  • The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of floor exercise on senior fitness test, blood lipids and arterial stiffness in elderly women with metabolic syndrome. Forty one elderly women with metabolic syndrome were randomly assigned to a exercsie group(n=23) or control goup(n=18). The exercise group performed floor exercise for 12 weeks, 3times per week. Exercise intensity was increased gradually from 30%-60% of heart rate reserve. Senior fitness, blood lipids profile and arterial stiffness were measured pre and post the 12 weeks intervention. Senior fitness(lower body strength, upper body strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity and body composition(%fat, LBM, WC)), Blood lipids(TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C) and Arterial stiffness(PWV) were significantly improved in the exercise group after floor exercise, however no changes were confirmed in the control group. These findings indicates that 12 weeks of floor exercise improves senior fitness, blood lipids and arterial stiffness in elderly women with metabolic syndrome. Thus, this study provides evidence that floor exercise is important methods to improve metabolic syndrome health. And it can reduce metabolic syndrome symptoms risk in elderly women with metabolic syndrome.

  • The subjects consisted of 60 healthy men who absence of cardiopulmonary diseases, orthopedic diseases, and metabolic diseases. The difference of physical fitness, body composition, cardiovascular risk factors, and psychological characteristics for security guards' working type were examined using one-way ANOVA through SPSS 12.0 version and was treated for the post hoc test when the difference appeared significantly. According to the result, first, there were higher level for the physical fitness according to the security guards' position and it increases body composition and cardiovascular risk factors from higher position. Second, physical fitness level is higher, body composition and cardiovascular risk factors is lower in the security guards for the field service than the security guards on inside duty according to the security guards' working type. Third, it decreases body composition and cardiovascular risk level when the physical fitness level is getting increase for the security guards. In conclusion, it needs to have a physical activity with aerobic system for the security guards of leading members and inside service to decrease the overweight or obesity and cardiovascular risk level.

  • This study was aimed to examine the effects of intermittent walking on health related fitness and metabolic syndrome risk factors in elderly women. Forty five elderly women were randomly assigned to three groups: three 10-min walks per day, one 30-min walk per day or no exercise, respectively. Both walking groups exercised three days a week at moderate intensity for 12 weeks. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to test the hypothesis with a significant level of α = .05. The results indicated that body composition(body weight, body mass index, percent body fat), muscle endurance, flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness significantly increased after 12 weeks for both walking groups. However, it was found that muscle strength significantly increased only in a continuous walking group. Metabolic syndrome risk factors comprised of waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, and fasting glucose were significantly improved in both walking groups. In addition, there was a difference in these metabolic syndrome risk factors between pre and post exercise. The results of this study support the hypothesis that intermittent walking has a significant impact on health related physical fitness and metabolic syndrome rick factors in elderly women as continuous walking does.

  • The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, comparisons on the psychological and physical attributes of normal weight, overweight, and obese children were conducted. Second, the influence of BMI and physical fitness interaction on psychological adaptation in children with obesity was explored. Participants were 245 children between the ages of 9 and 13 years (64.5% males). Data on children considered overweight (n = 45) or obese (n = 78) were gathered from the Korean Obese Children's Physical Activity (KOCPA) projects. Normal weight children (n = 122) were recruited from two Seoul elementary schools. Psychological measurements included Weight Efficacy Life-style Questionnaire (WEL), Physical Self-efficacy Scale (PSES), Child Dietary Self-efficacy Scale (CDSS), Self-concept Inventory (SCI), and the Korean version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Intervention TM Version 4.0 Generic Core Scales (PedsQLTM4.0). BMI (kg/m2) and physical fitness (e.g., aerobic endurance, flexibility) were recorded by experts in exercise physiology. Results showed that children in the high BMI group reported poorer psychological adaption and demonstrated lower physical fitness when compared to the remaining groups. Compared to normal weight children, children considered overweight and obese were found to have lower physical self-efficacy, more negative self-concept, and poorer quality of life. Further, these children also had significantly lower physical fitness levels than their normal weight counterparts. Physical fitness was found to have a significant main effect on weight efficacy (WEL), physical self-efficacy (PSES), and quality of life (PedsQL) in children considered overweight or obese. A significant BMI-physical fitness interaction effect was found for self-concept (SCI) only. Children with higher BMI reported poorer self-concept regardless of fitness level whereas children with lower BMI and higher fitness reported more positive self-concept. Implications and limitations are discussed.

  • The study conducted a meta analysis to identify the effects of physical activity programs for the elderly with disabilities. The 14 out of 177 studies, fulfilled the process and requirement, were selected for the Hedges'g, funnel plot, forest plot, Egger's regression test, trim-and-fill, fail-safe N. There were three conclusions based on the results. First, the physical activity was effective for the elderly with disabilities and showed good effects on the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Second, the physical activity programs of fundamental exercise skill, game and sport, and fitness exercise showed positive effects on the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains in the elderly with disabilities. Third, the fundamental exercise skill for the psychomotor domain, the game and sport for the cognitive domain, and the fitness exercise for the affective domain were the most effective for the elderly with disabilities.

The subjects in experimental group(n=12) participated in nordic walking program for 12 weeks while those in control group(n=9) was controled not to participate in physical activities. After the training, weight, muscle mass and fat mass% showed significant improvement in experimental group. In physical fitness, strength, balance and coordination in experimental group showed significant improvement. In conclusion, these results suggest that nordic walking can be recommended as an effective intervention program to change body composition and to improve physical fitness in obese women with ID.
