Extending shelf-life of Oriental Melon(Cucumis melo L.) by Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MA 포장기법에 의한 참외의 신선도 유지)

  • Modified atmosphere packaging was applied to oriental melon(Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Mak.) to extend its freshness during distribution. Gas composition and ethylene content in the film bags changed rapidly at the early stage of storage. Within 10 days, weight loss of the unpackaged increased upto 7.68% while those of the packaged remained less than 1.0% except LDPE film modified by addition of 5%(w/w) zeolite with $20\;{\mu}m$ thickness(20CK, 2.38%). Firmness was effectively maintained in the LDPE film modified by addition of 5%(w/w) zeolite with $40\;{\mu}m$ thickness(40CK) and the LDPE film with $40\;{\mu}m$ thickness containing ethylene absorber sachet(40LP). Peel color of the fruit changed rapidly in control and a little in 40CK. Oriental melon packages using 40CK provided better visual and sensory quality retention compared with others. Results suggested that packaging treatment such as 40CK could be used for extending freshness of oriental melon during transport period at ambient temperature.

A Clinical Evaluation of Tuberculous Pleurisy -Report of 52 Cases (결핵성 흉막염 환자의 임상적 고찰)

  • A clinical analysis was performed on 52 cases of tuberculous pleurisy experienced in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and department of medicine, Chosun University Hospital during a period from Jan. 1994 to Dec. 1995. Among them, male was 39 cases, female was 13 cases, with age ranged from 7 to 73 years. The common symptoms were chest pain 75%, dyspnea 59.6%, cough 55.8%. The most common diagnostic tool was pleural biopsy. The protein levels in the tuberculous pleural effusion were 0.9∼6.5 gmojo, and ratios of effusion protein to serum protein were 0.48 ∼ 1.06. The glucose levels in the tuberculous pleural effusion were 37∼ 112 mg%. The LDH levels in the tuberculous pleural effusion were 80 ∼ 2440 unitlml, and ratios of tuberculous p eural effusion LDH to serum LDH were 0.48 ∼ 1.03. The ADA levels in the tuberculous pleural effusion were 24-63 lU/L. The common surgical methods of treatment in the tuberculous pleurisy were closed thoracostomy in 18 cases(66.7%), and thoracentesis in 5 cases(18.5%). This study compares the clinical results of group A and group B. There were no significant differences for age and sex, lag period from initial symptoms to admission, diagnostic method, and protein, pH, LDH, glucose, ADA levels in tuberculous pleural effusion. Authors noted that the discharge after admission on the tuberculous pleurisy was more faster in patients with surgical treatment than in patients with only medical treatment.   • Clinical Observation was made on 37 cases of Endotracheal intubation patients in the ICU of Oriental Medical Hosptal of Tae- Jon University from January in 1992 to June in 1995. 1. There were many cases of Endotracheal intubation in ischemic attack hemorragic in order. 2. Cerebral embolism mostly occured in the MCA territory and cerebral thrombosis, ICH, in the pons, generally. 3. On admission the consciousness of the most patients was 3 to 7 point by GCS. 4. The ordinary preceeding disease was hypertension. 5. Most patients were discharged from ICU after 2 days. 5. Most patients were discharged from ICU after 2 days. 6. Endotracheal intubation was done most frequently from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and intubated time was less than 2 hours. 7. Endotracheal intubation was done in case of heart arrest than dyspnea cases. 8. The main complication of patients of C.V.A. in ICU were urinary tract infection, pneumonia in order. 9. There were no side effects after and by Endotracheal intubation.

Changes in Major Components of Japanese Apricot during Ripening (매실의 성숙중 주요성분의 변화)

  • In order to determine optimal conditions for the preparation of Japanese apricot wine, the changes in major components were experimented during ripening. A weight was $18.3{\pm}2.57\;g$ at June 22 or so. Moisture was reached $92.1{\pm}0.17\;%$ at that time. Respiration amounts were decreased by degrees during the ripening of Japanese apricot but came near climacteric maximum state about June 22. pH was decreased from $2.76{\pm}0.025$ to $2.51{\pm}0.081$, titratible acidity was increased from $1.15%{\pm}0.083%$ to $1.39{\pm}0.061%$. Fe was detected most of all and Zn, Mg, Cu and Ca were checked by the next order in mineral contents. And the rate of mineral contents was decreasing phenomenon slightly with ripening. Total sugar, about June 8, was higher than any other time with $1.74{\pm}0.090%$ and reducing sugar was increased with similarly a tendency of total sugar. Malic and citric acid were much of organic acids. The content of malic acid was decreased greatly but ctric acid was increased during ripening.

