Research Trends in the Development of Martian Soil Simulants for the Evaluation of Rover Mobility Performance (탐사로버의 주행성능 검토를 위한 인공 화성 토양 개발관련 연구 동향)

  • Scientific exploration of extraterrestrial planets has gripped human imagination since the advent of space travel. Human missions to Mars could produce insight into the essential questions of how, when and where life began on Earth. Such missions would only be feasible using local space resources materials, a concept called in situ-resource utilization (ISRU). The purpose of this paper is to provide a thorough review of the currently available Mars soil simulants and to determine those with geotechnical properties most appropriate for vehicle mobility studies. Sourcing and processing are considered since full-scale studies require bulk quantities of material on the order of tens of tons. This review identifies the simulants with the highest fidelity to Mars wind drift soils. In addition, recommendation guide for mars soil simulant development made.

달과 화성의 토양에서 지하 깊이에 따른 고에너지 우주선 환경 영향 분석

  • 미국, 중국, 일본, 인도 등과 같은 세계 여러 국가들이 달 및 화성 탐사를 수행하고 있는 현시점에서 우리나라도 2025년에 달 탐사를 계획하고 있다. 인간에게 있어서 우주공간은 고에너지 환경의 영향을 많이 받는 곳이다. 향후 달, 화성과 같은 다른 행성으로의 이주를 생각하고 있는 현 시점에서 우리는 고에너지우주방사선 환경의 영향을 고려해야 한다. 지구에서의 인간은 지구 자기장과 대기에 의해 고에너지 우주선 환경으로부터의 영향을 덜 받는다. 그러나 달과 화성의 경우는 다르다. 달의 대기는 거의 없고 자기장도 무시할 정도로 매우 작으며, 화성 또한 자기장이 거의 없으며 대기 또한 얇아서 Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR)나 Solar Energetic Proton (SEP) 등으로부터 인간은 많은 영향을 받을 수 있다. 이러한 위험으로부터 인간이 보호받을 수 있는 곳은 달과 화성의 지표 아래나 동굴이라고 볼 수 있다. 그래서 달 및 화성의 표면과 지하 영역에 대한 고에너지 우주선 환경의 깊이에 따른 영향을 분석하여 어느 정도로 두터운 천장을 가진 동굴이어야 우주인들이 상주하는 지하공간을 지구표면에서의 방사선 환경과 같은 수준으로 유지할 수 있는지를 추정해 보려고 한다. 달 표면 토양의 화학적 구성성분은 Maria와 Highlands로 구분되어 약간의 차이가 있다. 달의 Maria 토양은 $SiO_2$ - 45.4%, $Al_2O_3$ - 14.9%, CaO - 11.8%, FeO - 14.1%, MgO - 9.2%, $TiO_2$ - 3.9%, $Na_2O$ - 0.6%이고 Highlands의 토양은 $SiO_2$ - 45.5%, $Al_2O_3$ - 24.0%, CaO - 15.9%, FeO - 5.9%, MgO - 7.5%, $TiO_2$ - 0.6%, $Na_2O$ - 0.6%의 화학적인 구성비를 가진다. 또한 화성표면은 $SiO_2$ - 43.9%, $Al_2O_3$ - 8.1%, CaO - 6.0%, FeO - 18.1%, MgO - 7.1%, $Na_2O$ - 1.4%의 토양의 화학적인 구성비를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 구성비를 가지고 있는 달과 화성 표면에 대한 우주방사선의 영향을 분석하기 위해서 GEANT4를 사용하여 수행한 전산 모사의 결과를 발표할 것이다.

  • Endlessly, mankind has been pursuing its dream toward understanding and conquering our neighboring planet, Mars since Mars has been identified as a planet. After the development of advanced science and technology of human race in 1960, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) had initiated its dream toward Mars and finally at present mankind acquires numerous important clues of Mars through over forties of space programs toward Mars. Furthermore, mankind takes its effort in colonizing Mars within several decades. This manuscript introduces the history of space mission programs of Mars up to date and major scientific findings to understand the Mars.

