  • This experiment was carried out to obtain the information on the crossability, variation of chromosome number in pollen mother cell (PMC) and somatic cell of the progeny from the cross between hexaploid triticale cv. Sinkihomil and two diploid rye varieties. Seed set was 39.3 to 41.6% (averaged 40.5%) in the cross between triticale (P$_1$) and rye(P$_2$), which resulted in 0.33% in F$_2$(selfed F$_1$), 2.69% in F$_1$/P$_1$ 5.47% in F$_1$/P$_2$ respectively. However, seed set was extremely low in both reciprocal crosses when triticale was used as male. Germination rate of the crossed seed was 94.0% in F$_1$ 40.8% in F$_2$(selfed F$_1$), 59.5% in F$_1$/P$_1$ and 65.9% in F$_1$/P$_2$ from the cross between triticale and rye, respectively. Pollen fertility of F$_1$ plant was averaged 18.7% in the cross between triticale and rye. Number of Uni-, Bi-, and Trivalent in PMC was 12. 6, 6.94, and 0.53, respectively, in the F$_1$ between the triticale and rye. There were 28 chromosomes in F$_1$, 21 to 34 in F$_2$, 34 to 38 in F$_1$/P$_1$ and 19 to 23 in F$_1$/P$_2$ from the cross between the triticale and rye, respectively.

  • Establishment of mechanized soybean production system without herbicide is required for organic soybean production in recent. Effects of mechanized soybean planting with partial tillage between growing rye living mulch, which was sown in April or early May, on weed suppression, soybean early growth and yield were investigated with different rye sowing dates and locations in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Effect of rye living mulch on weed suppression at 40~50 days after soybean planting was high as much as 70~90% regardless of rye sowing dates. In particular, a strong suppression effect on the occurrence and growth of Echinochloa crus-galli which occupied 60~80% of total weed biomass was observed. Rye living mulch sown on April 9, of which biomass was more than that sown on April 27, inhibited soybean early growth severely and reduced soybean grain yield in 2007. However, soybean grain yield was no t reduced despite suppression of early growth of soybean plant by living mulch sown during from late April to early May compared with conventional planting. Rye sowing before late April was not proper considering tendency of weed occurrence in spring because of unfavorable changes in weed suppression, early growth and grain yield of soybean according to amount of living mulch.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the cropping system of forage crops and application of cattle slurry on productivity of forage crops and soil fertility. The field experiments were conducted on the silt clay loam at Gongiam, Kwangju, Kyung-gi province in Korea for two years. This study was arranged in split plot design with three replicates. Main plots were the cropping systems, such as single crop and mixed crops. Subplots were the application rate of cattle slurry, such as 0, 150 and 300 kg N/ha. The yields of dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) were hardly influenced by the cropping system, whereas DM and N yields enhanced as increasing the rates of cattle slurry application (p<0.05). The contents of crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) were hardly influenced by the cropping system, whereas CP content increased as increasing the rates of cattle slurry application (p<0.05). TDN was not differentially influenced by cattle slurry application. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were hardly influenced by the cropping system and application of cattle slurry. Organic matter (OM) content in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those in the beginning of the experiment. The OM content of soil was significantly increased by application of cattle slurry (p<0.05).

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether seedling growth be affected by immature kernels from different stages after flowering in rye, triticale, wheat and oats cultivars, for two years in Suwon. Kernels reached a near-maximum test weight at 35 days after flowering in Paldanghomil and Dooroohomil (Rye), and 30 days in Sinkihomil (Triticale), Geurumil (Wheat), and Megwiri (Oats). Test weight of immature kernels from different days after flowering were not significantly correlated with germination percentage, but highly positively correlated with their seedling height, fresh and dry weight. However, seedling height is not different among seedlings from kernels harvested at 20, 25 and 30 days (maturing time) after flowering of Sinkihomil and Megwiri, and between 25 and 30 days (maturing time) of Geurumil. Also between seedlings from 25 day and 30 day-kernel after flowering are little difference of fresh and dry weight of Sinkihomil and Megwiri. In Suwon, located at the middle part of Korea, it was suggested that Paldanghomi1 and Dooroohomil could be harvested at 35 days (June 19, and June 24, respectively) after flowering, and Sinkihomil, Geurumil, and Megwiri, at 25days (June 24, June 14 and July 4, respectively) after flowering for seed of for2:ge production.

