Re-examination of the vascular plants on Hongdo Island, Korea (홍도 관속식물상 재검토)

  • This study was carried out to survey the flora of Hongdo Island in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Specimens collected from previous Hongdo flora studies were reexamined using a relevant biodiversity database, and field surveys were carried out 22 times from April of 2003 to October of 2020. Based on the specimens collected during both previous studies and this study, the identified vascular plants of Hongdo consisted of 472 taxa comprising 102 families, 296 genera, 425 species, 6 subspecies, and 41 varieties. Among them, 111 taxa are newly recorded in this study, and 6 taxa are described in detail in terms of their morphological characteristics and habitat. Also, 29 taxa were reviewed or re-identified with corresponding taxonomic annotations. In Korea, Hongdo represents the northern distributional limit of the 4 taxa of Goodyera biflora, Damnacanthus major, Calanthe aristulifera, and Hemerocallis hongdoensis. Moreover, Hosta yingeri and Saussurea polylepis are endemic to Hongdo and nearby islands in Korea. Distribution maps of these species were prepared. Protected species designated by the Ministry of Environment were 7 taxa consisting of 2 taxa of level I, specifically Sedirea japonica and Neofinetia falcata, and 5 taxa of level II, which were Cymbidium macrorhizon, Woodwardia japonica, Dendrobium moniliforme, Calanthe aristulifera, and Bulbophyllum inconspicuum. Red list plants as designated by the National Institute of Biological Resources numbered 11 taxa. Naturalized plants numbered 40 taxa.

Mitigation effects of red Platycodon grandiflorum extract on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in splenocytes isolated from mice (홍도라지 추출물이 마우스에서 분리한 비장세포에서 lipopolysaccharide로 유도된 염증에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) is known to have effective antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The main bioactive components of PG are saponins, and these could contribute to anti-inflammatory activity. However, little is known about the anti-inflammatory effect of PG. In this study, we aim to assess the anti-inflammatory response to Red PG Extract (RPGE) in splenocytes under ex vivo conditions. Methods: The cell viability of isolated splenocytes taken from mice was analyzed by performing a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The productions of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines (specifically interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10)) were measured utilizing Griess reagent and ELISA, respectively. Results: We found that co-treatment with RPGE and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) decreased isolated splenocyte proliferation as compared with that of the LPS-stimulated control. We also observed that RPGE markedly suppressed NO synthesis and IL-6 production that was induced by LPS. There were no significant differences of IL-10 production between co-treatment with RPGE plus LPS and treatment with LPS alone. Conclusion: When taken together, our data has shown that RPGE mitigates LPS-induced inflammation in splenocytes isolated from mice. Further research is surely needed to confirm the anti-inflammation effects of RPGE in an in vivo model.

  • 대한기계설비단체총연합회가 창립 30주년을 맞아 정부로부터 매년 7월 16일을 '기계설비의 날'로 지정받음은 물론 지난 7월 15일 '제1회 기계설비의 날' 기념식을 성대히 치르면서 축제의 한마당을 펼쳤다. 대한기계설비단체총연합회는 기계설비분야의 당면과제 해결 및 업계의 건전한 발전과 단결을 도모하고 기술개발을 촉진하기 위해 지난 1986년 설립되었다. 한일엠이씨 최상홍 회장은 총연합회 설립을 주도하였고 초대, 2대 회장까지 맡아서 기계설비업계의 단합과 발전을 이끌었다. 기계설비업계에서 그는 "온 몸으로 실천하는 작은 거인", "기술향상에 뜻을 둔 선각자이며 기술보국에 앞장선 거보(巨寶)", "위트 있는 분위기 메이커", "원리원칙과 의로움을 중요시 하는 멋쟁이", "철두철미한 메모광", "기계설비업계의 대부" 등으로 불리운다. 우리나라에 '기계설비'라는 단어 자체가 생소했던 1950년대, 척박한 환경의 기계설비에 입문하여 오늘날 최첨단 기계설비산업으로 거듭나기까지 최상홍 회장은 기계설비 발전을 이끌었을 뿐만 아니라 많은 후배들을 배출해냈다. 또한 대한기계설비건설협회를 비롯하여 대한설비공학회, 냉동공조산업협회, 한국설비기술협회, 대한기계설비단체총연합회 등 업계 및 학계에 그의 손길이 미치지 않은 곳이 없을 정도로 족적은 거대하다. 지난 8월호부터 연재된 최상홍 회장의 기계설비 인생 60년을 이번호를 끝으로 마친다.

