This paper examines the economic factors that are related to the dynamics of the variance risk premium, and specially, which economic factors are related to the forecasting power of the variance premium regarding future index returns. Eleven general economic variables, eight interest rate variables, and eleven sentiment-associated variables are used to figure out the relevant economic variables that affect the variance risk premium. According to our empirical results, the won-dollar exchange rates, foreign reserves, the historical/implied volatility, and interest rate variables all have significant coefficients. The highest adjusted R-squared is more than 65 percent, indicating their significant explanatory power of the variance risk premium. Next, to verify the economic variables associated with the predictability of the variance risk premium, we conduct forecasting regressions to predict future stock returns and volatilities for one to six months. Our empirical analysis shows that only the won-dollar exchange rate, among the many variables associated with the dynamics of the variance risk premium, has a significant forecasting ability regarding future index returns. These results are consistent with results found in previous studies, including Londono (2012) and Bollerslev et al. (2014), which show that the variance risk premium is related to global risk factors.
ARIMA and ARIMA+IGARCH models are fitted and compared for daily Korean won/US dollar exchange rate data over 17 years. A linear structural change model and an autoregressive structural change model are fitted for multiple change-point estimation since there seems to be structural change with this data.
This paper investigates the existence of uncovered interest rate parity between the Korea-USA as well as the Korea-Japan. We may ascertain the existence of uncovered interest rate parity by examining the empirical relationship between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials in the Korea-USA as well as in the Korea-Japan. The empirical relationship between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials in the Korean-USA and Korean-Japanese economies is investigated using cointegration tests. In the context of this study, cointegration technique is appropriate to examine the relationship between two(or more) nonstationary time series. Also, this method is useful to detect the possibility that the nonstationarity in both series can be explained by a single factor. The empirical results support the nonexistence of a long run equilibrium relation between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials. Also, the results show that the nonstationarity cannot be explained by a single factor.
By using deterministic dynamic models, we observe the behavior of the foreign exchange rate of a small open economy with rational expectation formation and different restrictions on the international economic integrations. First, an economy connected to the world by purchasing power parity and uncovered interest parity is studied in the next section. In both sections, financial assets available in the economy are domestic money and bonds. Stocks are added as a financial instrument in the next section, and real capital accumulation is also taken into account. Furthermore, the economy concerned there is fairly autonomous, and not directly governed by either purchasing power parity or uncovered interest parity. The expectation formation used throughout the whole paper is complete perfect foresight, which is the certainty version of rational expectation and free from any forecast errors. It is found that upon monetary expansion the short run depreciation of the foreign exchange rate is a fairly robust result regardless of the degree of the international economic integration, while it is not true for fiscal expansion. The expectation on the long run state significantly affects the short run response of the exchange rate. All of our models postulate that the current account should be balanced eventually. As the result, the short run behavior of the exchange rate is affected by the expectation on the long run balance and may well be a blend of the traditional flow view and modem asset view. The initial overshooting of the exchange rate is easily observed even in the fairly autonomous economy Furthermore, the initial overshooting is not reduced over time, but augmented for some time before it is eventually eliminated. As long as we maintain rational expectaion, introducing time delay in the adjustment of the foreign goods price to the foreign exchange rate does not make much difference.
In this paper, we use a nested family of models of Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity(GARCH) to verify asymmetric conditional heteroscedasticity in the KOSPI and Won-Dollar exchange rate. This study starts from an investigation of whether time series data have asymmetric features not explained by standard GARCH models. First, we use kernel density plot to show the non-normality and asymmetry in data as well as to capture asymmetric conditional heteroscedasticity. Later, we use three representative asymmetric heteroscedastic models, EGARCH(Exponential Garch), GJR-GARCH(Glosten, Jagannathan and Runkle), APARCH(Asymmetric Power Arch) that are improved from standard GARCH models to give a better explanation of asymmetry. Thereby we highlight the fact that volatility tends to respond asymmetrically according to positive and/or negative values of past changes referred to as the leverage effect. Furthermore, it is verified that how the direction of asymmetry is different depending on characteristics of time series data. For the KOSPI and Korean won-US dollar exchange rate, asymmetric heteroscedastic model analysis successfully reveal the leverage effect. We obtained predictive values of conditional volatility and its prediction standard errors by using moving block bootstrap.
