Simulation of Bi-dispersed Electrorheological Fluids of Different Particle Sizes by the Extended Maxwell-Wagner Polarization Model (확장된 Maxwell-Wagner 분극 모델에 의한 서로 크기가 다른 입자들로 구성된 이성분계 전기유변 유체의 전산 모사)

  • The extended Maxwell-Wagner polarization model is employed to describe the ER(Electrorheological) behavior of bi-dispersed ER suspensions, and solutions to the equation of motion are obtained by dynamic simulation. Under the same particle volume fraction, it is found that the dynamic yield stresses of uniform size suspensions do not depend on the particle size. Compared with uniform size suspensions, the dynamic yield stress is reduced for ER fluids consisting of two kinds of particles with different sizes. Compared with the dynamic yield stress behavior, for ${\dot{\gamma}}^*$≧0.01 the shear stress shows different behaviors depending on the particle sizes and the raio of different size particles. The simulation results show the nonlinear ER behavior (∆𝛕 ∝ En, n ≈ 1.55) of the conducting particle ER suspensions.

Evaluation of the Effect of Nickel Powder on the Piezoresistivity Behavior of Carbon-Fiber/Rubber Composites (탄소섬유/고무 복합재료의 압저항과 니켈입자의 영향)

  • In this study, we measure the initial electrical conductivity of SCF/rubber specimens and SCF/rubber specimens with nickel particles respectively. The corresponding electrical conductivity with compressive strain on the specimens is also measured. Through this experiment, we observed the effects of the volume fraction of carbon fiber, nickel particles and external strain on the electrical conductivity. Experiments show that even a small difference in the volume fraction of SCF plays a major role in the change of the electrical conductivity and that the piezoresistivity increases due to fiber reorientation respond to external strain. In addition, the nickel particles contribute to improving the electrical conductivity in specimens with carbon fibers above the threshold volume fraction. It was confirmed that there is an effect of offsetting the increment in the piezoresistivity caused by the reorientation of carbon fibers according to external strain.

A Study on Effect of n-heptane Mixing on PAH and Soot Formation in Counterflow Ethylene Diffusion Flames (대향류 에틸렌 확산화염내 PAH 및 매연의 생성에 미치는 n-헵탄 혼합의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In order to investigate the effect of n-heptane mixing on PAH and soot formation, small amount of n-heptane has been mixed in counterflow ethylene diffusion flame. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) concentration, respectively. Results showed that the mixing of n-heptane in ethylene diffusion flame produces more PAHs and soot than those of pure ethylene flame. However, signals of LIF for 20% n-heptane mixture flame were lower than that of pure ethylene flame. It can be considered that the enhancement of PAH and soot formation by the n-heptane mixing of ethylene can be explained by methyl($CH_3$) radical in the low temperature region. And it can be found that reaction rate of H radical for 10% n-heptane plays a crucial role for benzene formation.

Effect of Temperature on Sintering Properties in Zirconia Fabricated by Plasma Activated Sintering (Plasma Activated Sintering법으로 제조된 지르코니아의 소결특성에 미치는 온도의 영향)

  • 상압 소결법과 통전활성 소결(Plasma Activated Sintering; PAS)법으로 120$0^{\circ}C$부터 150$0^{\circ}C$의 온도범위에서 제조된 지르코니아의 기계적 특성을 ring on ring disk 굽힘시험으로 비교하여 고찰하였다. 모든 소결온도범위에서 PAS법으로 제조된 소결체의 밀도와 경도는 상압 소결법에 의해 제조된 소결체 보다 높게 나타났다. 결정립의 크기는 두 소결법에 의해 제조된 소결체 모두에서 소결온도 증가에 따라 증가하였으나, PAS법으로 제조된 소결체가 상압 소결법으로 제조된 소결체 보다는 결정립 성장이 억제되었다. 파괴인성은 PAS법으로 제조된 소결체의 경우 130$0^{\circ}C$에서 최고값을 나타낸 후 소결온도 증가에 따라 미세하게 감소하였으며, 상압 소결법으로 제조된 소결체의 경우 소결온도 증가에 따라 증가되었다. 소결체의 상분율 변화는 PAS법으로 제조된 경우 전 온도범위 (1200~150$0^{\circ}C$)에서 정방정상만 관찰되었으며, 상압 소결법의 경우 단사정상과 정방정상의 혼합상을 나타내었고, 소결온도 증가에 따라 정방정상의 비율이 증가하였다. 결과적으로 PAS법의 경우 지르코니아의 최적 소결온도는 130$0^{\circ}C$이며, 상압 소결법의 경우 150$0^{\circ}C$임을 알 수 있었으며, 소결체의 파괴인성에 미치는 영향은 결정립 크기 및 정방정상의 분율임을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • The axisymmetric methane-air counterflow flame in microgravity was simulated to investigate effects of the global strain rate on the flame structure. The flame shapes and profiles of temperature and the axial velocity for the mole fraction of methane in the methane-nitrogen fuel stream, Xm= 20, 50, $80\%$, and the global strain rate, ag= 20, 60, 90 $s^{-1}$ each mole fraction were compared. The profiles of the temperature and axial velocity of the axisymmetric simulations were in good agreement with those of OPPDIF, an one-dimensional flamelet code. It was confirmed that the flame is stretched more and the flame radius increases and the flame thickness decreases as the global strain rate increases.

