Characteristics of Suspended Fine-Grained Particles in Settling Columns (침강수주에서 부유된 광물성 미립자의 특성)

  • Suspended fine mineral particles are deposited at the areas with low flow velocity and low transportation capacity in rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It can be contaminated by heavy metals. Examples of problem fields art dredging of sediment, water pollutants, and maintenance of navigation channels and construction works. To deal with the settling problems it is necessary to understand tile physico-chemical characteristics of cohesive sediment under varying density of particle and ion addition(NaOH, HCl, NaCl), which is dissolved in river, because fine-grained cohesive sediment can lead to flocculation with the physico-chemical influences and takes different characteristics. Experiments with fresh and saline water are followed with fine-grained sediments(alumina and quartz) in settling columns. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor(maximum 10 mbar). Until the initial concentration of 20,000 mg/1 of alumina and quartz the settling velocity was on the increase. Above this initial concentration was it on the decrease. In an acid condition, which causes strong flocculation, average settling velocity of quartz powder was high. In an alkaline water low average settling velocity of it was observed. However, alumina behaved exactly contrarily.

$Fe_2O_3$ Aggregation and Sintering of Ba-Ferrite ($Fe_2O_3$ 응집상태와 Ba-Ferrite의 소결성)

  • The effects of$ Fe_2O_3$ aggregation on the sintering of Ba-ferrite (BaFe$_{12}O_{19}$) were studied. $BaCO_3-Fe_2O_3$ mixtures were prepared by partial precipitation mixing and ball-mill mixing method using two different $Fe_2O_3 $powders. Techniques employed were TG, XRD and SEM. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the over all reaction basically consists of the two consecutive reaction; $BaCO_3 + 6Fe_2O_3\;{\longrightarrow}\;BaFe_2O_3 + 5Fe_2O_3 + CO_2{\uparrow}\;BaFe_2O_4 + 5Fe_2O_3 \;{\longrightarrow}\;BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ It is also shown that the aggregation state of $Fe_2O_3$ raw materials, as well as the mixing method, has a remarkable effect on solid state reaction between $BaCO_3\;and\;Fe_2O_3$.

Effect of Molecular Weight of Chitosan on Flocculation of Suspended Solids in Rhodamine 6G-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate System (키토산 분자량에 따른 Rhodamine 6G-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate계의 응집효과에 관한 연구)

  • Chitin was extracted from crab shell of Portuns triberculatus and deacethylated to yield chitosan with various molecular weights. The absorption and the fluorescence spectra of Rhodamine 6G(Rh 6G)-sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and Rh 6G-chitosan systems were obtained. From the spectra, we observed that the absorption and the fluorescence intensity of Rh 6G-SDS system decreased when S/D(the concentration of SDS to that of Rh 6G ratio) was below or at 32, while they increased when S/D was above 32. From the suspended solid(SS) removal rate and the transmittance of Rh 6G-SDS-chitosan system, we found that when S/D ratio was 32 its flocculating behaviour was much stronger than Rh 6G-SDS system. As the concentration and the molecular weight of chitosan increased, we also found that S/D range was extended from 32 to 100. With increasing the molecular weight of chitosan, the SS removal rate increased around pH 2~9 but decreased remarkably at pH>12.

Observation of Effects of Phosphatidylcholine and Al Salts Concentration on the Formation of Vesicles by TEM (베시클 생성에 미치는 Phosphatidylcholine과 알루미늄 염 농도의 영향에 관한 TEM 관찰)

  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was used to monitor the response of vesicle size and the intervesicle agglomeration with a variety of experimental parameters. Considered parameters are: (a) reaction temperture, (b) concentration of phosphatidylcholine, (c) concentration of aluminum ion with fixed concentration of phosphatidylcholine at 0.39 mM, and (d) mixed concentration of aluminum and phosphatidylcholine when fixing the weight ratio of phosphatidylcholine to aluminum at 0.01. Controlling these parameters, vesicle size changed and intervesicle agglomeration observed. As reaction temperature and the concentration of phosphatidylcholine increase, vesicle size decreases. With 0.2 M of aluminum ion, abnormal vesicle growth led by intervesicle agglomeration and coalescence was observed. When weight ratio of phosphatidylcholine to aluminum is 0.01, optimal vesicle size and size distribution can be obtained.

