  • In this study, the height of the flame required to estimate the heat flow path and flame spread in pool fire has been applied by the empirical formula, but it is calculated without applying the pressure and temperature parameters of the fire room. Until now, the height of the flame applied to pool fire was $l_F=0.235Q^{2/5}-1.02D$ in the Heskestad empirical formula, but accurate temperature calculation was not possible due to the temperature and pressure which are not influenced by the flame height. Therefore, applying the temperature and pressure around it can calculate the exact flame height, which can be applied to fire investigation and fire dynamics. The structure of the flame is divided into a continuous flame, an intermittent flame, and a buoyancy flame, but it is assumed that the flame height is calculated from the visual aspect to the intermittent flame region, and the temperature of the buoyancy flame is very low. The effect of heat of vaporization on the height of flame was investigated. The results showed that flame height was different according to the pressure and temperature around the fire room.

  • This study was performed by using an LFR (laminar flow reactor), which can be used to carry out different types of research on coal. In this study, an LFR was used to analyze coal flames, tar and soot yields, and structures of chars for two coals depending on their volatile content. The results show that the volatile content and oxygen concentration have a significant effect on the length and width of the soot cloud and that the length and width of the cloud under combustion conditions are less than those under a pyrolysis atmosphere. At sampling heights until 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau (sub-bituminous) coal, which contains a large amount of volatile matter, are less than those of Glencore A.P. (bituminous) coal because tar is oxidized by the intrinsic oxygen component of coal and by radicals such as OH-. On the other hand, at sampling heights above 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau coal are higher than those of Glencore A.P. coal by reacted residual volatile matter, tar and light gas in char and flame. With above results, it is confirmed that the volatile matter content and the intrinsic oxygen component in a coal are significant parameters for length and width of the soot cloud and yields of the soot. In addition, the B.E.T. results and the images of samples (SEM) obtained from the particle separation system of the sampling probe support the above results pertaining to the yields; the results also confirm the pore development on the char surface caused by devolatilization.

  • Electric power which is the energy source of economy and industries requires long distance transportation due to regional difference between its production and consumption, and it is supplied through the multi-loop transmission and distribution system. Prior to its actual use, electric power flows through several transformations by voltage transformers in substations depending on the characteristics of each usage, and a transformer has the structure consisting of the main body, winding wire, insulating oil and bushings. A transformer fire that breaks out in substations entails the primary damage that interrupts the power supply to houses and commercial facilities and causes various safety accidents as well as the secondary economic losses. It is considered that causes of such fire include the leak of insulating oil resulting from the destruction of bottom part of bushings, and the chain reaction of fire due to insulating oil that reaches its ignition point within 1 second. The smoke detector and automatic fire extinguishing system are established in order to minimize fire damage, but a difficulty in securing golden time for extinguishing fire due to delay in the operation of detector and release of gas from the extinguishing system has become a problem. Accordingly, this study was carried out according to needs of active mechanism to prevent the spread of fire and block the leak of insulating oil, in accordance with the importance of securing golden time in extinguishing a fire in its early stage. A bushings fireproof structure was developed by applying the high temperature shape retention materials, which are expanded by flame, and mechanical flame cutoff devices. The bushings fireproof structure was installed on the transformer model produced by applying the actual standards of bushings and flange, and the full scale fire test was carried out. It was confirmed that the bushings fireproof structure operated at accurate position and height within 3 seconds from the flame initiation. It is considered that it could block the spread of flame effectively in the event of actual transformer fire.

  • The use of oxy-fuel combustion and flue gas recirculation (FGR) for $CO_2$ reduction has been studied by many researchers. This study focused on the characteristics of oxy-fuel combustion and the effects of $CO_2$ addition from the point of view of oxygen feeding ratio (OFR) and the position of $CO_2$ addition in order to reproduce an FGR system with a triple concentric multi-jet burner. Oxy-fuel combustion was stable at all OFRs at a fuel flow-rate of 15 lpm, which corresponds to an equivalence ratio of 0.93; however, the structure and length of the flame varied at different OFRs. When $CO_2$ was added in oxy-fuel combustion, various stability modes such as stable, transient, quasistable, unstable, and blow-out were observed. The temperature in the combustion chamber decreased upon $CO_2$ addition in all conditions, and the maximum reduction in temperature was below 1800 K. $CO_2$ concentration with respect to height varied with the volume percent of $CO_2$ at the nozzle tip.