Strengthening Mechanism of Hybrid Short Fiber/Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites (섬유/입자 혼합 금속복합재료의 강화기구 해석)

  • This paper presents an analytical method considering tensile strength enhancement in hybrid $Al_2O_3$ fiber/particle/aluminum composites(MMCs). The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid MMCs are even 20% higher than those of the fiber reinforced MMCs with same volume fraction of reinforcements. This phenomenon is explained by the cluster model which is newly proposed in this research, and the strengthening mechanisms by a cluster is analyzed using simple modified rule of mixtures. From the analysis, it is observed that cluster structure in hybrid MMCs increase the fiber efficiency factor for the tensile strength and the orientation factor for the elastic modulus. The present theory is then compared with experimental results which was performed using squeeze infiltrated hybrid MMCs made of hybrid $Al_2O_3$ short fiber/particle preform and AC8A alloy as base metal, and the agreement is found to be satisfactory.

  • A steady transonic dilute premixed combustion in a diverging channel is investigated by using asymptotic analysis. This model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow is described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. Also the asymptotic analysis reveals the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The results show the complicated nonlinear interaction between the convection, reaction, and geometry effects and its effect on the flow behavior.

Species Transport Mechanisnn and Flame Structure of Counterflow Nonpremixed Flame Perturbed by a Vortex (와동에 의해 교란된 대향류 비예혼합화염의 화학종 전달기구 및 화염구조)

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$/$N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this computation. The results showed that an initially flat stagnation plane, on which an axial velocity was zero, was deformed into a complex-shaped plane, and an initial stagnation point was moved far away from a vortex head when the counterflow field was perturbed by the vortex. It was noted that the movement of stagnation point could alter the species transport mechanism to the flame surface. It was also identified that the altered species transport mechanism affected the distributions of the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation rate.

Characteristics of Carbidization for Iron Ore Fines with a Wide Size Range (입도분포가 넓은 분철광석의 탄화특성)

  • Characteristics of reduction and carbidization for hematite ore with a wide size range have been investigated at high temperature(590∼64$0^{\circ}C$) under $H_2$ and $H_2$-CO gas mixtures. The apparent activation energy for reduction of hematite ore with H2 gas was found to be 20 kJ/mol. The weight loss by reduction was about 28% md the weight gain by carbidization was about 5%. The measured values of weight change were compared with those calculated from equation (3) & (5) and fairly good agreement was obtained. The rate of carbidization was increased with an decrease in temperature, particle diameter and gas ratio($H_2$/ CO). The free carbon was increased with decrease in gas ratio($H_2$/ CO). The rate of carbidization was increased with mixing of $H_2$ gas but this effect was not proportional to fraction of $H_2$ gas. It was also found that the rate of carbidization was the maximum in the $H_2$ gas fraction of 0.5. It is considered that $H_2$ plays a part as a catalyst for formation of iron carbide($Fe_3$C).

Mixed Micellar Properties of DPC with Other Cationic Surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CDEAB) (DPC와 다른 양이온성 계면활성제(DTAB, TTAB 및 CDEAB)와의 혼합마이셀화에 관한 연구)

  • The critical micelle concentration $(CMC^{\ast})$ and the counterion binding constant (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB) were determined at $25^{\circ}C$ as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall molc fraction of DPC) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters $(X_{i},\;{\gamma}_{I},\;C_{i},\;a^{M}_{i}, \beta,\;{\Delta}H_{mix}, \;and\; {\Delta}G^{o}_{m})$ for the micellization of DPC/DTAB, DPC/TTAB, and DPC/CDEAB mixtures were calculated and analyzed for each system by means of the equations derived from the pseudophase separation model. The results show that the DPC/DTAB mixed system has the greatest deviation and the DPC/CDEAB mixed system has the smallest deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model.
