A wind tunnel test for 1/86 scaled down model of the NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine was conducted to investigate the wake and flow fields. Deficit of flow speed in the wake region and variations of the turbulence intensity were measured using a hot wire anemometer at rated tip speed ratio of 11.4 m/s and a rotational speed of 1,045 rpm. According to the test results, velocity deficits along both of lateral and vertical directions were recovered within 2 rotor radii downstream from the rotating disc plane. The tip vortices effect was negligible after 5 rotor radii downstream from the rotating plane. Turbulence intensities showed maximum value around the blade tip, and decreased rapidly after one radius apart from the rotating plane, and those values were preserved until 6 rotor radii downstream.

This paper deals with a theoretical and experimental method for the design of a biased asymmetric pre-swirl stator propulsion system which is an energy saving device by recovering a propeller rotational energy. In the case of slow-speed ships, the upward flow is generated along the afterbody hull form at the propeller plane. The generated upward flow cancels the rotating flow of the propeller at the starboard part while it increases at port part. The present biased asymmetric pre-swirl stator propulsion system consists of three blades at the port and one blade at the starboard which can recover the biased rotating flow effectively. This paper provides the design concept which gives more simple and a high degree of efficiency and the experimental results for the compound propulsion system.

In order to observe the wake interaction between tip vortices generated by a two-bladed rotor with slightly different pitch angles, the velocity components of the tip vortices were measured by using a two-dimensional LDV system. It was observed that the swirl velocity components of the ensuing blade deviated from the Vatistas' n = 2 vortex model and the axial velocity components of the preceding blade deviated from the Gaussian profile. It was also found that in the wake-age range of $200^{\circ}$ to $240^{\circ}$, the filament of the ensuing blade tip vortex was stretched as result of the closing in of two vortices. The results from these observations suggest the possibility that a similar wake interaction is generated in actual rotor blades, especially, in the ones with articulated hubs.

The vortex lattice method was adopted to predict the aerodynamic performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine. For this simulation. the rotor blade was divided into many panels both in chordwise and spanwise direction and then replaced by horseshoe vortices. The wake was divided into two parts of near wake and far wake : the near wake was assumed as helical vortex line elements and the far wake was modeled by semi-infinite circular vortex cylinder. The induced velocity components were calculated by the Biot-Savart law. By this way the power coefficient was obtained and represented as a function of the tip speed ratio. The numerical results obtained were compared with those of the other methods and experimental results and showed good agreement with experimental results.

A series of design, theoretical analysis and model test procedures is presented for the development of an axisymmetric stator-propeller system. A preswirl stator is located in front of a propeller in order to improve the propulsion efficiency by cancellation of the slip stream rotational velocity due to the propeller. Model test results show that propulsion efficiency gain due to the symmetric stator-propeller system is about 3% compared to the single propeller. This efficiency gain would increase for full scale application since the pressure drag coefficient of the stator would decrease due to increasement of turbulent intensity behind the hull wake and increasement of Reynolds number.

This paper deals with a theoretical method for the design of a biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system which has been used to increase efficiency by the recovery of a propeller slipstream rotational energy by the counter rotating flow of a stator. In the case of full slow-speed ship, the upward flow is generated at the propeller plane by the after body hull form. The generated upward flow cancells the rotating flow of the propeller at the starboard part while it increases at port part. A biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system consists of three blades at the port and one blade at the starboard which can recover the biased rotating flow effectively. This paper provides the design concept which gives more simple and a high degree of efficiency. The model tests for the designed compound propulsion system will be carried out later.
Numerical simulations were performed to study the stall characteristics of turboprop aircraft. Stall characteristics were qualitatively investigated using the computational results of various configurations based on the combinations of propeller and high lift device. For the analysis of stall characteristics, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was used and the relative motion between propeller and wing was simulated using sliding mesh technique. For the cruise configurations, major flow separation was occurred at the fuselage/wing fairing and the separation was reduced under propeller slipstream condition. For the high lift device configuration without propeller, major flow separation was occurred at the outboard side of nacelle. With rotating propeller, early stall onset due to low relative velocity and high effective angle of attack was observed on the outboard wing section. Regarding rotating direction of propeller, inboard-down direction was preferred due to the stall delay effect of propeller slipstream.

Wind tunnel test for a small scale electric ducted fan with a 104mm diameter was conducted to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics when it was used as a propulsion system of tilt-propeller UAV. Experimental conditions were derived from flight conditions of a sub-scaled OPPAV. Forces and moments of the ducted fan model were measured by a 6-axis balance and 3-dimensional wake vectors which could induce an aerodynamic influence in the vehicle were measured by 5-hole probes. Thrust and torque on hover and cruise conditions were measured and analyzed to drive out the operating conditions when it was applied in the sub-scaled OPPAV. On transition conditions, thrust keep its value with tilt angle variation below 40° and increase after that. But, sideforce increase constantly until 75°. The maximum axial velocity in the wake on hover and cruise conditions was around 60m/s and tangential velocity was around 12m/s. The position of the maximum axial velocity and vortex center move off the fan rotation center line as the tilt angle increases.

The evolutionary structure of tip vortices has been investigated with a two-dimensional LDV system for a plain and a slotted blade, respectively. To analyze the effect of slots which bypasses a part of main stream into the tip face, velocity profiles, vortex sizes, their displacements and turbulence intensities during one revolution of the rotor were measured by the phase averaging process. For the comparison of circumferential velocity components of the plain blade and the slotted blade, the peak values of the slotted blade were lower than those of the plain blade, and axial velocity components of the slotted blade were considerably larger than those of the plain blade. The slotted rotor blade enlarged the core size and made the vortex delayed compared with those of the plain blade at the same wake ages. Turbulence profiles had peaks inside the core radii and decayed gradually in the radial direction of vortex coordinate. Also, using a quasi 3-D LDV measurement technique the budget of turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed in radial direction of the vortex core.

By using an actuator disk method based flow solver, aerodynamic analysis is carried out for a dual ducted fan aircraft, which is one of the VTOL compound aircrafts, and its associated ground effect is analyzed. The characteristics and accuracy of the solver for ground effect analysis is evaluated through a comparison with the results obtained from the sliding mesh technique. The aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics with respect to the distance from the ground are analyzed. As the ground distance decreases, the fan thrust increases, but the deterioration of total normal force and hovering flight efficiency is identified owing to the decrease in the vertical force of the duct, fuselage, and wing. By examining the flow field in the bottom of the fuselage, the ground vortices and fountain flow generated by the interaction of the fan wake and ground are identified, and their influence on the aerodynamic performance is analyzed. The strength and characteristics of outwash with respect to the ground distance and azimuth direction are analyzed through comparison/examination of velocity profile. Influence of the ground effect with respect to collective pitch angle is also identified.