  • This study proposes the experimental methods which shows various guidelines for systematic study of surface forest fuels. The thermal characteristics of surface fire fuels such as Quercus Variabilis and Pinus Densiflora fallen leaves are measured using TGA and Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter. Both of them are common species of Korean forest. Also the combustion characteristics of surface fire fuels are analysed according to the methods which are commonly used in Pool Fire analysis. The measured parameters are gas velocity, temperature, flame height, heat release rate and mass loss rate. A system is designed to simulate the surface fire. Methods and results are shown for the application of forest fire study.

  • The consequence analysis for jet and flash fire accidents by the continuous release of butane vapor was performed and effects of process variables on consequences were analyzed in standard conditions. For the continuous release (87.8 kg/s) of butane vapor at 8m elevated height in the debutanizing process of the naphtha cracking plant operating at 877 kPa, 346.75 K, we found that for the jet fire accident, shape and size of the flame could be predicted and thermal radiation estimated by API model at 200m distance from release point was 1.5kW/$m^2$, and that for the flash fire accident, effect range was 11.2~120.2m. Also, simulation results showed that effects of operating pressures on consequences were larger than those of operating temperatures and results of accidents were increased with increasing operating pressures. At this time, effects of operating pressures on XUFL were smaller(about 1/10) than those on XLFL for the flash fire accident.

  • In this study a Fuel bed where surface fire spreads through is made to measure the data such as the flame height, radiation, spread rate and temperature distribution of Fuel bed. As experimental variables species of trees, wind velocities and slop are chosen. Fallen leaves of Quercus Variabilis (Q.V.) and Pinus Densiflora (P.D.) are used as fuel. Wind velocity is controlled by simply designed wind turnnel from 1 to 5 m/s. Slope of fuel bed is changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$. For the measurements of temperature distribution and spread rate total 35 of K-type 1.6 mm thermocouples are positioned as a lattice design. Radiant heat flow meters are used besides video camera and thermovision camera.

  • An automatic spreading fire extinguisher usually installed in a closed area like a boiler room, a laundry store or a restaurant's kitchen room is one of the fire protection equipments. This extinguisher automatically discharges dry powder, extinguishing fire. As this extinguisher has the extinguishing capability applicable to the nominal protection area, objects outside the area cannot be properly extinguished. However only its number is being requested according to the floor area in the related laws, and the extinguishing capability depends on the distance from a fire source. In this study we tried to investigate the extinguishing capability of the automatic spreading fire extinguisher in accordance with horizontal separation distance from a fire source. It appeared that the maximum horizontal separation distance was about 30 cm for both class A and B fire to be certainly extinguished.

  • The cavity inside the combustor increases the mixing efficiency of fuel and air by inducing a oscillation of the flow and the recirculation area with a low speed, and enables continuous combustion by maintaining the flame. In this study, the characteristics of the internal flow by change in the shape parameters of the cavity were analyzed through experiments and two-dimensional computational analysis. It was observed that the flow in the supersonic combustor was greatly influenced by various shape parameters of cavity besides L/D. Even with the same L/D, it was confirmed that the flow type varies depending on the depth of the cavity, either open or closed type, and the aft ramp angle of the cavity and the height of the combustor also affect the flow characteristics. As a result, the change in the shape parameters of the cavity had a great influence on the total pressure loss.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the salts fortified with Hizikia component on blood pressure and mineral composition in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR/NCrj) and normotensive rats (WKY/NCrj). The two species rats were assigned to three groups and were fed with drinking water to which Hizikia salts were added for 6 weeks. The final blood pressures (BP) among groups of SHR were increased to 12, 4, and 21%, respectively. In terms of urine and fecal minerals, the $Na^+$ contents in two species were significantly higher in the control than in the salt groups, and vice versa with regard to the $ K^+$ contents. The amount of excretion mineral was higher in urine than in feces. The $Na^+$, $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ contents of the liver in SHR were higher in the control than in the salt groups (p<0.05). The $Na^+$ content of the kidney in SHR was higher in the control than in the salt groups, but the content was shown an opposite trend in WKY. The $K^+$ contents were higher in the low salt group (p<0.05). These results may indicate that the salts fortified with the Hizikia component may be useful in lowering systolic blood pressure owing to the maintenance of positive mineral metabolism.
