  • Nonlinear dynamics of pulsating instability-diffusional-thermal instability with Lewis numbers sufficiently higher than unity-in counterflow diffusion flames, is numerically investigated by imposing a Damkohler number perturbation. The flame evolution exhibits three types of nonlinear behaviors, namely, decaying pulsating behavior, diverging behavior (which leads to extinction), and stable limit-cycle behavior. The stable limit-cycle behavior is observed in counterflow diffusion flames, but not in diffusion flames with a stagnant mixing layer. The critical value of the perturbed Damkohler number, which indicates the region where the three different flame behaviors can be observed, is obtained. A stable simple limit cycle, in which two supercritical Hopf bifurcations exist, is found in a narrow range of Damkohler numbers. As the flame temperature is increased, the stable simple limit cycle disappears and an unstable limit cycle corresponding to subcritical Hopf bifurcation appears. The period-doubling bifurcation is found to occur in a certain range of Damkohler numbers and temperatures, which leads to extend the lower boundary of supercritical Hopf bifurcation.

  • Gas explosion characteristics of hydrogen and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) were measured in 6L cylindrical vessel, and experiment for explosion to fire transition phenomena of the gases were carried out using the 270L vessel. Explosion characteristics were measured using the stain type pressure transducer and explosion to fire transition phenomena was analyzed with the hish-speed camera. Base on the experiment, it was found that explosion pressure was most high slightly above the stoichiometric concentration, and explosion pressure rise rate and flame propagation velocity were proportional to the combustion velocity. And we find that those kind of explosion characteristics affect the explosion-to-fire transition, in addition, explosion flame temperature, flame residence time, are important parameters in explosion-to-fire transition.

  • Seven different size of orifice were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The initial flame development and flame propagation were analyzed by the mass fraction burn and combustion enhancement rate. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass fraction burn and the combustion enhancement rates. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by the shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burned fraction were increased when using the torch-ignition device. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage.

  • Combustion processes in an optically-accessible single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with a highpressure common-rail injection system were investigated for JP-8 and diesel. Direct imaging and two-color thermometry were employed to verify the emission trend for both fuels. The combustion process was characterized by image analysis with focus on luminosity. The results of two-color thermometry were analyzed on the basis of the flame temperature and KL factor distribution. Analysis of the combustion process by direct imaging showed that the ignition delay was longer for JP-8 than for diesel, while the flame was extinguished rapidly. Analysis of the flame luminosity showed that the combustion intensity was higher for diesel and that the flame lasted for a longer duration in this case. Two-color thermometry results showed that the high-temperature region extended over a large area during JP-8 combustion, implying the formation of a large amount of $NO_x$. In addition, the KL factor showed low level over a large area and relatively homogeneous in the case of JP-8 combustion, which implied that less smoke was produced when using this fuel.

  • We experimentally investigated lifted propane jet flames diluted with nitrogen to obtain flame-stability maps based on heat-loss-induced self-excitation. We found that heat-loss-induced self-excitations are caused by conductive heat loss from premixed flame branches to trailing diffusion flames as well as soot radiation. The conductive-heat-loss-induced self-excitation at frequencies less than 0.1 Hz is explained well by a suggested mechanism, whereas the oscillation of the soot region induces a self-excitation of lift-off height of the order of 0.1 Hz. The suggested mechanism is also verified from additive experiments in a room at constant temperature and humidity. The heat-loss-induced self-excitation is explained by the Strouhal numbers as a function of the relevant parameters.

