch of load-deflection tends towards gently. Also, the effect of addition of various amounts of fiber on the creep and shrinkage is obvious. Especially, the effect of adding fibers to high-strength concrete is more pronounced in reducing the drying shrinkage than the creep.

  • To evaluate the fiber orientation characteristics and estimate its effect on the flexural strength of steel fiber reinforced ultra high strength concrete with directions of concrete placing, we developed an image processing technique and carried out the flexural test to quantify the effect of fiber orientation characteristics on the flexural strength as well. The image processing technique developed in this study could evaluate quantitatively the fiber orientation property by the use of dispersion coefficient, the number of fibers in a unit area, and fiber orientation. It was also found that the fiber orientation characteristics were dependent on the direction of concrete placing. Fiber orientation characteristic was revealed to strongly affect the ultimate flexural strength, while hardly affecting the first cracking strength. Theoretical model for flexural strength was applied to compare with test results, which exhibited a good agreement.

  • The objective of the present study is to provide statistical resistance statistics for steel-concrete composite plate girder sections under positive and negative moments. Statistical properties on yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and fracture toughness of domestic structural steel products, gathered from an analysis of over 16,000 samples, were evaluated. Using the steel samples for the plate girder, the bias factor and the coefficient of variation of the ultimate flexural resistance for representative composite plate girder sections under positive and negative flexures were presented. In calculating the ultimate flexural resistance of the composite section, the moment curvature relationships were developed using the incremental load approach considering material nonlinearity for the steel girder. The predicted statistics can be used in the future for the efficient calibration of LRFD code.

  • Slump flow, compressive strength, flexural strength and drying shrinkage were measured to evaluate workability and mechanical performance of geopolymer. Experimental parameters include the addition of gypsum, blending ratio of blast furnace slag and fly ash and addition of shrinkage reducing agent. Geopolymer using blast furnace slag mixed with gypsum showed larger slump flow than blast furnace slag without gypsum. The slump flow when blending ratio of blast furnace slag and fly ash is 5:5 tended to be larger than the slump flow when blending ratio is 8:2. Geopolymer using blast furnace slag without gypsum showed higher compressive strength and flexural strength than blast furnace slag mixed with gypsum. Compressive strength and flexural strength tended to be higher when blending ratio of blast furnace slag and fly ash was 8:2 than when blending ratio was 5:5. Drying shrinkage decreased with increasing fly ash and blast furnace slag without gypsum, and it was found that shrinkage reducing agent is effective to reduce drying shrinkage of geopolymer.

  • In this paper, flexural resistance of hybrid girder under uniform bending moment was evaluated, which is composed of HSB800 and HSB600 steel for the flange and web, respectively. Doubly-symmetric and monosymmetric sections with noncompact or compact flange and slender, noncompact or compact web were considered. Nonlinear analyses with 3-dim. shell element model were performed to determine the 'flexural resistance of section' and the 'lateral torsional buckling strength' by taking initial imperfection and residual stress into account. The numerical results were compared with the AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 specifications and also the applicability of AASHTO LRFD appendix A6 was examined for the sections with noncompact and compact web.

  • This paper describes ultimate load tests which were performed to show the effects of prestress loss and tendon corrosion on the flexural strength of post-tensioned concrete beams and the occurrence of wire fracture. Five test specimens were fabricated in laboratory with the variations of the prestress of tendons and the loss of tendon area. For two specimens, small area of tendon at the center of the beam was exposed by using diameter 25mm drill and the exposed tendon was corroded using accelerated corrosion equipment. During the tests, deflections, crack width, and strain changes were measured and acoustic events were monitored with two acoustic sensors. Tests results show that the ultimate flexural strength of test specimens with corroded tendons is smaller than the predicted flexural strength which is calculated considering the loss of tendon area. It is considered that estimation of flexural strength of PSC beams with corroded tendons is very complicated just based on the loss of tendon area obtained by one-side visual inspection.