  • In this study, we selected 6 vegetation sites (reed community) and 6 non-vegetation sites (tidal flat) in the Muan tidal flat of Hampyeong Bay, and observed seasonal changes in carbon dioxide concentration, flux and soil temperature at low tide conditions. The study was conducted to identify the characteristics of seasonal changes in vegetation and non-vegetation areas through the data observed in May 30, August 8, 2012 and January 31, 2013. The average carbon dioxide concentration in the vegetation area was the highest in winter, followed by spring and summer, and the non-vegetation area showed the same concentration change as the vegetation area. The carbon dioxide flux in the vegetation area showed a positive (+) value in both spring and summer, but it was negative (-) in the winter. The average value of carbon dioxide flux was the highest in spring, but it was almost similar to summer, and winter was the lowest negative value. Non-vegetation areas showed positive emission in spring, and negative uptake in summer and winter; mean values were the highest in spring, and the difference between summer and winter was small. In summary of seasonal change characteristics of the research area, the emission of carbon dioxide was dominant in both areas in spring. In summer, carbon dioxide emission was dominant in the vegetation area, and the non-vegetation area was observed to uptake by photosynthesis of phytoplankton, but it was very small. In winter, changes in flux in both areas were very slight.

Studies on CA Storage of Fresh Ginseng (수삼(水蔘)의 CA저장(貯藏)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The effect of CA storage on the fresh ginseng roots were investigated. The quality of red ginseng prepared from the roots of CA storages were also evaluated and following results were abtained. 1. Fresh ginseng roots stored at controlled atmosphere showed normal appearances for as long as 6 months, while they were contaminated with fungi in 3 months when stored in the refrigerator. 2. The weights of fresh ginseng roots were reduced for 180 days to 9% and $4{\sim}5%$ in cold storage and CA storage, respectively. Those of CA storage were higher than cold storage in their hardness. 3. Bitterness of the fresh ginseng root was generally decreased as it was stored long. The decrease in bitterness of CA group was less than cold-storage group. 4. Respiration of CA group was lower than that of cold-storage group for whole storage periods. 5. Red ginseng perpared from the fresh roots stored for 180 days was incomplete in gelation and its husk was easily detached. 6. Total saponins of the red ginseng made from the fresh ginseng of CA storage was greatly reduced as compared to that prepared commonly.

Effect of CO2 and ClO2 gas Pre-treatment for Maintain Shelf-life of Summer Strawberries (사계성 딸기의 신선도 유지를 위한 CO2와 ClO2가스의 전처리 효과)

  • This study was conducted to maintain the postharvest shelf-life of summer strawberry cultivars 'Goha' and 'Flamengo' through $CO_2$ (90%) and $ClO_2$ gas ($5{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$) pre-treatment. The respiration rate of 'Goha' and 'Flamengo' treated with $CO_2$ and $CO_2$ + $ClO_2$ was the lowest during storage. The weight loss with $CO_2$ + $ClO_2$ treatment was about 1% lower than the control group and 'Goha' was the lowest during storage. The pre-treatments effect on soluble solids contents was minimized. The firmness with $CO_2$ and $CO_2$ + $ClO_2$ treatments was only about 30% higher than $ClO_2$ and control. The firmness of 'Goha' was about 2.15N and 'Flamengo' was 2.37N, 15 days after storage. Decayed fruit was shown from after 6 days after storage in control. Control group lost quality 10 days after storage due to decayed fruit rate 20% of 'Goha' and 'Flamengo'. $CO_2$ and $CO_2$ + $ClO_2$ treatments showed the lowest decay rate during storage. Especially, 'Goha' showed around 5% decay fruit rate 10 days after storage. As a result, $CO_2$ + $ClO_2$ pre-treatment is recommended to extend the shelf-life of the summer strawberries.

A Study on the Characteristics of Bad Breath in Office Workers According to Mask Selection (마스크 선택에 따른 직장인의 구취 관련 특성 연구)

  • This study was to investigate whether there are differences in subjective bad breath-related characteristics and psychological characteristics of sports masks printed with natural minerals compared with quarantine masks and cotton masks. The study subjects were divided into 30 people in the Sports Mask Group, 30 people in the KF Mask Group (KMG), and 30 people in the cotton mask group (CMG), and a total of 90 subjects participated in the study. It was randomly sent to use 1 mask per day and 3 masks for 3 days. The study period was conducted from October 15, 2020 to October 30, 2020. As a result of the study, there was no difference in the use of masks between the three groups in terms of bad breath health and dry mouth. However, the sports mask was superior to other masks in oral respiration and bad breath angle. As a result of analyzing psychological factors, there was no difference between the 3 groups for depression. However, in the stress factor, sports masks were superior to other masks in stress. The results of this study are valuable as suggesting the direction of use of functional masks, and we hope that they will be used as basic data for functional mask research to be studied in the future.