  • 최근 기상이변에 따른 이상홍수가 빈번하고, 댐 설계홍수량 설계기준이 가능최대홍수량(PMF)으로 강화되었으며, 최근의 주요 호우사상을 고려하여 산정한 임하댐 유역의 가능최대강수량(P.M.P)이 설계 당시보다 증가됨에 따라 가능최대홍수량(PMF) 유입시 댐 안정성 확보가 필요한 것으로 검토되었다. 따라서, 본 과업은 “댐의 수문학적 안정성검토 및 치수능력증대 기본계획 수립, 2004. 9. 건설교통부/한국수자원공사”에 의거하여, 최근의 태풍 ‘RUSA’(’02) 및 ‘MAEMI’(’03)와 같은 이상호우에 대한 댐 및 여수로의 안정성을 확보함으로써 국민의 생명과 재산을 보호할 수 있도록 비상여수로를 계획하였다. 비상여수로는 수문학적 안정성을 검토한 후, 가능최대홍수량(PMF)과 같은 홍수유입시 댐의 안전을 위하여 신속히 홍수를 배제시킬 수 있는 수리적.구조적인 안정성 확보가 가능하고, 시공성, 경제성 및 환경성 측면을 고려하여 댐우안 300m 지점에 터널규모 D15m${\times}$3련 ${\times}$L1,262m (L1=379m, L2=421m, L3=462m)의 월류형 터널식으로 계획하였다.

Protective Effect of Rhodiola sachalinensis A. Bor on Excessive Exercise Stress (홍경천의 과도한 운동스트레스에 대한 방어효과)

  • Rhodiola sachalinensis A. Bor is a plant naturally grows in a high mountain areas. Aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of R.sachalinensis A. Bor extract against excessive exercise induced stress. R.sachalinensis A. Bor extract significantly inhibited L6 muscle cell death and ATP reduction caused by $H_2O_2$ damage. In addition, the oral administration of R. sachalinensis A. Bor extract in mice improved the 43.9% of treadmill running time and blood profiles of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatinine, lactate when compared to distilled water. These results suggested that R. sachalinensis A. Bor can attenuate excessive exercise induced damage.

Pinus densiflora S. et Z. Population in Hong-do Island in Korea (홍도(紅島)의 적송집단(赤松集團))

  • Pine forests existing in Hong-do island were examined as regarding such characteristics, tree form, needle length, branch diameter, bark colors, ratio of summer wood to springwood, location and number of resin canal and other measurements. Hong-do island, located the furthest west part of Korea, suports only Pinus densiflora but very few Pinus thunbergii, in fact the present authors could not find any black pine individuals at all through investigation. Checking 14 individual trees of red pine, more than age of 20, of the genetic contamination by black pine, in a certain degree, exist. Here, a very dense foliage type and a very sparse foliage type tree of red pine growing nearby was examined and the unique fact was that each of those type has only one (average number 1.3) accessory resin canal, while other trees have three as minimum or more. The present authors thought this island had not been covered by any Pinus thunbergii but by Pinus densiflora. It was thought that Pinus thunbergii stands grown along the sea-coast of Korean Peninsula are pollen donors to this island.

A systematic study of Dryopteris subg. Erythrovariae (H. Itô) Fraser-Jenk. (Dryopteridaceae) in Korea (한반도산 관중속 홍지네족제비고사리아속(관중과)의 분류학적 연구)

  • The taxa of Dryopteris subg. Erythrovariae are variable in morphology, resulting in taxonomic confusion in delimiting taxon boundaries. We examined the morphological characteristics of the Korean members of subg. Erythrovariae to clarify their taxonomic identities and relationships. The shapes of the blades, pinnae, and pinnule apices, the shapes and colors of the scales, and the positions of sori were useful for delimiting the Korean taxa of the subgenus. Based on the results of this study and evidence from previous studies, 13 taxa comprising 12 species and one variety of Dryopteris subg. Erythrovariae were recognized in Korea. Descriptions of all Korean taxa of the subg. Erythrovariae and a key to the species are provided. The descriptions presented here are based on field observations and the examination of some 1,000 specimens from the major herbaria of the world.

