Polymer membranes such as poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)-polyetherimide (PTMSP-PEI) and poly(dimethylsiloxane)- polyetherimide (PDMS-PEI) composite membrane were prepared by solution casting method. To investigate the characteristics of these membranes, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, $^1H-NMR,$ DSC, TGA, GPC, and SEM have been utilized. The number-average (equation omitted) and weight-average (equation omitted) molecular weight of PTMSP were 477,920 and 673,329 respectively. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of PTMSP was $224^{\circ}C.$ The separation of the gas mixture ($H_2/N_2$) through the composite membranes were studied as a function of pressure. The separation factor (${\alpha}, {\beta},$ quation omitted) of the composite membranes used in this work increased as the pressure of permeation cell increased. The real separation factor (${\alpha}$), head separation factor (${\beta}$), and tail separation factor (equation omitted) of PTMSP-PEI composite membrane were 2.28, 1.17, and 1.96 respectively at ${\Delta}P$ 30psi and $25^{\circ}C.$ (${\alpha}, {\beta}$ and equation omitted of PDMS-PEI composite membrane were 3.70, 1.53, and 2.42 respectively at ${\Delta}P$ 30psi and $25^{\circ}C$.
Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/sulfur-siccinic acid(SSA) membrane performances have been studied for the vapor permeation separation of methyl tort-butyl ether(MTBE)/methanol mixtures with varying operation temperatures, amount of cross-linking agents, and feed compositions. 1'here are two factors, the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding, in the swelling measurements of PVA/SSA membranes. These two factors act interdependently on the membrane swelling. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The cross-linking effect might be more dominant than the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 7% SSA membrane. Hydrogen bonding effect was more important for 5% SSA membrane. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vapor feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2187 with the flux of 4.84g/$m^2$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 3$0^{\circ}C$.
In this study, a PEBAX/PVDF composite membrane was fabricated, and its pervaporation performance was tested in an ethanol/water mixture. In addition, we attempted to improve the pervaporation performance of the composite membrane by forming a ZIF-8 layer on the surface of the PVDF substrate. The thickness of selective layer was optimized by comparing the pervaporation performance depending on the PEBAX thickness. A pervaporation test was performed on the Ethanol/Water mixture. As a result, the composite membrane using PVDF substrate with ZIF-8 layer had a flux of 1.98 kg/m2h and separation factor of 3.88, showing higher values of both permeation flux and selectivity than the composite membrane using bare PVDF substrate.
The advancement of commercially viable gas separation membranes plays a pivotal role in improving CO2 separation efficiency. High-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide) (high-Mw PEO) emerges as a promising option due to its high CO2 solubility, affordability, and robust mechanical attributes. However, the crystalline nature of high-Mw PEO hinders its application in gas separation membranes. This study proposes a straightforward blending approach by incorporating various polymeric additives into high-Mw PEO to address this challenge. Four commercially available, water-soluble polymers, i.e. poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) are examined as additives to enhance membrane performance by improving miscibility and reducing PEO crystallinity. Contrary to expectations, PEG and PPG fail to inhibit the crystalline structure of PEO and result in membrane flaws. Conversely, PAA and PVP demonstrate greater success in altering the crystal structure of PEO, yielding defect-free membranes. A thorough investigation delves into the correlation between changes in the crystalline structure of high-Mw PEO blend membranes and their gas separation performance. Drawing from our findings and previously documented outcomes, we offer insights into designing and selecting additive polymers for high-Mw PEO, aiming at the creation of cost-effective, commercially viable CO2 separation membranes.

The gas separation performance of a mixed membrane structure based on a mixture of polyethersulfone (PES) and cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin-benzylimidazole (CoTpp-BIm) as an oxygen carrier was investigated. The CoTpp-BIm mixed PES membrane had an asymmetric structure with a mixture of finger structure and sponge-like structure, and the upper surface was dense. The gas separation performance test was carried out using $94%\;N_2$ gas and $6%\;O_2$ mixed gas. Oxygen and nitrogen permeability coefficients were measured at ${\Delta}P$ ranging from 15 to 228 cmHg and the permeate side of the PES membrane was maintained at vacuum level. The oxygen permeability coefficient of CoTpp-BIm mixed PES membranes increased as supplied pressure was decreased. When the supply pressure was 15 cmHg, the gas permeability ($P_{O_2}$) was 6676 Barrer, the $O_2/N_2$ selectivity (${\alpha}$) was 6.1, and the promoting factor (F) was 2.39. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the addition of CoTpp-BIm to the PES film improved the oxygen separation characteristics.
In this study, mixed matrix membranes were prepared by mixing the synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 (ZIF-7) with poly(ether-b-amide) 2533 (PEBAX2533). A single gas (N2, CO2) was permeated through the membrane to investigate the properties of the gas. Through FT-IR, XRD, and FE-SEM, the peaks and shapes of ZIF-7 were confirmed, and it was determined that the synthesis was successful. Through TGA, it was confirmed that ZIF-7 has excellent thermal stability and that when incorporated into the membrane, the thermal stability is improved compared to pure PEBAX2533. It was found that ZIF-7 synthesized through BET had excellent CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity showed a high value of about 49.64. For the gas permeation, as the ZIF-7 content in the mixed membrane increases, the N2 permeability decreases and the CO2 permeability slightly decreases, while the CO2/N2 selectivity steadily increases. In particular, when 20 wt% of ZIF-7 was added, the CO2 permeability did not decrease significantly and the CO2/N2 selectivity increased considerably, resulting in the performance approaching to the Robeson upper-bound.
