Aso caldera volcano is located in central Kyushu, Japan which is one of the largest caldera volcanoes in the world. Nakadake crater is the only active central cone in Aso caldera. There was an explosive eruption on October 8, 2016, the eruption column height was 11 km, and fallout ash was found 300 km away from the volcano. In this study, we performed a numerical simulation to analyze the ash dispersion and the fallout tephra deposits during this eruption using Ash3D that was developed by the United States Geological Survey. The result showed that the ash would spread to the east and northeast, that could not affect the Korean peninsula, and the volcanic ash was deposited at a place from a distance of 400 km or more in the direction of east and northeast. The result was in close agreement with the identified ashfall deposits. Ash3D can be useful for quick forecast for the effects of hazards caused by volcanic ash.

In this paper, we propose an advanced hardware architecture for fast multi-resolution motion estimation of the video coding standard MPEG-1,2 and MPEG-4 AVC. We describe the algorithm and derive hardware architecture emphasizing the importance of area for low cost and fast operation by using the shared memory, the special ram architecture, the motion vector for 4 pixel x 4 pixel, the spiral search and so on. The proposed architecture has been verified by ARM-interfaced emulation board using Excalibur Altera FPGA and also by ASIC synthesis using Samsung 0.18 m CMOS cell library. The ASIC synthesis result shows that the proposed hardware can operate at 140 MHz, processing more than 1,100 QCIF video frames or 70 4CIF video frames per second. The hardware is going to be used as a core module when implementing a complete MPEG-4 AVC video encoder ASIC for real-time multimedia application.
Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the liquefaction potential of the land reclamation area in Incheon by using the ProShake program for long frequency Hachinohe seismic wave and short frequency Ofunato seismic waves to interpret ground response. Method: The interpretation results and the Modified Seed and Idriss method were used to evaluate the liquefaction potential. The liquefaction potential index which proposed by Iwasaki was calculated to be used as a guide line to represent the liquefaction evaluation results at the given location. The equivalent liquefaction factor of safety presented by Kang(1999) was used as a quantitative index to draw up the mapping of liquefaction potential. Results: This paper presents the mapping of liquefaction potential for the Incheon seaside reclamation area using both the liquefaction potential index and the equivalent liquefaction factor of safety. Conclution: As a result, the mapping of liquefaction based on the liquefaction potential index and equivalent liquefaction factor of safety shows similar distribution pattern.