Quality and Preference Changes Red Sea Cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) Kimchi during Storage Period (홍해삼 첨가 김치의 저장기간 중 품질 특성 및 기호도 변화)

  • To diversify usage of aquacultural red sea cucumber, new Kimchi containing red sea cucumber was developed and its quality and consumer preference were studied. The pH and total acidity, index of Kimchi ripening, decreased till 7 days of storage, then pH change became blunt and finally reached optimum pH 4-4.5. The amount of reducing sugar gradually decreased during storage period. The number of lactic acid bacteria increased in early fermentation period in both Kimchi containing boiled and fresh red sea cucumber, however, more lactic acid bacteria found in fresh red sea cucumber containing Kimchi. Preference of Kimchi containing boiled or fresh red sea cucumber compared to control Kimchi containing fermented salted fish was evaluated. The results revealed there were no differences in color, flavor, texture, taste, after taste and overall preference.

Changes in β-Carotene, Vitamin E, and Folate Compositions and Retention Rates of Pepper and Paprika by Color and Cooking Method (고추와 파프리카의 색과 조리방법의 차이에 따른 베타카로틴, 비타민 E, 엽산의 함량과 잔존율)

  • ${\beta}-Carotene$, vitamin E, and folate contents according to color and species of Capsicum annuum were investigated. In addition, four C. annuum species were cooked by using different methods (boiling, pan-cooking, pan-frying, deep-frying, steaming, roasting, and microwaving), and retention rates of ${\beta}-Carotene$, vitamin E, and folate affected by color and species were evaluated. Weight loss was observed in all paprika and pepper species using all cooking methods. ${\beta}-Carotene$ and folate contents of C. annuum samples were significantly different by color, species, and cooking method (P<0.05), whereas vitamin E contents were not significantly affected by species. ${\beta}-Carotene$, vitamin E, and folate contents (mg/100 g) of raw C. annuum showed ranges of 95.4 (green pepper)~2,441.1 (red pepper), 0.7 (green paprika)~4.2 (red paprika), and 6.2 (green pepper)~148.7 (red pepper). As a result, the highest ${\beta}-Carotene$, vitamin E, and folate contents were detected in deep fried red pepper, roasted red pepper, and boiled red pepper, respectively, among the cooked samples. Retention rates of C. annuum varied by cooking method, resulting in ranges of 77.3% (boiled red pepper)~356.4% (roasted green pepper) for ${\beta}-Carotene$, 2.0% (microwaved red pepper)~789.3% (deep-fried green paprika) for vitamin E, and 20.9% (microwaved red pepper)~445.1% (steamed green pepper) for folate. Over 75% retention rates were observed for ${\beta}-Carotene$, vitamin E, and folate in all samples except for red pepper. However, in red pepper, vitamin E and folate retentions were remarkably lowered by deep frying and micro-waving, resulting in rates of 2.0~32.1%. This study provides information on effective cooking methods for vitamin retention in C. annuum depending on color and species.

Effect of White and Blue Wind Net Shading on the Quality of 'Fuji' and 'Hongro' Apple Fruits (백색 및 청색 방풍망 차광 처리가 '후지', '홍로' 사과 과실의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In Yesan-gun, Korea's main apple-producing region, the area of apple cultivation and yield are declining. In particular, the worsening quality of fruits due to unusually high temperatures amid recent climate change has also become a major challenge for apple orchards located on flatlands. The objective of this research is to investigate quality changes of apples according to different growing environments, depending on the shade of the sun, by covering the trees with different colors of wind nets. A white and blue wind nets with a hole size of 2 × 2 mm is installed on two experimental trees, 17-year-old 'Fuji' and 'Hongro', which are planted 1.5 m × 3.5 m in the north-south direction. Treatment of wind nets effectively lowered fruit surface temperature regardless of apple variety. When measuring the temperature of the fruit surface at 2 pm, the temperature of the air was 34.8℃, but the 'Fuji' of the untreated blocks was the highest at 40.0℃, while the blue wind net and the white wind net were significantly lower at 34.9℃ and 36.6℃, respectively. In 'Hongro', the results showed that the surface temperature was effectively lowered by recording 38.3℃ for the blue wind net and 38.5℃ for the white wind net treatment when the untreated one was 44.2℃. According to the color difference in 'Fuji', the skin redness (a) was the lowest with untreated control at 16.5, but the blue and white wind net treatment higher at 18.0 and 19.3, respectively. In 'Hongro', the white wind net treated fruit also showed a much higher skin redness than the untreated control of 28.1, showing much higher a of 34.9. Sunburn damage in 'Fuji' apples amounted to 9.4% in untreated control. However, the blue and white wind net treatment revealed to 3.8% and 4.2%, respectively. In 'Hongro', those damage in the fruits treated with blue or white wind net, accounted for only 8.8% and 12.4%, respectively, significantly lower than 28.8% occurrence of untreated one. And, these results were understood to be the result of low UV radiation being blocked by the treatment of wind nets.
