It is inevitable to generate incomplete combustion gases when mankind utilizes fossil fuels. From this point of view, gas separation process of combustion gas suggests the possibility of recycling CO gas. In this study, we fabricated a facilitated transport polymeric composite membrane for CO separation using AgBF4 and HBF4. The copolymer was synthesized via free-radical polymerization of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a main chain and acrylic acid (AA) monomer as a side chain. The polymer synthesis was confirmed by FT-IR and the interactions of graft copolymer with AgBF4, and HBF4 were characterized by TEM. PVA-g-PAA graft copolymer membranes showed good channels for facilitated CO transport. In this perspective, we suggest the novel approach in CO separation membrane area via combination of grafting and facilitated transport.
As declarations of carbon neutrality are spreading throughout the world, much research is being conducted on biodegradable polymers. In this study, nanocellulose, which comprises the largest amount of natural polymer currently available in the world, was proposed as a substitute for non-biodegradable polymers. We chose to modify the surface functional group of crystalline nanocellulose using glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), which is a silane coupling agent, and the product was then used to form a film with low density polyethylene (LDPE). We then conducted measurements using a Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) in addition to measuring hydrophilic/lipophilicity of the surface functional group modification of crystalline nitrocellulose as well as that of a polymer composite using the hybrid nanocellulose (H-NC). For compatibility with petroleum-based polymers, the best tensile strength and transparency was found when the H-NC was reacted at pH 14 and 1 wt% compared with LDPE. From the test results, we found that it is possible to modify the surface functional groups of nanocellulose using a silane coupling agent. In addition, the high compatibility of nanocellulose with petroleum-based polymers is expected to help in reaching carbon neutrality by reducing the use of fossil fuels.

There has been an increasing number of studies on photovoltaic energy generation system in an offshore site with the largest energy generation efficiency, as increasing the researches and developments of renewable energies for use of offshore space and resources to replace existing fossil fuels and resolve environmental challenges. For installation and operation of floating photovoltaic systems in an offshore site with harsher environmental conditions, a stiffness of structural members comprising the total system must be reinforced to inland water spaces as dams, reservoirs etc., which have relatively weak condition. However, there are various limitations for the reinforcement of structural stiffness of the system, including producible size, total mass of the system, economic efficiency, etc. Thus, in this study, a floating breakwater is considered for reducing wave loads on the system and minimizing the reinforcement of the structural members. Wave reduction performances of floating breakwaters are evaluated, considering size and distance to the system. The wave loads on the system are evaluated using the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM), considering the multi-body effect of buoys. Stresses on structural members are assessed by coupled analyses using the finite element method (FEM), considering the wave loads and hydrodynamic characteristics. As the maximum stresses on each of the cases are reviewed and compared, the effect of floating breakwater for floating photovoltaic system is checked, and it is confirmed that the size of breakwater has a significant effect on structural responses of the system.
The objective of this study is to estimate the relationship between CO2 emissions and both nuclear power and renewable energy generation, and compare the cost efficiencies of nuclear power and renewable energy generation in reducing CO2 emissions in Korea. The results show that nuclear power and renewable energy generation should be increased by 1.344% and 7.874% to reduce CO2 emissions by 1%, respectively. Using the estimated coefficients and the levelized costs of electricity by source including the external costs, if the current amount of electricity generation is one megawatt-hour, the range of generation cost of nuclear power generation to reduce 1% CO2 emissions is $0.72~$1.49 depending on the level of external costs. In the case of renewable energy generation, the generation cost to reduce 1% CO2 emissions is $6.49. That is, to mitigate 1% of CO2 emissions at the total electricity generation of 353 million MWh in 2020 in Korea, the total generation costs range for nuclear power is $254 million~$526 million for the nuclear power, and the cost for renewable energy is $2.289 billion for renewable energy. Hence, we can conclude that, in Korea, nuclear power generation is more cost-efficient than renewable energy generation in mitigating CO2 emissions, even with the external costs of nuclear power generation.

Hydrogen energy is emerging as an alternative to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problems, and the use of hydrogen vehicles is increasing in the automobile industry as well. However, since hydrogen has a wide flammability limit of 4 to 75%, there is a high concern about safety in case of a hydrogen car accident. In particular, in semi-enclosed spaces such as tunnels and underground parking lots, a fire or explosion accompanied by hydrogen leakage is highly likely to cause a major accident. Therefore, it is necessary to review hydrogen safety through analysis of flammability areas caused by hydrogen leakage. Therefore, in this study, the effect of the air velocity in the tunnel on the flammability area was investigated by analyzing the hydrogen concentration according to the hydrogen leakage conditions of hydrogen vehicles and the air velocity in the tunnel in a road tunnel with standard section. Hydrogen leakage conditions were set as one tank leaking and three tanks leaking through the TPRD at the same time and a condition in which a large crack occurred and leaked. And the air velocity in the tunnel were considered 0, 1, 2.5, and 4.0 m/s. As a result of the analysis of the flammability area, it is shown that when the air velocity of 1 m/s or more exists, it is reduced by up to 25% compared to the case of air velocity of 0 m/s. But there is little effect of reducing the flammability area according to the increase of the wind speed. In particular, when a large crack occurs and completely leaks in about 2.5 seconds, the flammability area slightly increases as the air velocity increases. It was found that in the case of downward ejection, hydrogen gas remains under the vehicle for a considerably long time.