  • 탄소나노튜브(carbon nanotubes : CNTs)는 뛰어난 전기적, 물리적인 특성을 가지고 있기 때문에 다양한 분야에서 이를 활용하려는 노력들이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. CNTs의 전기적인 특성은 직경에 의해 결정되므로, 직경을 균일하게 제어하는 일이 CNTs를 기반으로 한 전자소자 응용에 가장 중요한 사항이라 할 수 있다. 일반적으로 화학기상증착법(chemical vapor deposition, CVD)으로 합성된 CNTs의 직경은 촉매의 크기에 의존하기 때문에, 촉매의 크기를 제어하기 위한 다양한 연구들이 활발히 진행되고 있다[1-3]. 하지만 CNTs의 성장온도 근처에서 촉매 입자는 표면 확산(surface diffusion)에 의해 응집(agglomeration)되기 때문에 작고 균일한 크기의 촉매를 얻기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 Si(001) 기판 위에 지지층(supporting layer)인 Al의 두께를 변화시켜 증착하고, 열적산화과정을 통해 $Al_2O_3$ 층을 형성한 후 Fe을 증착하여 CNTs를 합성하였다. $Al_2O_3$ 지지층과 Fe 촉매입자의 구조와 화학적 상태를 원자힘현미경 (atomic force microscopy, AFM), 주사전자현미경 (scanning electron microscopy, SEM), 투과전자현미경 (transmission electron microscopy, TEM), X-선 광전자 분광기(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy)를 통해 분석하였고, 성장된 CNTs는 SEM, TEM, 라만 분광법 (Raman spectroscopy)을 통해 분석하였다. 그 결과, $Al_2O_3$ 층은 두께에 따라 각기 다른 표면 거칠기(RMS roughness)와 결정립(grain)의 크기를 갖게 되며, 이러한 표면구조가 Fe 촉매입자의 표면확산에 의한 응집에 관여하여 CNTs의 직경에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 $Al_2O_3$ 지지층의 두께가 15 nm인 경우, Fe의 응집현상이 억제되어 좁은 직경분포를 지닌 고순도 단일벽 탄소나노튜브(Single-walled CNTs)가 성장되는 것을 확인하였다.

Concentration and Immunological Characteristics of Lectin in Soybean (Glycine max L.) Cultivars (대두품종의 렉틴 함량과 면역학적 특성)

  • The immunochemical property of lectin in soybean and the presence of lectin in seeds of six soybean cultivars were investigated by immunochemical methods. All seeds of six soybean cultivars formed one precipitin line against the soybean lectin antibody and showed immunochemically homologous precipitin pattern among the cultivars in immunodouble diffusion test. Four antigenic components in soybean lectin were detected by the crossed imuno-electrophoresis of a soybean seed antigen against the soybean lectin antibody. Cultivar, Jangyeop-kong contained the highest amount of lectin and the next were Kwangkyo, Hwangkeumkong, Baegunkong, and Jangbaegkong or Paldal-kong in order of lectin content. The lectin purified from the seeds of six soybean cultivars agglutinated rabbit erythrocytes, but did not agglutinate the fungal spores which were Fusarium sp., Alternaria sp., Cuvalaria sp., and Colletotrichum sp. isolated from the infected seeds or leaves of soybean.

  • A simple method to calculate the interfacial tension between two immiscible molten polymers has been developed. The theory is based on the significant structure theory of liquids. The energy of adhesion is expressed as a geometric mean of the cohesion energies multiplied by correction factor $({\Phi}12)$, ${\Delta}E_{12}={\Phi}_{12}\sqrt{{\Delta}E_{11}{\Delta}E_{22^{\circ}}$. In the calculation of ${\Delta}E_{11}\;and\;{\Delta}E_{22}$, a quasilattice of polymer chains has been assumed. It is assured that, besides the dispersion force, the polar force interactions between polymer constituent groups should be considered in the calculation of the interfacial tensions.