  • 미국 유타주 유타사막에 설치된 MDRS(Mars Desert Research Station)는 미국의 비영리기구인 화성학회(The Mars Society)에서 운영하는 화성탐사연구기지다. 화성학회는 1998년 우주비행사, 천문학자, 과학자 4000여명이 모여 만든 비영리연구단체다. 2001년 미국 유타주에 문을 연 MDRS에서는 토양 미생물 검출실험, 태양에너지 조리실험, 영구동토층 연구, 해빙 연구, 드론 정찰 및 지도 작성 등 인류가 화성에 도착했을 때 실제 수행할 연구들을 진행하고 있다. tVN <갈릴레오 : 깨어난 우주> 촬영 차 MDRS에 머물며 과학실험을 수행한 사례를 공유하고 이를 통해 천문학 및 우주탐사에 대한 대중화 방안에 대해 논의해 보고자 한다.

Early Growth Characteristics of Quercus rubra Associated with Soil Physicochemical Properties and Meteorological Factors in Six Regions of South Korea (토양 물리·화학적 성질 및 기상인자에 따른 국내 6개 지역의 루브라참나무 초기 생장 특성)

  • We investigated the early growth characteristics of Quercus rubra planted in six regions (Hwaseong, Yangpyeong, Pyeongchang, Samcheok, Chungju, and Gimje) in South Korea in relation to soil physicochemical properties and meteorological factors. Q. rubra (1-0) were planted at a density of 3,000 trees ha-1. The average height, root collar diameter (RCD), and volume of 8-year-old Q. rubra planted in 2014 were 3.52 m, 3.84 cm, and 0.0023 m3, respectively. The growth parameters of Q. rubra were the highest and lowest in Hwaseong and Pyeongchang, respectively. Correlation analysis among the soil physicochemical properties, meteorological factors, and plantation growth characteristics found that pH was the only soil factor negatively correlated with RCD, and the other soil factors were not significantly correlated with the growth characteristics. However, growth characteristics were positively correlated to average temperature from March to October and daily maximum temperature; and they were negatively correlated to altitude, topology, and the number of rainy days from March to October. In particular, the trees planted in Hwaseong area showed the best early growth characteristics because this area had the highest daily maximum temperature, the x average temperature from March to October, the low altitude, and it is located close to the foot of a mountain. In Pyeongchang, the early growth characteristics were negatively affected by winter cold damage because of the high altitude, low daily minimum temperature, and damage by wild animals. In Hwaseong, meteorological factors such as temperature and altitude were more highly correlated to growth characteristics of Q. rubra than the physicochemical soil properties. These results will provide useful information for determining suitable sites for Q. rubra plantations and for predicting early growth characteristics in response to environmental factors.

Effect of Organic Fertilizer as Bio-com Application on the Changes of Soil Microorganisms, Gas Evolution, and Mineral-N Transformation in Submerged Condition (유기질비료(有機質肥料) Bio-com 시용(施用)이 토양(土壤)의 미생물상(微生物相) 및 화학성(化學性)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the effect of organic fertilizer as Bio-com$^{(R)}$ on the changes of pH and Eh values, gas evolution, ammonification and nitrification, and microbial population with farmer's compost and refused mushroom compost in submerged paddy condition. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Application of compost and refused mushroom compost was increased the pH values than that of NPK alone. Organic fertilizer of Bio-com$^{(R)}$ showed the same results of the farmer's compost or refused mushroom compost. 2. Population of soil microbes as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi was increased by application of compost, refused mushroom compost and Bio-com$^{(R)}$. Moreover, the results were pronounced more with the addition of NPK. 3. The application of Bio-com$^{(R)}$ was effected to the increase of the amount of $NO_3-N$ and the rate of nitrification than NPK, farmer's compost or refused mushroom compost. 4. The amounts of evolved gases as $CH_4$, $CO_2$, and $N_2O$ were not much differed with application of kinds of compost and NPK, but little increasing tendency was observed in application of NPK than that of NPK+kinds of compost.

  • One of the purposes of space exploration is to be able to utilize the unlimited natural resources in the universe. For this purpose, plans for lunar and mars bases have been proposed by leading nations. In order to construct bases and search for resources, it is necessary to employ and develop rovers for surface navigation and exploration. With proper knowledge about Lunar surface, technology for lunar rover development can be established without serious obstacles, since robot technology for rover development has been well prepared in Korea. In this paper, lunar rovers and mars rovers developed and planned by other countries as well as the current status of robot technology in Korea have been analyzed.