The Hupo Basin, continental marginal basin, of the East Sea extends to Uljin-gun and Yeongdeok-gun. The Hupo Bank, a terrain that is higher than the surrounding seabed, is located at the eastern boundary of the Hupo Basin. KIOST(Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology) conducted detailed bathymetry surveys in the northern, central and southern areas of the Hupo Basin from 2011 to 2013. The Hupo Basin, bounded by steep slopes of the Hupo Bank, is deepened from the west coast to the east and deepest to a maximum depth of about 250 m. A narrow seafloor channel appears in the northern, central, and southern areas with the deepest depths. Numerous pockmarks appear on the seafloor at depths of about 150 ~ 250 m in all the three areas of the detailed bathymetry surveys. These pockmarks generally have diameters of about 20 to 50 m and depths of about 4 to 6 m, with craterlike submarine topography of various sizes. Seafloor sediments in the pockmark areas consist of fine silt. Comparing the shape and size of the pockmark of the Hupo Basin with that of other regions of the world, it is considered to be classified as a normal pockmark. There are about 7 pockmarks/1 ㎢ in the northern part of the three areas and about 8 pockmarks/1 ㎢ in the central part. The southern part has about 5 pockmarks/1 ㎢. If the area with the possibility of pockmarks is extended to the depth area of about 150 ~ 250 m in the entire Hupo Basin, the number of pockmarks is estimated to be more than about 4800. The pockmark of the Hupo Basin is more likely to be generated by a fluid such as a liquid than a gas. But it is necessary to scrutinize the cause and continuously monitor the pockmark.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and fermentation methods (C-I; fermented for 5 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$ after 2$0^{\circ}C$ fermentation for 2 days, C-II; fermented for 7 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$, M-I; kimchi with MSG fermented for 5 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$ after 2$0^{\circ}C$ fermentation for 2 days, M-II; kimchi with MSG fermented for 7 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$ on fermentation and free amino acid content. Fermentation of M-I and M-II was slightly delayed compared to C-I and C-II. Total microbe of C-I and C-IIwere lower than those of M-I and M-II, and lactic acid bacteria of C-I and C-II were lower than those of M-I and M-II respectively. The major free amino acids were alanine, asparagine, homocystine and valine in C-I, especially, glutamic acid and ornithine were high in C-II. Homocystine, alanine, asparagine and valine in M-I, glutamic acid, alanine, hydroxyproline, asparagine, homocystine, ornithine and valine were the major free amino acid in M-II, respectively. The sour taste of M-I and M-II was lower than those of C-I and C-II, respectively, and the effect of delaying fermentation at 1$0^{\circ}C$ did not showed in the C-I and M-I. The crispy taste of the M-I and M-II was higher than those of C-I and C-II, which was the opposite results of sour taste. Palatable and overall taste of M-I and M-II were higher than those of C-I and C-II, respectively These results suggest that the MSG in kimchi affect not only increment of free amino acid content but also shelf-life and taste improvement, and continuous fermentation at 1$0^{\circ}C$ also enhance the content of free amino acid and shelf-life of kimchi.
Jeju island is the biggest volcanic island in Korea and there are over 455 Quaternary monogenetic volcanoes, of which approximately 373 volcanoes(82.0%) are cinder cones. Other volcanic forms in the island include sharp-pointed lava cone without crater(9 volcanoes; 2.0%), shield volcanoes(27 volcanoes; 5.9%), tuff rings(17 volcanoes; 3.7%), tuff cones(3 volcanoes; 0.7%), a maar(1 volcano; 0.2%) and lava domes(25 volcanoes; 5.5%). The monogenetic volcanoes include 15 small nested cinder cones(aloreum). The monogenetic volcanoes are more abundant in the eastern part of the island than in the western part. If the main cause of the weathering such as precipitation affected the shape of the monogenetic volcanoes, more monogenetic volcanoes(BC, CC, DC, etc.) are supposed to be present in the southern part that have more precipitation than in the northern part. But the distribution of the monogenetic volcanoes shows no difference between the southern and the northern parts. So we suggest that the difference of the climatic conditions did not affect the distribution or the shape of cinder cones. Tuff rings, tuff cones and a maar are distributed beneath the island or in the low-altitude areas along the shore although cinder cones are distributed in the interior of the island. This means that the volcanic activity which formed the monogenetic volcanoes resulted from either phreatomagmatic eruption or magmatic (hawaiian or strombolian) eruptions depending on the reaction with water (underground water or shallow waters). The distribution of the monogenetic volcanoes according to the altitude shows that 253(55.6%) volcanoes occur in low-lying coastal areas at an altitude below 300 m, 110(24.2%) in a middle mountainous area at an altitude between 300~600 m and 92(20.2%) in a high mountainous area at an altitude above 600 m. So more than half of monogenetic volcanoes are distributed in low-lying coastal areas.
This article is for considering and looking through the meaning of Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) Hiku-ka of Kobayashi Issa before reviewing and adapting Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) in Eastern Asia. Issa wrote his works by using Hyanghwa-Gucheop in 1803, and he had adopted it as his creative works of Hikai absorbing Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) for about half a year. There has been no national study about this so far, and this study covered the aspects of Issa's adapting way of Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) in Japan and China. There have been several problems that the contents were limited to Guo-feng and there were no agreement of terminology as well among researchers. To overcome these limitations, therefore, this article aimed at all the works, rejected the view point as just a translation, and denominated this study as Haiku-ka. Above all, this study looked though Issa's Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) by splitting the aspects of Haiku-ka into borrowing topics and materials. In borrowing topics, the works with the topics of homesick and nostalgic parents stood out. Furthermore, annotations and understandings of Issa's original works were deeply involved. In borrowing materials, the original meanings in the works were transformed and changed or even reinterpreted by their own way. Eliminating sublime emotions, furious tone, and condemnation was main characteristic of Haiku-ka in Classic of Poetry(Shi jing). Besides, there were ways of exclusion of reasoning, deviating from the viewpoint of Sigyo(edification by poetry), not including moral senses. In other words, Issa used habits and impressions like the way of Haiku when he was doing Haiku-ka in Classic of Poetry(Shi jing). The meaning that Issa's Hiku-ka of Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) stood out compared to adaptation of Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) in Eastern Asia. Although Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) in Vietnam was transferred in the form of the poem in Vernacular, the meaning and contents were not changed. Moreover, the original works and characters in Joseon were not destroyed because Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) was not liberally translated but literally. However, Issa transferred the Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) in the form of the poem in Vernacular to reveal the value of popular ballads. This was a different adapting way of Classic of Poetry(Shi jing) from that in Eastern Asia.
This study presents a prediction of a time-series of the area inundated by effluent from Heavenly Lake caused by ground behavior prior to a volcanic eruption. A GIS-based hydrological algorithm that considers the multi-flow direction of effluent, the absorption and storage capacity of the ground soil, the storage volume of the basin or the depression terrain, was developed. To analyze the propagation pattern, four hypothetical collapse zones on the cheonji ground were set, considering the topographical characteristics and distributions of volcanic rocks at Mt. Baekdu. The results indicate that at 3 hours after collapse, for both scenarios 1 and 2 (collapses of the entire/southern boundary of cheonji), a flood hazard exists for villages in China, but not for those on the North Korean side of the mountain, due to the topographical characteristics of Mt. Baekdu. It is predicted that villages in both North Korea and China would be significantly damaged by flood inundation at 3 hours elapsed time for both scenarios 3 and 4 (collapses on the southern boundary of cheonji and on the southeastern-peak area).

This study was conducted into combustion characteristics and gases generated by the combustion of charcoal and agglomerated charcoal distributed in the domestic using a combustion chamber based on the average space per crater of a charcoal-grilled restaurant in South Korea. Each of the three types of charcoals and agglomerated wood charcoals was analyzed for fuel and combustion characteristics. In addition, the concentration changes of CO, CO2, NOx, and O2 were measured for 20 minutes depending on ventilation. As a result, CO yield without ventilation was measured in the range of 1390 to 4703 ppm, and CO yield with ventilation decreases about 29.8% to 57.4%. CO2 yield without ventilation was measured in the range of 1.34% to 2.42%, and CO2 yield was about 44.1% to 53.6% when the emission was more than about 1.5% at 10 minutes. The NOx yield was divided into two cases where the NOx yield was continuously increased because of incomplete combustion, emitted ranging from 29 ppm to 47 ppm, and where emission was constant after 1 minute in the range of 9 ppm to 18 ppm. The NOx yield with ventilation tends to be similar to the without ventilation, and NOx yield decreases up to 62.5%. Therefore, it could be used for health risk assessment with the simulation of the usage environment of charcoal and agglomerated wood charcoal.
