Basic Mixing and Mechanical Tests on High Ductile Fiber Reinforced Cementless Composites (고인성 섬유보강 무시멘트 복합체의 기초 배합 및 역학 실험)

  • Cement has been traditionally used as a main binding material of high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using alkali-activated slag and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers for manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced cementless composites. Two mixture proportions with proper flowability and mortar viscosity for easy fiber mixing and uniform fiber dispersion were selected based on alkali activators. Then, the slump flow, compression, uniaxial tension and bending tests were performed on the mixes to evaluate the basic properties of the composites. The cementless composites showed an average slump flow of 465 mm and tensile strain capacity of approximately 2% of due to formation of multiple micro-cracks. Test results demonstrated a feasibility of manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced composites without using cement.

Modified-stoichiometric Model for Describing Hydration of Alkali-Activated Slag (알칼리 활성 슬래그의 수화에 대한 개선된 화학양론적 모델)

  • The present study proposes the modified-stoichiometric model for describing hydration of sodium silicate-based alkaliactivated slag(AAS), and compares the results with the thermodynamic modelling-based calculations. The proposed model is based on Chen and Brouwers(2007a) model with updated database as reported in recent studies. In addition, the calculated results for AAS are compared to those for hydrated portland cement. The maximum difference between the proposed model and the thermodynamic calculation for AAS was at most 20%, and the effects of water-to-binder ratio and activator dosages were identically described by both approaches. In particular, the amount of non-evaporable water was within 10% difference, and was in excellent agreement with the experimental results. Nevertheless, notable deviation was observed for the chemical shrinkage, which is largely dependent on the volume of hydrates and pores.

  • 최근 온실가스 감축과 기후변화 그리고 녹색성장에 대한 관심증대와 더불어 시멘트 분야의 연구 생산분야는 천연자원 사용량을 줄이고, 소성공정을 도입하지 않은 새로운 개념의 무기바인더가 다시 고개를 들고 있다. 다른 용어로는 비소성, 무시멘트 등으로 표현되기도 하는데, 광의의 개념으로 보면 알칼리 활성화제를 사용한 비소성 무기결합재인 지오폴리머가 바로 그것이다. 지오폴리머 결합재는 1957년 우크라이나의 토목공학회에서 개발한 알칼리 활성 슬래그시멘트에 기원을 두고 있고, 1970년대 말 프랑스의 다비도비치에 의해 지오폴리머라는 용어가 처음 사용되기 시작했다. 알칼리 활성 무기결합재(Alkali-activated inorganic binder)의 정의이다. Alkali-activated inorganic binder는 원래는 결합능력이 없던 재료에 대해서 Alkali-activating 용액을 첨가했을 때, 시멘트처럼 결합능력을 가지게 되는 모든 종류의 결합시스템을 말한다. 국내에도 이미 2000년 초부터 지오폴리머의 개념을 도입한 제품이 상업화되어 오랫동안 품질검증을 거쳐 안정성이 확인되고 있다. 최근에 다시 전남대가 그 동안의 연구성과를 발 빠르게 중소기업에 기술 이전하여 소위 무시멘트 시대에 진입하는 분위기이다. 지난 9월 동아에스텍(주)과 조인트벤처 설립을 위해 손을 잡았고, 사업화가 곧 진행될 것으로 보인다. 이를 계기로 국내에도 무시멘트회사가 본격적으로 등장하게 된 것이다. 따라서 본 고는 무시멘트의 개념을 잘 표현한 문헌으로 일본콘크리트공학 연차논문집, 2010년 1월호를 번역 요약 발췌한 것이다.