  • The characteristics of the spread of a forest fire are generally related to the attributes of combustibles, geographical features, and meteorological conditions, such as wind conditions. The most common methodology used to create a prediction model for the spread of forest fires, based on the numerical analysis of the development stages of a forest fire, is an analysis of heat energy transmission by the stage of heat transmission. When a forest fire breaks out, the analysis of the transmission velocity of heat energy is quantifiable by the spread velocity of flame movement through a physical and chemical analysis at every stage of the fire development from flame production and heat transmission to its termination. In this study, the formula used for the 1-D surface forest fire behavior prediction model, derived from a numerical analysis of the surface flame spread rate of solid combustibles, is introduced. The formula for the 1-D surface forest fire behavior prediction model is the estimated equation of the flame spread velocity, depending on the condition of wind velocity on the ground. Experimental and theoretical equations on flame duration, flame height, flame temperature, ignition temperature of surface fuels, etc., has been applied to the device of this formula. As a result of a comparison between the ROS(rate of spread) from this formula and ROSs from various equations of other models or experimental values, a trend suggesting an increasing curved line of the exponent function under 3m/s or less wind velocity condition was identified. As a result of a comparison between experimental values and numerically analyzed values for fallen pine tree leaves, the flame spread velocity reveals a prediction of an approximately 10% upward tendency under wind velocity conditions of 1 to 2m/s, and of an approximately 20% downward tendency under those of 3m/s.

  • [ $LiCoO_{2}$ ] nanoparticles were synthesized from leach liquor of lithium ion battery waste using flame spray pyrolysis. Electrode Materials containing lithium and cobalt could be concentrated with thermal and mechanical treatment. After dissolution of used cathode materials of the lithium battery with nitric acid, the molar ratio of Li/Co in the leach liquor was adjusted at 1.0 by adding a fresh $LiNO_{3}$ solution. The nanoparticles synthesized by the flame spray pyrolysis showed clear crystallinity and were nearly spherical, and their average primary particle diameters ranged from 11 to 35 nm. The average particle diameter increased with an increase in the molar concentration of the precursor. Raising the maximum flame temperature by controlling the gas flow rates also led to an increase in the average diameter of the particles. The $LiCoO_{2}$ powder was proved to have good characteristics as cathode active materials in charge/discharge capacity and cyclic performance.

  • Nonlinear dynamics of striped diffusion flames, by the diffusional-thermal instability with Lewis numbers sufficiently less than unity, is numerically investigated by examining various two-dimensional flame-structure solutions. The Lewis numbers for fuel and oxidizer are assumed to be identical and an overall single-step Arrhenius-type chemical reaction rate is employed in the model. Particular attention is focused on identifying the flame-stripe solution branches corresponding to each distinct stripe pattern and hysteresis encountered during the transition. At a Damkohler number slightly greater than the extinction Damkohler number, eight-stripe solution first emerges from one dimensional solution. The eight-stripe solution survives Damkohler numbers much smaller than the extinction Damkohler number until the transition to four-stripe solution occurs at the first forward transition Damkohler number. At the second forward transition Damkohler number, somewhat smaller than the first transition Damkohler number, the transition to two-stripe solution occurs. However, anu further transition from two-stripe solution to one-stripe solution is not always possible even if one-stripe solution can be independently accessed for particular initial conditions. The Damkohler number ranges for two-stripe and one-stripe solutions are found to be virtually identical because each stripe is an independent structure if distance between stripes is sufficiently large. By increasing the Damkohler number, the backward transition can be observed. In comparison with the forward transition Damkohler numbers, the corresponding backward transition Damkohler numbers are always much greater, thereby indicating significant hysteresis between the stripe patterns of strained diffusion flames.

  • Recently, waste gas incineration is increasing due to strong environmental regulatory system in Korea. These incinerating facilities are usually connected with the top of the storage tank through pipeline and incinerate off gas with the flame. Therefore, the flame originated from these facilities is likely to move back into pipeline and might cause an explosion of the storage tank. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to suggest the preventive measures and the way to improve the safety of these incineration systems through the cause analysis of a major industrial accident occurred in a acrylic acid manufacturing process in Korea. As a result of the study, the preventive measures are suggested as follows. (1) Air or inert gas inflow facilities should be well designed to dilute flammable gases into air or inert gas sufficiently before the blower is restarted in order to prevent the explosion (2) It is needed for the detonation-type flame arresters to be installed on the top of the storage tanks. (3) In case of using the deflagration-type flame arresters, it is necessary to install a rupture disk before the arresters, or blow off the flame outside tanks by connecting the tank top and the incinerator with hood-type pipe. (4) TDR should be installed to be restarted automatically after the momentary power failure.
