Effect of Hydrogen Addition on Autoignited Methane Lifted Flames (자발화된 메탄 부상화염에 대한 수소 첨가의 영향)

  • Autoignited lifted flames in laminar jets with hydrogen-enriched methane fuels have been investigated experimentally in heated coflow air. The results showed that the autoignited lifted flame of the methane/hydrogen mixture, which had an initial temperature over 920 K, the threshold temperature for autoignition in methane jets, exhibited features typical of either a tribrachial edge or mild combustion depending on fuel mole fraction and the liftoff height increased with jet velocity. The liftoff height in the hydrogen-assisted autoignition regime was dependent on the square of the adiabatic ignition delay time for the addition of small amounts of hydrogen, as was the case for pure methane jets. When the initial temperature was below 920 K, where the methane fuel did not show autoignition behavior, the flame was autoignited by the addition of hydrogen, which is an ignition improver. The liftoff height demonstrated a unique feature in that it decreased nonlinearly as the jet velocity increased. The differential diffusion of hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in the decrease in the liftoff height with increasing jet velocity.

  • We performed numerical simulations of freely propagating premixed flames at atmospheric pressure to investigate the influence of trifluoromethane on $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ flames under oxygen enrichment. Trifluoromethane significantly contributed toward a reduction in flame speed, the magnitude of which was larger in terms of the physical effect than the chemical effect. More trifluoromethane could be added and consumed on oxygen-enriched $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ flames. $CHF_3$ was decomposed primarily via $CF_3{\rightarrow}CF_2{\rightarrow}CF{\rightarrow}CF:O{\rightarrow}CO$ and $CHF_3+M{\rightarrow}CF_2+HF+M$ played an important role in oxygen-enhanced flames. When an inhibitor was added to oxygen-enriched flames, the position of the maximum concentration of active radicals was shifted to a relatively low temperature range, and the net rate of OH became higher than that of H.

Stability of premixed double concentric jets flame with a recirculation zone (재순환역을 수반하는 동축분류예혼합화염에 관한 연구)

  • Stability limits of a double concentric jets flame and the structure of recirculation zone formed behind a thick burner rim were investigated. To control the flame stability, swirled secondary air flow ranging 0.13-0.71 of swirl number, and air, fuel, and mixture gas injection from an injection coaxial slit set on burner rim were examined. Flame stability limits, flame shapes, lengths of recirculation zone, temperature distributions, residence times, air ratios in the recirculation zone were measured. The following results were obtained. (1) Lean limits were considerably widened by a strong swirl because the recirculation zone was enlarged. (2) At fuel injection as well as mixture injection, lean limits were also extended. But, air injection had no effect on stability limits. (3) Injected gas seems to diffuse into the recirculation zone through its outer boundary surrounded the secondary air. Therefore, chemical structure in the recirculation zone with air injection coincides with that without injection. (4) Injection position had no effect on flame stability limits.

Influence of the Combustion Flame on the Dielectric Strength of an Air Gap due to Fire Occurrence (화재발생에 따른 연소화염이 공기의 절연내력에 미치는 영항)

  • Occurring fire or burning bushes beneath overhead power lines have caused system disturbances in many countries. In this study, various tests in the simulated condition of power lines were conducted so as to investigate the reduction in insulation strength caused by combustion flame. Characteristics of the ac and dc flashover voltages in the vertical needle-plane, sphere-plane and rod-plane electrode system were investigated when the combustion flames were present near the high-voltage electrode. As the results of an experimental investigation, It was found that the average reduction characteristics of flashover voltages with the sphere-plane system, in comparison with the no-flames case, were about 1/3 times when the ac voltages were applied.

Influence of Combustion Flame on Breakdown Characteristics of Vertical-Model Power Lines (수직배열 모델 전력선의 절연파괴 특성에 미치는 화염의 영향)

  • Occurring forest fire or burning bushes beneath overhead transmission lines have caused breakdown disturbances of the system in many countries. In this study, experiments for flashover characteristics in the simulated condition of vertical power lines were conducted so as to investigate the reduction in insulation strength caused by combustion flame. As the results of an experimental investigation, it is demonstrated that flame can reduce breakdown voltages of the model lines according to height(h) of flame. The breakdown voltages were decreased with decreasing the height(h) of flame it can be seen that the average reduction of flashover levels, in comparison with the no-flame case, are 46.2[%] for h=9[cm] and 62.5[%] for h=3[cm] when ac voltage is applied.