Mechanical Properties of Granulated Ground Blast Furnace Slag on Blended Activator of Sulfate and Alkali (황산염 및 알칼리계의 혼합 활성화제에 대한 고로슬래그미분말의 역학적 특성)

  • This study shows the mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) synthesized using sulfate with NaOH solution. The used sulfates were calcium sulfate ($CaSO_4$, denoted CS) and sodium sulfate ($Na_2SO_4$, denoted SS). The replacement ratio of sulfates was 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% by weight of slag. NaOH solution of 2M and 4M concentration was used. A sample was activated with sulfate and activated with blended activator (blending NaOH solution with sulfate) respectively. 24 mix ratios were used and the water-binder weight ratio for the test was set 0.5. This research carried out the compressive strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), absorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the case of samples with CS, sample with 7.5% CS, sample with 2M NaOH+5.0% CS and sample with 4M NaOH+5.0% CS showed the good performance in the strength development. In the case of samples with SS, sample with 10.0% SS, sample with 2M NaOH+7.5% SS and sample with 4M NaOH+2.5% SS obtained good performance in strength. The results of UPV and water absorption showed a similar tendency to the strength properties. The XRD analysis of samples indicated that the hydration products formed in samples were ettringite, CSH and silicate phases. In this study, it is indicated that when compared to the use of sulfate only, the use of both sulfate and NaOH solution makes mechanical properties of AASC better.

Microstructure and Strength Properties of Alkali-activated Binder mixed with Sea Water (해수를 사용한 알칼리 활성화 결합재의 미세구조 및 강도 특성)

  • This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical and microstructural properties on hardened samples that were synthesized using blended binder(fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag cement(BFSC)), alkali activator and sea water or distilled water. Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and BFSC in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate were used 5 wt% of binder, respectively, as an alkaline activator. The compressive strength and absorption were measured at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days, and the XRD, TGA and MIP tests were performed at the age of 28 days. An increase in the content of BFSC leads to an increase in the quantities of ettringite and C-S-H formed, regardless of the type of mixing water. And it also shows higher strength due to the reduction of pores larger than ~50 nm. All hardened samples in this study have common hydration products of C-S-H, $Ca(OH)_2$ and calcite. Hydrocalumite of all reaction products formed was only present in hardened sample mixed with sea water. For each FA/BFSC mixing ratio, the compressive strength of hardened sample mixed with sea water was similar to that mixed with distilled water. It is proposed that the slight increase of strength of samples mixed with sea water is mainly due to the presence of hydrocalumite phase containing chlorine ion, contributing to the change of total porosity and pore size distribution in samples.

Characteristics of Compressive Strength and Drying-shrinkage Equation of Alkali-activated Mortar (알칼리 활성화 결합재 모르타르의 압축강도 특성 및 건조수축 추정식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand a compressive strength and propose a dry shrinkage strain equation being able to predict dry shrinkage of alkali-activated materials(AAM) mortar samples manufactured using fly-ash(FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS). The main parameters investigated were the GGBFS replace ratios(30, 50, 70 and 100%) and sodium silicate modules(Ms[$SiO_2/Na_2O$] 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). The compressive strength of AAM increased with increases GGBFS replace ratios or Ms contents. The dry shrinkage strain of AAM decreased with increases Ms contents. But, the dry shrinkage strain of AAM increased as the GGBFS replace ratio increases. Therefore, the GGBFS replace ratio seems to have very significant and important consequences for the mix design of the AAM mortar. The results indicated the R-square of single regression analysis based on each mix properties was the highest value; 0.7539~0.9786(average 0.9359). And the presumption equation of dry shrinkage strain with all variables(GGBFS, Ms and material age) has higher accuracy and its R-square was 0.8020 at initial curing temperature 23 degrees Celsius and 0.8018 at initial curuing temperature 70 degrees Celsius.

