The vegetation of Seoimal-lighthouse area was investigated from August, 2001 to July, 2002. In order to analyze the vegetation of this area, synthesis table, actual vegetation map were prepared. The main community structures of this area represent evergreen broad-leaf community(about 48%), which are very good condition(nearly last sere) to preserve and 11communities(Camellia japonica community, Castanopsis cuspidnta var. thunbergii community, Neolitsea sericea community, Quercus serrata community, Quercus variabilis community, Carpinus corenna community, Srtrax japonica community, Pinus thunbergii community, Quercus acutissima community, Zelkova serrata community, Cinnamimum japonicum community) were classified by vegetation type. And Daphne kiusiana, Asirum maculatum, Cymbidium goeringii, Chloranthus glaber, Ligularia taguetii should be worthwhile species to conserve in this area.
The research was conducted to find optimal habitats of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees, and to investigate climate factors to determine their distribution using classification tree (CT) analysis. The warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees model (EG-model) constructed by CT analysis showed that Mean minimum temperature of the coldest month (TMC) is a major climate factor in determining distribution of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees. The areas above the $-5.95^{\circ}C$ of TMC revealed the optimal habitats of the trees. The coldest month mean temperature (CMT) equitable to $-5.95^{\circ}C$ of TMC is $-1.7^{\circ}C$, which is lower than $-1^{\circ}C$ of CMT of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees. Suitable habitats were defined for warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees in Korea. These habitats were classified into two areas according to the value of TMC. One area with more than$-5.95^{\circ}C$ of TMC was favorable to trees if the summer precipitation (PRS) is above 826.5mm; the other one with less than $-5.95^{\circ}C$ of TMC was favorable if PRS is above 1219mm. These favorable conditions of habitats were similar to those of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees in Japan. We figured out from these results that distribution of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees were expanded to inland areas of southern parts of Korean peninsula, and ares with the higher latitude. Finally, the northern limits of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees might be adjusted accordingly.
In this study, we investigated the statistical occupations and interannual variations of land cover types over Northeast Asian region using the 12 years (2001-2012) MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) land cover data sets. The spatial resolution and land cover types of MODIS land cover data sets are 500 m and 17, respectively. The 12-year average shows that more than 80% of the analysis region is covered by only 3 types of land cover, cropland (36.96%), grasslands (23.14%) and mixed forests (22.97%). Whereas, only minor portion is covered by cropland/natural vegetation mosaics (6.09%), deciduous broadleaf forests (4.26%), urban and built-up (2.46%) and savannas (1.54%). Although sampling period is small, the regression analysis showed that the occupations of evergreen needleleaf forests, deciduous broadleaf forests and mixed forests are increasing but the occupations of woody savannas and savannas are decreasing. In general, the pixels where the land cover types are classified differently with year are amount to more than 10%. And the interannual variations in the occupations of land cover types are most prominent in cropland (1.41%), mixed forests (0.82%) and grasslands (0.73%). In addition, the percentage of pixels classified as 1 type for 12 years is only 57% and the other pixels are classified as more than 2 types, even 9 types. The annual changes in the classification of land cover types are mainly occurred at the almost entire region, except for the eastern and northwestern parts of China, where the single type of land cover located. When we take into consider the time scale needed for the land cover changes, the results indicate that the MODIS land cover data sets over the Northeast Asian region should be used with caution.
This study was conducted to analyze the relationships between distributions of major hardwood species and characteristics of topography in natural hardwood forest at Mt. Joongwang, Pyongchang-gun, Gangwon-do which belongs to mid-northern part of the temperate forest. Acer pictum var. mono, Acer manshuricum and Quercus mongolica were affected by elevation, while Ulmus davidiana var. japonica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla were affected by the change of slope. Importance values of A. pictum, Betula costata, Ulmus laciniata and Cornus controversa in valley were 13.41%, 5.68% and 3.29%, respectively, which were higher than in any other topography. Species diversity of valley was the highest with 0.98. Ratio of A. pictum and Q. mongolica in dominant species were 24% and 14%, respectively in valley, while were 19% and 23% in slop. Q. mongolica ratio in ridgeline was higher than any other species. Importance values of A. pictum increased continuously until elevation 1,200 m. importance values of F. rhynchophylla was 6.6% which was the highest value found on elevation 800 m. Distributions of major hardwood species were different according to the elevation. The ratio of Q. mongolica and A. pictum were 6.4%~17.5% and 6.0%~10.7% respectively, which were the highest ratio. Species diversity increased according to the increase of the elevation.

This study analyzed the relationship between the geomorphic factor and changes in forest types of the Chungnam coastal area using ASTER DEM and multi-temporal satellite imagery. The results showed that in case coniferous forests vary by altitudinal segments, reduction rate continuously increased up to 500m, but dropped upon exceeding 550 meters. Next, the variation rate of mixed forests by altitudinal segments decreased from less than 50m. However, the variation rate of mixed forests increased from more than 50m to 700m, but dropped upon exceeding 700m. Lastly, the variation rate of deciduous forests according to altitudinal segments increased at all altitudes. A sharp increase was found in segments of more than 550 meters. With regard to the changes in the distribution area of forest types according to slope aspects, coniferous forests showed a reduction in all slope aspects. The reduction rate was especially higher in northern, northwestern, western and northeastern aspects. Mixed forests manifested a high growth rate in northwestern, northern and western aspects, but slightly decreased in eastern and southeastern aspects. In addition, deciduous forests increased in all slope aspects, but the growth rate was especially high in eastern, southeastern, northeastern and southern aspects.
