Chemical Interaction in Downstream Flows of SNG/Air Symmetric Premixed Counterflow Flame (SNG/Air 예혼합 대향류 대칭화염의 후류 유동장에서 화학적 상호작용)

  • Experimental and numerical data were compared through a counterflow burner for the characteristic of basic flame about SNG- C11. In order to use the numerical mechanism accurately, the validation was carried out at strain rate ($a_g=30$, $120s^{-1}$) and the UCSD model showed satisfactory results. The effective Lewis number of the extinction boundary, and the behavior of extinction for the symmetric flames of the SNG-C11, could be explained through the trend of $Le_V$, and the flame of the extinction condition was inspected by the major species, key radicals and the chemical reaction paths. The interactions phenomenon in the merged flames has chemical reaction path for producing $HO_2$ were generated at stagnation point. It can be expected the one of major factors in interaction phenomenon.

Local Behaviour of Propagating Flames in an Explosion Chamber (폭발챔버에서 전파하는 화염의 국부 거동)

  • Experimental studies were carried out in an explosion chamber to investigate the influences of multiple cylinder obstacles on local flame propagation. The chamber dimension is 235 mm in height with a $1,000{\times}950\;mm^2$ rectangular cross section and a large vent area of $1,000{\times}320\;mm^2$. Multiple cylinder bars with obstruction ratio of 30% were used. In order to examine the interaction between the propagating flames and the obstacles, temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed video camera. The propagation behaviour of local flame fronts around the left obstacle was analyzed in terms of two different methods such as the incremental burnt area divided by the flame front length and the average of the local propagation velocity determined at each point along the flame front. It was found that two methods give good consistency.

Large Eddy Simulation of Swirling Premixed Flames in a Model Gas Turbine Combustor (모형 가스터빈 연소기에서 선회 예혼합화염의 대와동모사(LES))

  • In the present paper, the swirl flow structure and flame characteristics of turbulent premixed combustion in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). A G-equation flamelet model is employed to simulate the unsteady flame behavior. When inlet swirl number is increased, the distinct flow structures, such as the shapes of corner recirculation and center toroidal recirculation zone, are observed and the flame length is shorted gradually. Also, the phenomena of flashback are identified at strong swirl intensity. In order to get the accurate description of unsteady flame behavior, the predictive ability of the acoustic wave in a combustor is primarily evaluated. It is found that the vortex generated near the edge of step plays an important role in the flame fluctuation. Finally it is examined systematically that the flame and heat release fluctuation are coupled strongly to the vortex shedding generated by swirl flow and acoustic wave propagation from the analysis of flame-vortex interaction.

Interactions Between a Propagating Flame and Rectangular Wall Obstacles in a Rectangular Confinement (직사각형 폭발 챔버에서 화염전파와 직사각형 장애물의 상관관계)

  • Experimental studies have been performed to examine the influences of wall obstructions in a rectangular confinement. Three wall obstacles with blockage ratios ranging from 10 to 30% were used. Temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high-speed video camera to investigate the interaction between a propagating flame and the obstacle. The local flame displacement speed and its probability density functions(PDFs) were obtained for the wall obstructions. During the interaction with the sharp-edges of the wall obstacles, the local propagation speed increased. The increase of local speed became larger as the obstruction ratio increased. However, the averaged flame displacement speeds with different blockage ratios were not significantly different within the chamber as shown in the paper of Park et al. The flame front interaction investigated in this work was less dependent of the obstacle obstructions compared to that published in the literature for large L/D.

A numerical study on soot formation in ethylene diffusion flames under 1g and 0g (1g와 0g에서의 에틸렌 확산화염 내 매연 생성 특성에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • A numerical study on soot formation in a laminar ethylene diffusion flame at atmospheric pressure was conducted to obtain a better understanding of the effects of buoyancy on sooting flames under 0g and 1g using a gas-phase reaction mechanism and thermal and transport properties. A simple model was employed to predict soot formation, growth and oxidation with interactions between the gas phase chemistry and the soot chemistry taken into account. Results showed that the flames in 0g are much wider than that of 1g because of the thicker diffusion layer and reduction in axial velocity. The reduction in the axial velocity in 0g results in longer residence times, and resulting in greatly enhanced soot volume fraction. And, under zero-gravity, due to the lack of a buoyancy-induced instability, flame instability disappears.

Combustion Instability Characteristics due to the Beating Phenomenon in the Dual Swirl Gas Turbine Model Combustor (이중선회 가스터빈 모델연소기에서 맥놀이 현상으로 인한 연소불안정 특성)

  • This study is the results related to the combustion instability phenomenon with respect to combustor length and thermal power as variables in dual swirling combustor configuration. Especially, the beating phenomena having the insensitive resonance frequency of relatively constant peaks are observed when the combustor lengths increase in a lower power regime. This beating phenomenon might be occurred due to the interacting behaviors of pilot and main burners with different periods. Therefore, such insensitive response seems to be a result of the beating phenomenon with interaction between the pilot and main flames even though the combustor lengths are increased.

  • This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using SRK (Souve-Redlich-Kwong) equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the real fluid effects and the precise structure of gaseous methane/liquid oxygen coaxial jet flame.

Species Transport Mechanisnn and Flame Structure of Counterflow Nonpremixed Flame Perturbed by a Vortex (와동에 의해 교란된 대향류 비예혼합화염의 화학종 전달기구 및 화염구조)

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$/$N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this computation. The results showed that an initially flat stagnation plane, on which an axial velocity was zero, was deformed into a complex-shaped plane, and an initial stagnation point was moved far away from a vortex head when the counterflow field was perturbed by the vortex. It was noted that the movement of stagnation point could alter the species transport mechanism to the flame surface. It was also identified that the altered species transport mechanism affected the distributions of the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation rate.