Properties of Non-Sintered Cement Pastes Immersed in Sea Waters at Different Temperatures for Binders Mixed with Different Ratios (침지된 해수 온도 및 결합재 혼합비에 따른 비소성 시멘트의 강도 특성)

  • This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical properties on non-sintered cement pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures. The non-sintered cement pastes were synthesized using blended binder(Class F fly ash; FA and ground granulated blast furnace slag; GGBFS) and alkali activator(sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate). Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and GGBFS in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. The alkali activators were used 5wt% of blended binder, respectively. Calcium carbonate was used as an chemical additive. The compressive strength, bulk density and absorption of alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes were measured at 3 and 28 days after immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures($5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$). The XRD and SEM tests of the pastes were conducted at 28 days. Water-soluble chloride(free chloride) and acid-soluble chloride(total chloride) contents in the pastes were also measured after 28 days immersion in sea water. The experimental results showed that increasing the content of FA in alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea water increases the absorption, water-soluble chloride content and acid-soluble chloride content, and reduces the compressive strength and bulk density. And it was found that there was a variation of strength change for the alkali-activated FA-GGBFS blends pastes immersed in sea waters at three different temperatures that depends on the blending ratio of FA and GGBFS.

  • Globally, there are environmental problems due to greenhouse gas emissions. $CO_2$ emissions rate of the cement industry is very high, but the continued demand of cement is needed in the future. In this study, in order to reduce the environmental impact of $CO_2$ emissions from cement production. The experiments were carried out for the development of non-sintered cement (have not undergone firing burning) by granulated ground blast furnace slag. In order to compare the characteristics by curing, an experiment was conducted by changing the curing conditions such as atmospheric steam curing, observe the mechanical properties for the measurement of flexural compressive strength by mortar, observe the chemical properties such as acid resistance, $Cl^-$ penetrate resistance and analyzed the mechanism of hydration by XRD, SEM experiments. From the experimental results, as compared with portland cement usually confirm the mechanical and chemical properties excellent, it is expected be possible to apply to the undersea, underwater and underground structures that require superior durability. In addition, based on the excellent compressive strength by steam curing, it is expected to be possible to utilize as a cement replacement material in the secondary product of concrete. In the future, to solve the problem through continued research, it will be expected to reduce the effect of environmental load and to be excellent economics.

Strength Development of Blended Sodium Alkali-Activated Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) Mortar (혼합된 나트륨계열 활성화제에 의한 고로슬래그 기반 모르타르의 강도발현 특성)

  • Strength model for blasted furnace slag mortar blended with sodium was investigated in this study. The main parameters of AAS (alkali activated slag) mortar were dosage of alkali activator, water to binder ratio (W/B), and aggregate to binder ratio (A/B). For evaluating the property related to the dosage of alkali activator, sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) of 4~8% was added to 4% dosage of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). W/B and A/B was varied 0.45~0.60 and 2.05~2.85, respectively. An alkali quality coefficient combining the amounts of main compositions of source materials and sodium oxide ($Na_2O$) in sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is proposed to assess the compressive strength of alkali activated mortars. Test results clearly showed that the compressive strength development of alkali-activated mortars were significantly dependent on the proposed alkali quality coefficient. Compressive strength development of AAS mortars were also estimated using the formula specified in the previous study, which was calibrated using the collected database. Predictions from the simplified equations showed good agreements with the test results.

유해물질 용출방지제의 조성과 용출특성에 미치는 영향

  • CaO는 물과 반응하여 발열반응을 일으켜서 CaO에 코팅된 계면활성제를 용해시키며 그리고 규산소다에 흡착된 중금속과 유기물을 고정화 시키는 역할을 담당한다. 그리고 규산소다는 물과 가수분해하여 다공성이 되면서 중금속과 유기물 등을 흡착시키는 역할을 담당한다. 또 CaO에 코팅된 계면화성제는 기름과 반응성이 우수하므로 $80^{\circ}C$$90^{\circ}C$에서 용해하여 기름과 반응하는 특성을 갖고 있다. 미분 슬래그는 보간 중에 암석화되는 과정을 도와 주므로 시간이 경과하면 pH가 점점 중성으로 변화하는 현상을 보여 주었다.
