  • The LPI fuel filter housings used in automobiles were made from conventional die castings but have recently been developed by cold forging to improve the weight and durability. On the other hand, a sink may develop at the core of the forged product due to the resulting T-shape, which not only reduces the aesthetics, but also increases the post-processing cost of the product. Therefore, this research focused on methods to predict and mitigate sink development and progression during the T-shape forging process. Finite element analysis of the forging process was first performed to determine the optimal initial workpiece devoid of burrs and underfills. An accurate sink prediction was then obtained via metal flow analysis, which was a result of the finite element simulation. Through finite element analysis, it was confirmed that sink development is a product of the differences in nodal velocities arising from the T-shaped forging process. Consequently, a pad was inserted beneath the sink to minimize these velocity differences. The results yielded significant improvement with regard to the sink defect. This method was practically applied to an industrial site to validate the sink improvement.

  • The mammogram provides the way to observe detailed internal organization of breasts to radiologists for the early detection. This paper is mainly focused on efficiently detecting the Microcalcification's Region Of Interest(ROI)s. Breast cancers can be caused from either microcalcifications or masses. Microcalcifications are appeared in a digital mammogram as tiny dots that have a little higher gray levels than their surrounding pixels. We can roughly determine the area which possibly contain microcalifications. In general, it is very challenging to find all the microcalcifications in a digital mammogram, because they are similar to some tissue parts of a breast. To efficiently detect microcalcifications ROI, we used four sequential processes; preprocessing for breast area detection, modified multilevel thresholding, ROI selection using simple thresholding filters and final ROI selection with two stages of neural networks. The filtering process with boundary conditions removes easily-distinguishable tissues while keeping all microcalcifications so that it cleans the thresholded mammogram images and speeds up the later processing by the average of 86%. The first neural network shows the average of 96.66% recognition rate. The second neural network performs better by showing the average recognition rate 98.26%. By removing all tissues while keeping microcalcifications as much as possible, the next parts of a CAD system for detecting breast cancers can become much simpler.

  • This study was performed in Seolmacheon basin to evaluate the adequacy of GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System) and GLEAM (Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model) evapotranspiration data. The verification data necessary for the evaluation of adequacy were calculated after processing the latent heat flux data produced in the Seolmacheon basin with the Koflux program. In order to gap-fill the empty period, alternative evapotranspiration was calculated in three ways: FAO-PM (Food and Agriculture Organization-Penman Monteith), MDV (Mean Diurnal Variation) and Kalman Filter. This study selected Kalman Filter method as the data gap-filling method because it showed the best Bias and RMSE among the three methods. The amount of GLDAS spatial evapotranspiration was calculated as Noah (version 2.1) with a time interval of 3 hours and a spatial resolution of 0.25°. The amount of GLEAM spatial evapotranspiration was calculated using GLEAM (version 3.1a). This study evaluated the spatial evapotranspiration of GLDAS and GLEAM as the evapotranspiration based on eddy covariance. As a result of evaluation, GLDAS spatial evapotranspiration showed better results than GLEAM. Accordingly, in this study, the GLDAS method was proposed as a method for calculating the amount of spatial evapotranspiration in the Seolmacheon basin.

  • The 1995 Kobe earthquake caused a massive damage to the Port of Kobe. Therefore, it was pointed out that it was impossible to design port structures for Level II (Mw 6.5) earthquakes with quasi-static analysis and Allowable Stress Design methods. In Japan and the United States, where earthquakes are frequent, the most advanced design standards for port facilities are introduced and applied, and the existing seismic design standards have been converted to performance-based design. Since 1999, the Korean Port Seismic Design Act has established a definition of necessary facilities and seismic grades through research on facilities that require seismic design and their seismic grades. It has also established a performance-based seismic design method based on experimental verification. In the performance-based seismic design method of the breakwater proposed in this study, the acceleration time history on the surface of the original ground was subjected to a fast Fourier transform, followed by a filter processing that corrected the frequency characteristics corresponding to the maximum allowable displacement with respect to performance level of the breakwater and the filtered spectrum. The horizontal seismic coefficient for the equivalent static analysis considering the displacement was calculated by inversely transforming (i.e., subjected to an inverse fast Fourier transform) into the acceleration time history and obtaining the maximum acceleration value. In addition, experiments and numerical analysis were performed to verify the performance-based seismic design method of breakwaters suitable for domestic earthquake levels.

