A Numerical Study for the Scalar Dissipation Rate and the Flame Curvature with Flame Propagation Velocity in a Lifted Flame (부상화염에서 화염전파속도에 따른 스칼라소산율과 곡률반경에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • Flame propagation velocity is the one of the main mechanism of the stabilization of triple flame. To quantity the triple flame propagation velocity, Bilger presents the triple flame propagation velocity, depending on the mixture fraction gradient, based on the laminar jet flow theory. However, in spite of these many analyses, there has not been any attempt to quantify the triple flame propagation velocity with the flame radius of curvature and scalar dissipation rate. In the present research, there was discussion about the radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate, through the numerical study. As a result, we have known that the flame propagation velocity was linear with the nozzle exit velocity and scalar dissipation rate decreases nonlinearly with the flame propagation velocity and radius of curvature of flame increases linearly. Also radius of curvature of flame decreases non-linearly with the scalar dissipation rate. Therefore, we ascertained that there was corelation among the scalar dissipation rate, radius of flame curvature and flame propagation velocity.

  • Flame propagation velocity is the one ofmainmechanismof the stabilization of triple flame. However, in spite of these many analyses, there was not presented any relation of these variables, triple flame propagation velocity, radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate indirectly. In the present research, we have checked the results of numerical simulation with experiment and numerical analysis and verified the flame propagation velocity with a scalar dissipation rate proposed by Bilger through the numerical simulation. Also we have clarified that flame propagation velocity was depended on the radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate.

Experimental Study on the Flame Spread Characteristics under Reduced Atmospheric Pressures and Elevated Oxygen Concentrations (저기압 고산소 환경에서 화염 전파특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The characteristics of flame spread under similar atmospheric conditions to those inside the first stage of launch vehicles were investigated to provide fundamental knowledge to prevent fires and explosions of vehicles during launching operations. To this end, the rate of flame spread on the solid fuel was measured at elevated oxygen concentrations and reduced atmospheric pressures. A 0.18 mm diameter optical fiber was used as a solid fuel. The experimental results indicated that elevated oxygen concentrations can increase the rate of flame spread while increasing the atmospheric pressures to 1 atm can lead to decreases in the rate of flame spread. The increases in the rate of flame spread with pressure is due mainly to reductions in the convective heat loss that are clarified through an analysis of the pressure dependence on the convective heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this present study, we experimentally investigated the effects of electric fields on the characteristics of flames spreading over electric-wires with AC fields. The dependence of the rate at which a flame spreads over polyethylene-insulated wires on the frequency and amplitude of the applied AC electric field was examined. The spreading of the flame can be categorized into linear spreading and non-linearly accelerated spreading of flame. This categorization is based on the axial distribution of the field strength of the applied electric field. The rate at which the flame spreads is highly dependent on the inclined direction of the wire fire. It could be possible to explain the spreading of the flame on the basis of thermal balance.

Effect of the Obstacles on Explosion Pressure and Propagation Velocity in Closed Tube (밀폐배관 내의 장애물에 의한 폭발압력과 화염전파속도의 영향)

  • In this study, experimental study was conducted to examine the influence of explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity of methane-air mixtures due to the obstacles placed in the explosion space. We used the quantified parameter named barrier ratio in order to generalize the effect of explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity in the closed explosion space with obstacles. From experimental observations, the explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity regardless of the number of obstacles increased with barrier ratio. In the same methane concentration of 10% methane, the flame propagation velocity without obstacle (barrier ratio = 0) was 3.46 m/s but 24.24 m/s (increase about 7 times) with 3 obstacle and barrier ratio of 0.98. In the same barrier ratio, explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity increased sharply with increasing of the number of obstacles.

  • Flame stability is the one of the main mechanism of laminar lifted flame and flame propagation velocity becomes a yardstick to measure the flame stability. Bilge has presented the flame propagation velocity of the triple flame and the flame stability mechanism related the flame configuration and mixture fraction. However, there was not able to observe all process of flame ignition and extinction for small nozzle diameter. In this paper, we have subdivided the flame configuration and stability mechanism and classified the flame behavior with a nozzle diameter. Also we have subdivided the 'triple flame propagation opened' and the 'triple flame propagation closed' from the triple flame propagation of triple flame criterion.

  • 화염스트레치와 확산선호도가 예혼합화염에 미치는 영향을 몇가지 모델에 대해 현상적으로 고 찰하였다. 즉, 정상상태의 구형화염, 구형으로 전파되는 화염, 균일유동장내의 곡면화염, 일차원 평면화염, 그리고 확대유동장내에서 스트레치된 평면화염등을 고찰하였으며, 이 해석의 결과는 화염면의 면적 변화율로 정의된 화염스트레치의 제인자들 즉, 비균일 접선속도장과 전파화염의 곡률에 의한 영향들이 공통적 특성을 나타냄을 보여주고 있다. 화염스트레치와 확산선호도가 화염전파속도에 미치는 복합효과는 세가지로 나타나는데 이는 화염온도의 변화에 따른 화학반 응강도의 변동, 열 및 물질확산의 강도차이, 그리고 대류 및 확산전달의 방향의 상이함에 기인 한다.

  • A numerical analysis of reactive flow in a liftoff flame is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of liftoff flame. To verify reliance of numerical calculation, the liftoff heights of liftoff flame for various fuel exit velocities are compared between the existing experimental research results and the present calculation results. The flame propagation velocity is conducted at the flow redirection point which is on a stoichiometric line ahead of flame front. This point was selected constant distance from triple point regardless of fuel exit velocity at the previous research. This causes considerable errors for the flame propagation velocity and scalar dissipation rate. The main issue of the present research is to establish the resonable method to select the redirection point and so that to clarify the relationship between flame propagation velocity and scalar dissipation rate, which is the core properties in a triple flame stability.

  • 공간적 화염전파에 대한 실험적인 파악을 통하여 오토엔진에서의 연소과정과 진행을 위한 깊은 통찰을 할 수 있다. 그것을 통하면 매우 희박한 공기, 연료 혼합기의 경우 실린더에서 직접소염 과정을 확인할 수도 있고 hydrocarbon의 불완전 연소와 나타나는 qunching zone간의 관계를 조사할 수도 있다. 광전도 섬유기술(Lichtleit-fasertechnik)을 사용하여 새로 개발된 측정방법을 이용하여 단기통 오토엔진에서 화염면의 공간적인 전파과정과 매우 희박한 공기 연료 혼합기 에서의 quench zone의 출현을 조사하였다. 측정결과들은 공기연료 혼합기가 희박해 질수록 화 염전파 과정이 점점 느려지는 것을 보여준다. 아주 높은 공기 과잉율을 갖는 엔진 운전에서는 화염속도와 연소속도가 매우 급하게 감소한다. 그리하여 화염면은 팽창 단계에서 상대적으로 증가하는 피스톤속도 때문에 더이상 피스톤을 따를 수가 없으며 그로 인해 직접 피스톤상부에 소염대가 형성된다. 그에 의해 배기가스에서의 hydrocarbon 방출의 급격한 증가와 효율이 급격히 감소하는 엔진 운전과 관련이 지어진다.

Combustion Characteristics of Orifice Size of Torch in a CVCC (토치 점화 장치의 오리피스 직경에 따른 연소특성 파악)

  • Seven different size of orifice were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The initial flame development and flame propagation were analyzed by the mass fraction burn and combustion enhancement rate. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass fraction burn and the combustion enhancement rates. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by the shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burned fraction were increased when using the torch-ignition device. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage.