Flashover Characteristics of Vertical-type Model Power Line in the Presence of Combustion Flame (연소화염 존재 시 수직형 모델 전력선의 섬락 특성)

  • A forest fire in the area of power line installations may be caused by flashover disturbances in power systems. In this study, experiments were conducted so as to investigate the reduction in dielectric strength caused by combustion flame, and flashover characteristics in the simulated condition of vertical-type model power lines were examined by making shorter and longer the horizontal distance(s) between combustion flame and high-voltage conductors under the application of 60[Hz] a.c. and d.c. high-voltages. As the results of the experimental investigation it is demonstrated that flame can reduce flashover voltages of the model air-gap in shorter range of the horizontal distance(s). Relative air density is considered in order to analyze the reduction causes of the flashover voltages, and it can be seen that the relative air density has a great influence on the flashover characteristics under the presence of combustion flame.

  • This study is intended to understand flame behavior of pool and whirl fire by height of fire source. Liquid fuel was methanol which is used in many studies for pool and whirl fire. Size of vessel was $100{\times}100{\times}50$ and the vessel was made by stainless steel. Combustion time, mass loss rate, flame temperature, flame height and air entrainment rate from the outside to flame were measured, and flame behavior was visualized with video camera. Based on the experiment, it was found that combustion characteristics by height of fire source got a more effect on whirl fire than pool fire.

Structure and Suppression of Nonpremixed Counterflow Flames (비예혼합 대향류화염의 구조와 소화)

  • Measurements with filaments and thermocouples and computations with Oppdif and FDS were carried out to investigate the impact of flame strain, agent addition, and buoyancy on the structure and extinction of nonpremixed counterflow flames. Measurements through 2.2 s drop tests in microgravity conditions and experiments in normal gravity conditions were compared with the results of computations. For the global strain rates 7 s$^{-1}$ through 100 s$^{-1}$ , the turning point behavior in the critical nitrogen concentration at O-g was confirmed. The effects of buoyancy, that is, changes in the flame curvature and thickness were also confirmed by the computations with FDS. There was agreement in the peak flame temperature and its position between the computations and the measurements in the near extinction methane/air diffusion flames in microgravity.

Computation of Nonpremixed Methane-Air Diffusion Flames in Microgravity (무중력에서의 비예혼합 메탄-공기 확산화염의 전산)

  • The structure of the nonpremixed methane-air counterflow flames in microgravity was investigated by axisymmetric simulation with Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) to evaluate the numerical method and to see the effects of strain rate and fuel concentration on the diffusion flame structure in microgravity. Results of FDS for the methane mole fractions, $X_m$=20, 50, and 80% in the fuel stream, and the global strain rates $a_g$=20, 50, and $90s^{-1}$ for each methane mole fraction were compared with those of OPPDIF, an one-dimensional flamelet code. There was good agreement in the temperature and axial velocity profiles between the axisymmetric and one-dimensional computations. It was shown that FDS is applicable to the counterflow flames in a wide range of strain rate and fuel concentration by predicting accurately the flame thickness, flame positions and stagnation points.

Chemical Reactions in the Coal-Methane-Air Flame (석탄화염내 화학반응에 관한 연구)

  • The present study is described of the flame structure of one-dimensional, flat, premixed, laminar, coal-air flame with some addition of methane for the flame stability. A low pressure burner operating at a combustion pressure of 0.3 arm was employed in order to extend the reaction zone. Predicted results from the models considered in the present study are compared with experimental results. Comparisons are included gas temperatures, species concentrations, char analysis and measured burning velocity. Among the models, Model II $I^{*}$-d, which specified devolatilization rate constants and a char surface area factor S=4, resulted in good agreement within the present experimental ranges. The results of char analysis suggest that the extent of the reaction occurring on the panicle might be underestimated in the model so that the char surface area should be increased. A value of 4 for this factor was given by sensitivity analysis of change in char surface area. Again, model II $I^{*}$-d gave satisfactory predictions of burning velocities over most of the experimental range studied. It has been clearly shown that the particle diameter appreciably affects the rates of devolatilisation and char oxidation through the effects of thermal lag and volumetric reactive surface area, consequently laminar burning velocity.ity.