  • If a dangerous situation arises in a place where out of reach from the human, UAVs can be used to determine the size and location of the situation to reduce the further damage. With this in mind, this paper sets the minimum value of the roll, pitch, and yaw using beta flight to detect the UAV's smooth hovering, integration, and derivative (PID) values to ensure that the UAV stays horizontal, minimizing errors for safe hovering, and the camera uses Open CV to install the Raspberry Pi program and then HSV (color, saturation, Brightness) using the color palette, the filter is black and white except for the red color, which is the closest to the fire we want, so that the UAV detects the image in the air in real time. Finally, it was confirmed that hovering was possible at a height of 0.5 to 5m, and red color recognition was possible at a distance of 5cm and at a distance of 5m.

  • This paper proposes new preprocessing algorithm to extract minutiae in the process of fingerprint recognition. Fingerprint images quality enhancement is a topic phase to ensure good performance in a topic phase to ensure good performance in a Automatic Fingerprint Identification System(AFIS) based on minutiae matching. This paper proposes an algorithm to improve fingerprint image preprocessing to extract minutiae accurately based on directional filter. We improved the suitability of low quality fingerprint images to better suit fingerprint recognition by using valid ridge vector and ridge probability of fingerprint images. With the proposed fingerprint improvement algorithm, noise is removed and presumed ridges are more clearly ascertained. The algorithm is based on five step: computation of effective ridge vector, computation of ridge probability, noise reduction, ridge emphasis, and orientation compensation and frequency estimation. The performance of the proposed approach has been evaluated on two set of images: the first one is self collected using a capacitive semiconductor sensor and second one is DB3 database from Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC).

  • The focus control mechanism of the multi-purpose camera can be required for the better quality image acquisition. A good image acquisition through the hardware system including the optics and image sensor, has to be processed before the post correction for improvement of image quality. In the case of the high-resolution satellite camera, the focus control is not a necessity, unlike a normal camera due to a fixed optical system, but may be required due to various reasons. Although there is a basic focus control method using a motor for satellite electronic optical camera, a focus control method using thermal control can be a good alternative because of its various advantages in design, installation, operation, contamination, high reliability and etc. In this paper, we describe the design method and implementation results for the focus control mechanism using the temperature sensor and heater installed in the telescope structure. In the proposed focus control method, the measured temperature information is converted into temperature data by the Kalman filter and the converted temperature data are used in PI controller for the thermal focus control.

  • Although torrents and P2P sites or web hard are frequently used by users simply because they can be easily downloaded freely or at low prices, domestic torrent and P2P sites or web hard are very sensitive to copyright. Techniques have been researched and applied. Among these, title and string comparison method filtering techniques that block the number of cases such as file titles or combinations of key words are blocked by changing the title and spacing. Bypass is easy through. In order to detect and block illegal works for copyright protection, a technique for normalizing modified file titles is essential. In this paper, we compared the detection rate by searching before and after normalizing the modified file title of illegal works and normalizing the file title. Before the normalization, the detection rate was 77.72%, which was unfortunate while the detection rate was 90.23% after the normalization. In the future, it is expected that better handling of nonsense terms, such as common date and quality display, will yield better results.

  • The SPICE circuit analysis program has a limited math capability and, in general, cannot be used for RF and microwave simulation because a complex arithmetic is required to compute S-parameters from node voltages. This paper presents two test bench models that can be used to obtain node voltages proportional to incident, reflected, and transmitted signals. From SPICE computed node voltages, S-parameters are computed using the math capability of the PSPICE post processor, PROBE, as an example for a low-pass filter consisting of transmission line sections. The results of this example are compared with another high frequency circuit analysis program, TOUCHSTONE. The difference between the results of these two programs in magnitude was less than 0.003 and in phase was a few tenths of a degree. By using these test benchs to simulate a filter, RF and microwave analysis can be made with the SPICE, which can be a cost-effective and readily available computational tool for educators and practicing engineers.