Evaluation of the Fruit Quality Indices during Maturation and Ripening and the Influence of Short-term Temperature Management on Shelf-life during Simulated Exportation in 'Changjo' Pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) (배 신품종 '창조'의 성숙 중 품질 요인 변화 및 수송온도 환경에 따른 반응성)

  • In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Changjo', developed from a cross between 'Tama' and '81-1-27' ('Danbae' ${\times}$ 'Okusankichi') in 1995 and named in 2009, to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the market quality and broaden the cultivation area. The fruits of 'Changjo' pears harvested from 132 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 160 DAFB. Fruit growth and quality indices were monitored at 1 week interval by measuring fruit weight, length, diameter, firmness, and taste related quality indices. The calculated fruit fresh weight increased continuously with fruit development and reached to an average of 594g on Sep. 20 (160 DAFB). The ratio of length to diameter declines as fruit maturation progress, resulting in 0.898 for ripe fruit stage as a round oblate shape. Flesh firmness of 'Changjo' pears showed over 30N until 153 DAFB and then decreased abruptly with fruit ripening, reaching a final level of about 26.44N on 160 DAFB. Starch content of fruit sap was also decreased abruptly after 146 DAFB which decreased almost half of the fruits harvested at 139 DAFB. In parallel with the decrease of flesh firmness, ethanol insoluble solids (EIS) content decreased sharply with fruit ripens, only 50% of EIS was detected on the fruits harvested on 160 DAFB when compared to that of the fruits harvested on 139 DAFB (Aug. 30). The maximum value of soluble solids contents was observed in the fruits harvested on 153 DAFB, resulting in $14.2^{\circ}Brix$. The changes of skin color difference $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after 139 DAFB, coincide with the decrease of SPAD value of the fruit skin. The sugars of the 80% ethanol soluble fraction consisted mainly of fructose, sorbitol, glucose and sucrose, also increased during maturation and ripening. Fructose and sucrose contents were larger than those of glucose and sorbitol in flesh tissues. These results were explained that stored starch is converted to soluble sugars during fruit maturation, mainly in fructose and sucrose increasing the sweetness of this cultivar. Total polyphenols were increased up to middle of fruit maturation (146 DAFB) and then decreased continuously until the end of fruit maturation. Consequently, our results suggested that the commercial harvest time of 'Changjo' pears should not be passed 153 DAFB and late harvest of this cultivar would not good for quality maintenance during shelf-life. As a result of the post-harvest low-temperature acclimation experiment during the short-term transportation period, fruits harvested at 146 DAFB tended to maintain higher firmness after 14 days of simulated marketing at $25^{\circ}C$ compared to fruits harvested at 153 DAFB regardless of temperature set. And, the slower the rate of decrease to the final transport temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, the higher the incidence of internal browning and ethylene production. Therefore, in order to suppress the physiological disorder and to maintain the fruit quality when exporting to Southeast Asia in the 'Chanjo' pears, it is desirable to lower the temperature of the fruits within a short time after harvest and to set the harvest time before 146 days after full bloom.

Deep Neck Abscesses in Korean Children (소아 심부 경부 농양에 대한 임상적 고찰)

  • Purpose : Retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal abscesses are often distinguishable from other head and neck abscesses on clinical grounds, but these infections can combine and the presentations are similar to one another. Because of the advances of antibiotic therapy, the frequency of the diseases decreased considerably, but recently the incidence of neck abscesses has increased. We sought to describe the clinical presentation of patients with deep neck abscess, and implications on management. Methods : For 10 year periods, 94 cases of charts were reviewed retrospectively, who were diagnosed as neck abscesses aged below 16 years old(between January 1993 to August 2003) in 4 hospitals. Deep neck abscesses were diagnosed by surgical pus drainage, neck CT (homogenous, hypodense area with ring enhancement) and neck sono findings. Results : The annual incidence of deep neck abscess has been increased since 2000. The median age of the patients was 4 years(range, 26 days~15 years); 63% of the patients were younger than 5 years. Abscesses in the submandibular space(34%) were most common, followed by peritonsillar space(29.7%), retropharyngeal space(11.7%), combined(10.8%), parotid space(7.4%) and parapharyngeal space(6.4%). Fever(73.4%), sore throat(37.2%), decreased oral intake(34%) and neck pain(27.7%) were the most common symptoms. In 6 children(6.4%), there was refusal to move neck, in 6(6.4%) headache, and in 4(4.3%) torticollis. Respiratory distress was observed in only 1 patient(2.1%) and stridor in 1 other(2.1%). The most common physical examinations were neck swelling/mass(67%), pharyngitis(46.8%), tonsillitis(36.2 %), and cervical lymphadenopathy(28.7%). Neck stiffness was observed in 4 patients(4.3%). Total 35 organisms were isolated in 33 patients. The most common organisms cultured by patients' blood or pus were S. aureus(34%) and S. pyogenes(28.6%). Most organisms were gram positive, and had sensitivities in vancomycin(96.4%), cefotaxime(88.9%), cephalothin (86.4%), trimethoprime-sulfamethoxazole(83.3%), and clindamycin(77.8%). 77 patients(81.9%) underwent surgery plus antibiotics; 17 patients(18.1%) were treated with antibiotics only. There is no significant differences between two groups. In duration of admission, fever after admission, and antibiotic treatment. Conclusion : The incidence of deep neck abscess has increased recently and the major symptoms have been changed. The incidence of respiratory distress or stridor is decreasing, while the incidence of abnormal head and neck symptoms and signs like headache, neck stiffness, refusal to move neck, or torticollis are increasing. Gram positive organisms are predominant, S. aureus is the most common followed by S. pyogenes. 1st generation cephalosporin has high sensitivity on gram positive organisms. Treatment with surgery plus antibiotics dose not significantly decrease total duration of antibiotic treatment or admission compared to treatment with antibiotics alone.