The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of soil biota across forest types and soil depths in Gwangneung Experimental Forest. We selected 5 sites, which are 3 deciduous- and 2 coniferous forests. The abundance of microflora in these areas was analyzed by the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) indicators, and the density of mesofauna was measured by the abundance of nematodes and microarthropods. The abundance of soil microflora was higher in the A layer than in the B layer based on the PLFA indicators, but there were no differences between deciduous and coniferous forests. Average density of nematodes was higher in the A horizon than in the B horizon. The density of fungivorous nematodes was higher in the deciduous forests. Mean densities of Collembola and Oribatida were 44% and 42% of microarthropods in soil samples, respectively. The results of microbial PLFA indicators were significantly correlated with the density of their consumers, which reflected that the food web in fungi- and bacteria-based soil developed in this forests. This study suggested that the distribution of soil organisms largely separated by soil depths and was slightly affected by the forest type in the Gwangneung Experimental Forest.
Ecological measurement and biological environment of the Moak Provicial Park surveyed based on the habitat; deciduous broad leaved forest (Quercus mongolica variabilis-Pinus densiflora, Capinus tschonoskii, Quercus Mongolica, Quercus acutissima-Pinus densiflora, and Quercus variabilis), coniferous forest (Pinus densiflora), plantation forest (Pinus rigida), and the other place (pond, lake, rice field, stream, and river). Totally, 1 orders, 4 families, 8 species of amphibians were found at Mt. Moak provincial park. Biodiversity indices of studied region were as follow; richness was 1.270, diversity was 1.775, and evenness was 0.853 in amphibians. 42.1% of amphibians were found in deciduous broad leaved forest, 11.3% in coniferous forest, 1.6% in plantation forest, and 45.0% in the other region.
The author studied the soil microarthropoda's fauna, vertical distribution, seasonal fluctuation, and the relationship between the number of soil microarthropoda and environmental factor(pH) in survey area. 3949 soil microarthropoda were collected in survey area. They included Arachnida(48.6%), Collembola(23.5%), Hymenoptera(l9.9%), and Isoptera, etc. Fresh length was the longest(1l3.6 mm) in broad-leaf forest on Mt. Chilgap which is non-industrial complex area, and the shortest(46.8 mm) in pine forest at Yochon industrial complex. The population density of soil microarthropoda was the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. The number of soil microarthropoda was higher in Mt. Keryong and Chilgap, non-industrial complex area, than Yochon and Daesan, industrial complex area. The number of soil microarthropoda increased from spring to summer and decreased from autumn to winter. Vertically, soil microarthropoda were more abundant in the second layer subsoil(0∼5 cm) in spring, in the first layer(5∼10 cm) in summer and autumn, and in the third layer(0∼15 cm) in winter. Diversity index was higher in non-industrial area(1.02) than industrial complex area(0.73). Biodiversity index was the highest in the second soil layer, in pine forest on Mt. Keryong(l.60) and the lowest in the third soil layer, in broad leaf-forest, at Daesan industrial complex(0.24).
The present study aims to identify the effect of land cover categories on particulate matter (PM) concentrations by analyzing the correlation between monthly PM concentrations in Seoul's air quality monitoring network and the percentages of land cover categories by buffers around air quality monitoring stations. According to a monthly correlation analysis between land cover categories and PM concentrations, in the buffer 3km, PM10 showed a better correlation than PM2.5, there was a clear negative correlation with the forest area, the grassland and the urbanized area had some positive correlation with PM10, and the barren land and the urbanized area had some positive correlation with PM2.5. According to a monthly correlation analysis of dominant land cover sub-categories and sub-sub-categories within the buffer 3km, PM10 showed a clear negative correlation with the broad-leaved forest, and some positive correlation with the road was dominant. PM2.5 showed partly negative correlation with the broad-leaved forest and partly positive correlation with the commercial area. There was a very low or no correlation with other grassland and bare land subcategories. A monthly stepwise regression analysis on noticeable land cover sub-categories and sub-sub-categories with positive or negative correlations revealed that an increasing percentage of the broad-leaved forest had a clear effect on reducing PM10 concentrations, and the road was excluded from the selected variables. Although an increasing percentage of the commercial area had some effect on increasing monthly PM2.5 concentrations and an increasing percentage of the broad-leaved forest had an effect on decreasing the PM2.5 concentrations, their effect size was smaller than that on PM10. The forest area around the city center had the largest and clearest effect on reducing PM concentrations. The urbanized area's sub-categories and sub-sub-categories were also confirmed to have some effect on increasing PM concentrations.
Taking account of the structural variation on species composition according to the different topographic positions and aspects, the forest community attributes such as species composition, species diversity index, and similarity coefficient were comparatively analyzed for the three topographic positions and the four aspects in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Gari area. The results are as follows 1. The most dominant species in the overstory were Quercus mongolica in the mid-slope, the ridge, and all aspects areas, however, the stands of the topographic positions were less similar than the stands of the aspects in species composition, because of the appearance of the specific domonant species such as Juglans mandshurica in the valley area and Pinus densiflora in the ridge area. 2. Among the three topographic positions, the mid-slope area had greatest species diversity index in overstory, but the index of the valley had greater value than those of mid-slope and ridge in mid-story and understory. The north-east area among the aspects had greatest the index in all canopy layers. However, The stands of the aspects showed more smaller variation than the stands of the topographic positions. 3. The ridge area showed greatest similarity coefficient value with the mid-slope area, but showed least similarity coefficient value with the valley. However, similarity coefficient among the topographic positions had much smaller value than similarity coefficient among the aspects.
