  • Instead of lead, we intend to develop shielding materials for morphological implementation by mixing barium sulfate, an eco-friendly substance, and PLA filament, a 3D printer material. The environmental substance, barium sulfate powder and PLA filament, a 3D printer material, were used, and the shielding was made with a 3D printer after being fused into an extruder to mix the powder powder of barium sulfate with PLA. To check the mixing ratio of barium sulfate powder and PLA filament, the mixing input was analyzed, and the absorption dose by thickness according to barium sulfate content was obtained to check the shielding function of the mixed shielding. In the evaluation of the mixture of sulfate barium powder particles and PLA filaments, it was mixed in the most appropriate proportion when the content was 30% in the apparent and electron microscopic observation photographs. In the absorption dose results by thickness according to barium sulfate content, the difference between the content of 0% and the content of each % was greatest at 0.5 cm in thickness and the lowest dose value at 3 cm in thickness when the barium content was 30%. In addition, as the barium content began to increase at 30%, the absorbed dose value increased again. Instead of conventional lead, barium sulfate, an eco-friendly substance, could be mixed with PLA, a filament material, to create morphological shielding. Based on this study, it is expected that the mixing ratio of barium to the mixture is the most appropriate 30%, and will be used as the basis for the implementation of morphological shielding using 3D printers in the diagnosis and treatment section.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimating the possibility of manufacturing radiation shielding sheet by searching for environmentally friendly materials suitable for medical environment of medical radiation shielding. There are many tungsten products which are currently used as shielding materials in place of lead, but there are small problems in the mass production of lightweight shielding sheets due to economical efficiency. To solve these problems, a lightweight, environmentally friendly material with economical efficiency is required. In this study, Barium sulphate and Iodine were proposed. Both materials are already used as contrast medias in radiography, and it is predicted that the shielding effect will be sufficient in a certain region as a shielding material because of the characteristic of absorbing radiation. Therefore, in this study, we used a Monte Carlo simulation to simulate radiation shielding materials. When it is a contrast agent such as Barium sulfate and Iodine, the radiation absorption effect in the high energy region appears greatly, and the effectiveness of the two shielding substance in the energy region of the star with thickness of 120 kVp is also evaluated in the medical radiation imaging region. Simulated estimation results it was possible to estimate the effectiveness of shielding for all two substances. Iodine has higher shielding effect than barium sulfate, 0.05 mm thick appears great effect. Therefore, the Monte Carlo simulation confirms that iodine, which is a radiological contrast agent, is also usable as barium sulfate in the production of radiation shielding sheets.

  • We developed an alternative radiation shielding material which is economical and has high protection efficiency. We validated the material in the form of sheet to make an apron. We increased the rate of barium and mixed tourmaline into silicon to improve the flexibility and protection rate of the sheet. The results showed that the shielding effect at low radiation energy is good enough with both 5 mm and 7 mm thickness. In the future, we will perform a quantitative evaluation of the reproducibility, volumetric efficiency, and porosity in mixing the ingredients.

  • This study made a tentative estimation of the shielding rate of barium compound by thickness through monte carlo simulation to apply medical radiation shielding products that can replace existing lead. Barium sulfate($BaSO_4$) was used for the shielding material, and thickness of the shielding material specimen was simulated from 0.1 mm to 5 mm by applying $15{\times}15cm^2$ of specimen area, $4.5g/cm^3$ of density of barium sulfate, and $11.34g/cm^3$ density of lead. Entered source was simulated with 10kVp Step in consecutive X-ray energy spectrum(40 kVp ~ 120 kVp). Absorption probability in 40 kVp ~ 60 kVp showed same shielding rate with lead in 3 mm ~ 5 mm of thickness, but it was identified that under 2 mm, the shielding rate was a bit lower than the existing lead shielding material. Also, the shielding rate in 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp energy band showed similar performance as the existing lead shielding material, but it was tentatively estimated as fairly low shielding rate below 0.5 mm. This study estimated the shielding rate of barium compound as the thickness function of x-ray energy band for medical radiation through monte carlo simulation, and made comparative analysis with existing lead. Also, this study intended to verify application validity of the x-ray shielding material for medical radiation of pure barium sulfate. As a result, it was estimated that the shielding effect was 95% higher than the existing lead 1.5 mm in at least 2 mm thickness of barium compound in medical radiation energy band 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp, and this result is considered valid to be provided as a base data in weight lightening production of radiation shielding product for medical radiation.

  • While the shielding substances of radiation shields in medical institutions are beginning to be replaced by environmentally friendly materials, radiation protection according to the shielding properties of environmentally friendly substances is becoming an important factor rather than the existing lead shielding properties. Tungsten and barium sulfate are representative shielding materials similar to lead, and are made in sheets or fiber form with eco-friendly materials. Ytterbium is an impermeable material used as a fluorine compound in the dental radiation field. This study aims to evaluate the shielding performance in the x-ray shielding area by comparing the shielding properties of ytterbium by energy band and that of existing eco-friendly materials. When three types of shielding sheets were fabricated and tested under the same process conditions, the shielding performance of the medical radiation area was about 5 % difference from tungsten. Furthermore, shielding performance was superior to barium sulfate. In the cross-sectional structure of the shielding sheet, there was a disadvantage that the arrangement of particles was not uniform. Ytterbium oxide showed sufficient potential as a medical radiation shielding material, and it is thought that it can improve the shielding performance by controlling the particle arrangement structure and particle size.

  • In Positron Emission Tomography Computed Tomography, Standardized Uptake Value(SUV)is most generally used to discern tumors. However, SUV may be influenced other factors. In this study, experiment was conducted distrotion in image and change in SUV according to substance with GEMINI TF PET/CT of Philips.. SUV for materials resulted in 1.8 for stainless, 1.4 for stent, 2.4 for iodine contrast medium, 2.6 for Barium Sulfate, 1.6 for Gypsum, and 1.4 for paraffin respectively. The distortion of image was remarkable for the iodine contrast medium and Barium Sulfate. For the barium sulfate, the higher the density, the larger the distrotion of the images. As a result of test, it appeared that the metallic substance whose atomic number is low and contrast medium whose concentration is low didn't affect the distortion in image and the change in SUV. However, it tis necessary to minimize distortion in image and change in SUV, by removing the metallic substance and checking if there are contrast mdeium or before examination.

  • In order to examine the material characteristics of a black and white photograph of the Borobudur temple, in Indonesia, several analyses were conducted. A sample was taken from a black and white photograph; microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses showed that the black and white photograph was composed of four layers including a paper substrate, baryta, binder and surface layers. It was confirmed that the substrate was paper made of cellulose fiber from Cannabis sativa, the baryta layer was made of barium sulfate(BaSO4) in powder form, the binder was an emulsion containing silver halide, and the surface protective layer was made of gelatin. Since photographs have different characteristics and require different preservation environments depending on the material of construction, it is necessary to study various black and white photographic material characteristics corresponding to each time period.

  • Poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) was bulk polymerized to make poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils to apply for polymeric embolization coils replacing metalic coils. Then, syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA) microfibrils having number-average degree of polymerization of 1100 and s-diad content of 60.4% were prepared via saponification of the PVPi with no separate spinning process. To make s-PVA microfibrils with radiopacity, zirconium dioxide ($ZrO_2$) and barium sulfate ($BaSO_4$) were added into s-PVA microfibrils during saponification. The computed tomography (CT) value indicating radiopacity reached up to over 1000 when the amount of $ZrO_2$ and $BaSO_4$ were 12 and 6 wt%, respectively.