In international trade, transportation generally has the largest and direct impact on freight costs. However, it is also sensitive to external factors such as global economic conditions, global trade volume and exchange rate. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the relationship and influence of international trade in terms of external factors that affect the change of imports and exports by marine and air transportation through empirical analysis. In particular, the analysis of the impact of these external factors on marine and air transportation is an important topic when recent exchange rate changes are significant, and it is also necessary to analyze what transportation means are more sensitive to exchange rate changes. In this study, we use the Vector Error Correction Model to analyze the dynamic effects of changes in exchange rate and domestic and international economic conditions on marine and air transportation from January 2000 to March 2017. Respectively. Alos, Impulse response function and variance decomposition were examined.
This paper empirically investigates a long-run and short-run equilibrium relationships for exchange rate and stock prices in Korea and Japan from January 1998 to July 2008. Because using monthly data in my study, analyzes unit root test and VEC model including seasonality to overcome bias that happen in seasonal adjustment. The empirical evidence suggests that exists strong evidence supporting the long-run cointegration relationships between exchange rates and stock prices of the Korea and Japan. This implies that it is possible to predict one market from another for both countries, which seems to violate the efficient market hypothesis. In the long-run a negative relationship running from the KRW/JPY real exchange rate to the stock prices of Korea strongly argues for the traditional approach.
The volatility in the financial data is usually measured by conditional variance. Two main streams for gauging conditional variance are stochastic volatility (SV) model and autoregressive type approach (GARCH). This article is conducting comparative study between SV and GARCH through the Korean Stock Prices Index (KOSPI) data. It is seen that SV model is slightly better than GARCH(1,1) in analyzing KOSPI data.
The Korean economy has achieved continuous economic growth for the past several decades thanks to the government's export strategy policy. This increase in exports is playing a leading role in driving Korea's economic growth by improving economic efficiency, creating jobs, and promoting technology development. Traditionally, the main factors affecting Korea's exports can be found from two perspectives: economic factors and industrial structural factors. First, economic factors are related to exchange rates and global economic fluctuations. The impact of the exchange rate on Korea's exports depends on the exchange rate level and exchange rate volatility. Global economic fluctuations affect global import demand, which is an absolute factor influencing Korea's exports. Second, industrial structural factors are unique characteristics that occur depending on industries or products, such as slow international division of labor, increased domestic substitution of certain imported goods by China, and changes in overseas production patterns of major export industries. Looking at the most recent studies related to global exchanges, several literatures show the importance of cultural aspects as well as economic and industrial structural factors. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a forecasting model by considering cultural factors along with economic and industrial structural factors in calculating the import volume of each country from Korea. In particular, this study approaches the influence of cultural factors on imports of Korean products from the perspective of PUSH-PULL framework. The PUSH dimension is a perspective that Korea develops and actively promotes its own brand and can be defined as the degree of interest in each country for Korean brands represented by K-POP, K-FOOD, and K-CULTURE. In addition, the PULL dimension is a perspective centered on the cultural and psychological characteristics of the people of each country. This can be defined as how much they are inclined to accept Korean Flow as each country's cultural code represented by the country's governance system, masculinity, risk avoidance, and short-term/long-term orientation. The unique feature of this study is that the proposed final prediction model can be selected based on Design Principles. The design principles we presented are as follows. 1) A model was developed to reflect interest in Korea and cultural characteristics through newly added data sources. 2) It was designed in a practical and convenient way so that the forecast value can be immediately recalled by inputting changes in economic factors, item code and country code. 3) In order to derive theoretically meaningful results, an algorithm was selected that can interpret the relationship between the input and the target variable. This study can suggest meaningful implications from the technical, economic and policy aspects, and is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the export support strategies of small and medium-sized enterprises by using the import forecasting model.
Realized volatility is well known to have long memory, strong association with other global financial markets and interdependences among macroeconomic indices such as exchange rate, oil price and interest rates. This paper proposes autoencoder factor-augmented heterogeneous autoregressive (AE-FAHAR) model for realized volatility forecasting. AE-FAHAR incorporates long memory using HAR structure, and exogenous variables into few factors summarized by autoencoder. Autoencoder requires intensive calculation due to its nonlinear structure, however, it is more suitable to summarize complex, possibly nonstationary high-dimensional time series. Our AE-FAHAR model is shown to have smaller out-of-sample forecasting error in empirical analysis. We also discuss pre-training, ensemble in autoencoder to reduce computational cost and estimation errors.