The perovskite solar cell is an active part of research in renewable energy fields such as solar energy, wind, hydroelectric power, marine energy, bioenergy, and hydrogen energy to replace fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas, which will gradually disappear as power demand increases due to the increase in use of the Internet of Things and Virtual environments due to the 4th industrial revolution. The perovskite solar cell is a solar cell device using an organic-inorganic hybrid material having a perovskite structure, and has advantages of replacing existing silicon solar cells with high efficiency, low cost solutions, and low temperature processes. In order to optimize the light absorption layer thin film predicted by the existing empirical method, reliability must be verified through device characteristics evaluation. However, since it costs a lot to evaluate the characteristics of the light-absorbing layer thin film device, the number of tests is limited. In order to solve this problem, the development and applicability of a clear and valid model using machine learning or artificial intelligence model as an auxiliary means for optimizing the light absorption layer thin film are considered infinite. In this study, to estimate the light absorption layer thin-film optimization of perovskite solar cells, the regression models of the support vector machine's linear kernel, R.B.F kernel, polynomial kernel, and sigmoid kernel were compared to verify the accuracy difference for each kernel function.

The aim of this study was to characterize the emission pathways and the footprint of greenhouse gases (GHG) in Daecheong Reservoir using the G-res Tool, and to evaluate the GHG emission intensity (EI) compared to other energy sources. In addition, the change in GHG emissions was assessed in response to the total phosphorus (TP) concentration. The GHG flux in post-impoundment was found to be 262 gCO2eq/m2/yr, of which CO2 and CH4 were 45.7% and 54.2%, respectively. Diffusion of CO2 contributed the most, followed by diffusion, degassing, and bubbling of CH4. The net GHG flux increased to 510 gCO2eq/m2/yr because the forest (as CO2 sink) was lost after dam construction. The EI of Daecheong Reservoir was 86.8 gCO2eq/kWh, which is 3.7 times higher than the global EI of hydroelectric power, due to its low power density. However, it was remarkable to highlight the value to be 9.5 times less than that of coal, a fossil fuel. We also found that a decrease in TP concentration in the reservoir leads to a decrease in GHG emissions. The results can be used to improve understanding of the GHG emission characteristics and to reduce uncertainty of the national GHG inventory of dam reservoirs.

Electrically powered airplanes can reduce CO2 emissions from fossil fuel use and reduce airplane costs in the long run through efficient energy use. For this reason, advanced aviation countries such as the United States and the European Union are leading the development of innovative technologies to implement the full-electric airplane in the future. Currently, the research and development to convert existing two-seater engine airplanes to electric-powered airplanes are underway domestically. The airplane converted to electric propulsion is the KLA-100, which aims to carry out a 30-minute flight test with a battery pack installed using the engine mounting space and copilot space. The lithium-ion battery installed on the airplane converted to electric propulsion was designed with a specific power of 150Wh/kg, weight of 200kg, and a C-rate 3~4. This study confirmed the possibility of a 30-minute flight with a designed battery pack before conducting a flight test of a modified electrically propelled airplane. The battery performance was verified by dividing the 30-minute flight profile into start/run stage, take-off stage, climbing stage, cruise stage, descending stage, and landing/run stage. The final target of the 30-minute flight was evaluated by calculating the battery capacity required for each stage. Furthermore, the flight performance of the electrically propelled airplane was determined by calculating the flight availability time and navigation distance according to the flight speed.

Atmospheric pollutant emissions, mainly exhaust gas emissions from vessels, and the resultant social costs of pollution in the Korean harbor cities of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang, Busan and Ulsan, are examined in this study, and the need for an emissions reduction plan is highlighted. Busan had several vessels entering its port, while Mokpo had few vessels, yet the vessels emission contribution was high in both the cities. Ulsan had world-class heavy-chemical industries, Gwangyang had steel mills and Incheon had a manufacturing industry and more vessels entering its port than Mokpo, yet the emission contribution was low in these cities. By calculating exhaust gas emissions from the vessels, it was found that CO2 was the highest, followed by NOx and SOx. By vessel type, Busan, Ulsan, and Incheon had more oil tank vessels, Gwangyang had more cargo vessels, and Mokpo had more ferries. As a result of social cost, Busan paid the highest, while the highest emission was PM. The use of low-sulfur oil can directly reduce PM and, SOx emissions and indirectly reduce NOx emissions. However, in order to reduce high CO2 emissions, only low-sulfur oil will not help. Therefore, the study suggested the need for reduction plan that use of fossil fuels, by using alternative maritime power (AMP).

As the issue of reducing greenhouse gases is emerging due to global warming and extreme weather, research on materials capable of radiative cooling without energy consumption is being actively conducted. Among them, silk is known as a natural self-cooling material, but in the conventional mixing process using chemically powdered silk, there is a problem that the radiative cooling effect disappears by the collapses of the intrinsic crystal structure of silk fibroin, so it is difficult to manufacture it in the form of a film or coating agent for radiative cooling. In this study, various types of membranes were manufactured using silk powder that went through a physical pulverization process that does not damage the intrinsic structure of silk fibroin, and the study was conducted to examine its applicability as a coating agent. Electrospun membranes and flat sheet membranes were prepared by using silk fibroin powder for this purpose, and it was observed that the viscosity of the solution had a significant effect on the membrane fabrication and its properties.