  • This experiment has been carried out for the removal of long-lived radioactive-nuclides (Sr-90, Ru-106, Cs-137 and Ce-144) contained in the low-level radioactive effluents from the spent fuel reprocessing plant and nuclear power plant, in order to determine the decontaminability of various chemical coagulants and domestic clay mineral (montmorillonite). Phosphate process showed prominent efficiency for the removal of Ce-144, and lime-soda process did good removal efficiency for Sr-90. About Cs-137 copper-ferrocyanide process is much desirable. In phosphate or lime-soda process, most favorable removal efficiency was obtained at more than pH 11. The montmorillonite treated with sodium chloride showed a considerable improvement in the removal of the radioactive-nuclides. By a combined chemicals-montmorillionite process, the radioactive-nuclides could be more effectively removed than by the only chemicals process.

열분해 반응기 내에서의 Si 오염입자에 관한 수치해석적 연구

  • 열분해 반응기 내에서 실리콘 필름을 성장시키는 것은 반도체/디스플레이, 태양전지, 신소재 등 다양한 분야에서 중요한 공정이다. 더욱이 반도체 소자 선폭이 줄어들면서 나노입자의 오염 제어가 더불어 중요해지고 있다. 생산 공정 기술의 집적화에 따라 패턴 사이 거리가 작아지고, 이에 불과 수 십 나노미터크기의 오염입자에 의해서 패턴불량이 발생하고 생산수율을 감소시킨다. 일반적으로 반도체 공정 중 발생한 오염입자는 반응기 내의 가스가 물리/화학적 공정에 의해 핵생성(nucleation)이 일어나 핵(nuclei)이 생성되고, 이 때 표면반응 및 응집(coagulation)에 의해 성장하게 된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 열분해 반응기 내에서 사일렌(SiH4) 가스를 열분해하여 발생되는 실리콘 오염입자의 핵생성과 성장 모델을 정립하고, 생성된 오염입자의 거동과 전달 현상을 이론적으로 고찰하였다. 열분해 반응기와 같은 기상공정(Gas to particle conversion)에서 오염입자가 생성될 때, 그 성질과 크기 등에 물리/화학적 영향을 주는 요소는 전구체/이송기체의 농도 및 유량, 작동 압력, 작동 온도와 반응기 고유 특성 등이 있다. 수치해석의 정당성과 빠른 계산을 위해 단순화시킨 0D 모델인 Batch 반응기와 1D모델인 plug flow 반응기 등에서 SiH4 가스의 열분해 과정시 생성되는 Si cluster를 상용코드인 CHEMKIN 4.1.1을 이용하여 계산하였으며, 2D모델인 Shear flow 반응기로 확장시켜 Si 오염입자가 생성특성을 연구하였다.

Saturation curves for chemical coagulation of wastewater treatment (화학 응집제 투입에 따른 수질항목별 하수처리 반응곡선)

  • Recently the Government has announced updated water quality standards for wastewater treatment effluent (become effective in 2012). That includes highly enforced regulations for T-P, BOD and COD, and a large budget, in particular for phosphorus removal, was set by the Ministry of environment. Chemical coagulation destabilizes colloidal particles so that particles grow to larger flocs, and solid particles are removed by solid-liquid separation. The efficiency of chemical coagulation depends on a various factors, including coagulant types and costs, construction and operation costs for the treatment facilities and so on. The proper selection should be based on the treatment efficiency of coagulants and underlying costs. The current research was to evaluate the treatment efficiencies of coagulants on a variety of wastewater influents and to develop saturation curves for several water quality parameters. Typical $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were tested under a range of coagulant concentrations. The pollutant removal efficiencies of chemical treatment both for the $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were especially high for T-P, followed by SS, BOD and COD. Correlation test also proved the highest relationship between SS and T-P.
