Objective: It has been reported that Polygonati rhizoma (Pr) has anti-hyperglycemia, anti-triglycemia, anti-diabetic, and anti-tumor activity. Total extract of Pr was tested to identify anti-adipogenic activity in 3T3-L1 differentiation and molecular mechanism of Pr in 3T3-L1 differentiation. Methods: Differentiation of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte was induced in the presence of Pr extract and kaempferol. The level of lipid accumulation was measured by Oil Red O staining. The expression of genes associated with adipocyte differentiation was measured by RT-PCR. Results: Extract of Pr and its component kaempferol reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 during adipogenesis and also reduced mRNA levels of genes associated with adipogenesis, such as adipsin, aP2, LPL, SERBP-1c and $PPAR{\gamma}$. Conclusions: In this study, we showed that the molecular mechanism of Pr and kaempferol activity is related to regulation of $PPAR{\gamma}$ expression and activation.

This article indicates that the perceptions on the quality of agro-food are socially constructed. Farmers who were producing red pepper in Eumsung county had somewhat different perceptions on the quality of red pepper according to their own marketing channels. Farmers who were selling their red pepper to consumers by direct marketing tend to think the quality attributes more important as follows; information on producers, ingredients, taste and smell, amount of pesticides input, cleaning the harvested red pepper, quality certification by public authority, and brands. Consumers tend to think safety and production area more important, while farmers tend to think the quality attributes as follows; taste, color, variety, soil environment, and largeness. Based on these research findings, we can give some recommendations as follows; 1) the agricultural extension organization in the Eumsung county should change the strategy for local agriculture towards quality management of red peppers. and 2) the local government need to examine the feasibility of quality certifying on red pepper.

The purpose of this study is to segment the social awareness on the function of public benefit of agriculture and rural areas by socio-economic and action/attitude characteristics, and to identify the influential variables in social awareness. The nationwide survey of 1,200 adults aged over 20 was conducted, and the data was analyzed by PASW statistics 17.0. One of the awareness variables was the degree of the consent to the preservation of the public beneficial function. This variable was segmented by the interest on related information, the criteria of buying agricultural products, occupation and age. And the other awareness variable was the willingness to pay for the preservation of the public beneficial function. This variable was segmented by the education, occupation, income and the experience of living in rural areas. According to the results, some suggestions for improving the social awareness on the public beneficial function of agriculture and rural areas were discussed.

Housing environments of individuals and families can have considerable influence on their quality of life. This study examines the factors influencing housing satisfaction and compares them between rural and urban areas. A total of 3,958 households collected from a nationwide survey were analyzed using an ordered probit model. The results indicate that housing satisfaction was influenced by individual, housing, and neighborhood attributes. The factors that differentiated between rural and urban models were sex, housing type, and relationships with neighbors. The results have important policy issues for improving rural housing.

To improve the riding comfort of high speed trains, it needs active suspension system for railway more and more. In Japan, the high speed train, Shinkansen has adopted semi active suspension system and now it is running in the main trunk. In Korea, Koeran Train Express (KTX) is opened to commercial traffic and Korea High speed Railway (HSR350) is being developed. So the vibration control of the high speed train becomes important. In this paper, we introduce technical skill of Japanese semi active suspension Shinkansen to be helpful to the related researcher.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the value of the sociocultural multifunctionality of rural areas in Korea. The sociocultural multifunctionality of rural areas consists of emotional comfort, green landscape, cultural heritage, and rural viability values. The value of the sociocultural multifunctionality was assessed by contingent valuation method incoporating preference uncertainty. The log-logit models indicated that households were willing to pay 14,027~26,757 won per month and the model with preference uncertainty gave the highest WTP. WTP was affected by respondent's sex, location, awareness of relation with multifunctionality and others. The total value of sociocultural multifunctionality of rural areas in Korea estimated to 2,691~5,134 billion won per year.
