  • Recently, there has been a debate as to whether bioethanol should replace some portion of gasoline for fuels in South Korea, as energy security as well as climate change issues are rising as a significant national agenda. However, a considerable amount of subsidy will be required to compensate for the higher price of bioethanol-blended gasoline. In this context, government subsidy will obtain justification only when the positive social gains from consuming bioethanol for fuels can exceed the negative social costs. Through a nation-wide choice experimental survey, we examine if South Koreans have a positive value as well as non-linear preferences on substituting bioethanol for gasoline. The results reveal that the willingness to pay for purely domestic bioethanol-blended gasoline within 10% is about 52 KRW; Koreans have concave preferences on the blending ratio of bioethanol to gasoline. The turning point of the blending ratio of bioethanol was 6.5%. Also, we found inverse U-shaped curve between income and bioethanol choice probability and the turning point of the income was calculated as 250~299million KRW. Politically conservative propensity advocates uses of bioethanol blended gasoline, but awareness on bioethanol or more weights on environmental conservation have significantly negative effects on the choice of bioethanol. However, the design of the survey questionnaire is incompatible with the RFS of Korea and assumes orthogonality among the following four interrelated attributes: (i) domestic or offshore procurement of feedstocks in the case of domestic production, (ii) domestic production or import of bioethanol, (iii) the blending ratios, and (iv) the retail price increases. In addition, the results of model estimation and of model selection test are not definite. Hence, the results in this study should not be directly applied to the design of the specifics of the Korean RFS. Hence, the results in this study require cautions in applying to the design of the Korean RFS policy.

  • This study examines the modern succession, transformation and significance of enjoyment methods of classical literature (art) with a focus on the characteristics of those methods that appeared when the performances of the traditional era began to be displayed on the stage of the theaters in modern Seoul. The clues to the reasons for this type of enjoyment can be found in newspapers, magazine articles, and advertisements from the early 20th century. The emergence of stage theaters at the beginning of the modern era caused a sweeping change in the performance environment, including the fact that it was possible for all kinds of people to enjoy art beyond the existing socioeconomic hierarchies or barriers of status, that the performers were given employment through the theater, and that the audience had the tendency of the general public of an unspecified number because the audience was able to see the performances only by paying the viewing fee. The way of enjoying traditional performances also changed based on these new adaptations: the performances were sequential, show-oriented, and re-contextualized as public performances. It is significant that in the traditional era, performers and audiences had been segregated according to their status and a strict hierarchy; now, such cultural norms were breaking down in favor of a kind of equality. In addition, it was possible for the audience to experience sensory enjoyment, and theater brought about a new kind of popular consumer enjoyment of an artistic product. Of course, though, it is possible to look back and find problems related to the contemporary context, but the traditional performances, which were the main performances for the lower class, took the first place on the modern theater stage, and as a result, no one can deny that it became possible to move forward in the first phase of an era of public performance.

  • Recent advances in the internet infrastructure have resulted in a large number of huge Web sites and portals worldwide. These Web sites are being visited by various types of users in many different ways. Among all the web page access sequences from different users, some of them occur so frequently that may need an attention from those who are interested. We call them frequent access patterns and access sequences that can be frequent the candidate patterns. Since these candidate patterns play an important role in the incremental Web mining, it is important to efficiently generate, add, delete, and search for them. This thesis presents a novel tree structure that can efficiently store the candidate patterns and a related set of algorithms for generating the tree structure, adding new patterns, deleting unnecessary patterns, and searching for the needed ones. The proposed tree structure has a kind of the 3 dimensional link structure and its nodes are layered.

This paper investigates the effect of female faculties on female college students' employment in Korea. The fixed effect estimation results show that the percentage of female faculty has no statistically significant effect on female students' employment rate, although the 1%p increase of female faculty appears to be related with the employment rate of female students by 0.102%p in estimation using pooled OLS estimation. We have the almost same results even with dividing female students by major fields. These results can be interpreted the students' employment rate may be influenced by many other factors, such as personal characteristics, abilities, and family background besides faculty gender. We find that there is no empirical evidence of statistically significant effect of the faculty gender on the employment rate of female students.