  • This study was conducted into the effects of cover crops among the hairy vetch, red clover, rye, and hairy vetch+rye on the soil chemical and physical properties, and fruit yield in mature 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros${\times}$kaki Thunb.) trees. The shallow-rooted red clover had poor dry matter production, resulting in the lowest coverage (66%) on the orchard floor. In contrast, the highest dry matter production observed in rye and hairy vetch+rye. Estimated N, P and K production from the cover crops were the highest on the hairy vetch+rye plots, increasing soil chemicals at a depth of 0-30 cm soil. Rye or hairy vetch+rye treatments decreased the soil bulk density and solid phase. As the hairy vetch+rye treatment increased fruit yield and sugar contents, it could be proposed as an suitable cover crop for improving productivity of persimmon trees.

  • This research was conducted to analyze the cultivation performance and meteorological data of winter rye in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, and Daegu for 11 years. The objective was to compare the growth and yield of domestically cultivated Korean rye cultivar "Gogu" and identify the factors influencing them, to determine suitable cultivation areas for Korean rye cultivar in the country. The results of the study showed that both Daegu and Suwon regions possess favorable climatic conditions for winter rye cultivation, with Suwon exhibiting a superior moisture supply compared to Daegu. Furthermore, the analysis of climate suitability revealed that rainfall days and precipitation were significant factors affecting rye cultivation. Through correlation and principal component analysis, the research evaluated the interrelationship between climate, cultivation factors, and winter rye crop performance, as well as identified variations among winter rye cultivation regions. This study provides valuable insights and information for winter rye cultivation in the country, thereby assisting in the decision-making process for selecting optimal cultivation areas.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of different time and severity of defoliation on the dry matter accumulation in grain of rye (cv, Paldanghomil) and triticale (cv, Sinkihomil). The weight of the 2nd leaf blade was the greatest and this was followed by the 3rd and flag leaf in that order. The chlorophyll content in leaf blade and sheath were decreased at lower leaf position (flag > 2nd > 3rd). The average chlorophyll content of rye was higher than that of triticale. The earlier and severer defoliation was made, the more grain weight was its was decreased. As the time of defoliation was made later and the degree of its was small, 1,000 grain weight was increased. The results showed that the effect of defoliation on 1,000 grain weight followed the order of the flag, the 2nd and the 3rd leaf. The greatest 1,000 grain weight was observed at the middle part of panicle, which followed by the top and bottom part in that order.

  • This experiment was carried out to report some data such as survival rate, tetraploid production efficiency, and agronomic characteristics of offspring from the induced tetraploid by the colchicine treatment in rye. The colchicine was soaked with 0.05%, 12 hours in dark condition and at two growth stages (green seed and 2nd leaf stage) in diploid ryes. Flow cytometry (FC) was proved to be efficient and rapid tool for screening ploidy levels in rye, showing around 40 to 60 in DNA amount (DAP1) corresponding to diploid and 80 to 110 tetraploid. There were 18.5% of survival rate at green seed treatment and 78% at 2nd leaf stage in average of two rye cultivars, Gogu and Jogreen, but in reverse 50.9% and 1.1% in the ratio of tetraploid to total tillers among the plants survived, respectively, resulting in 9.42% of tetraploid production rate in green seed treatment and 0.86% at 2nd leaf stage, respectively. In green seed treatment, there were 33% of survival rate in Gogu, 4% in Jogreen in 1st year, but 56% in Gogu, 21% in Jogreen and 49% in Charmgreen, respectively. The rate of tetraploid to total spikes among survived was 53.7% in Gogu, 32.4% in Jogreen, and 50.9% in average in 1st year, and 64.1% in Gogu, 51.5% in Jogreen, 60% in Charmgreen, and 60.5% in average in 2nd year. In green seed treatment, tetraploid production rate (survival rate ${\times}$ tetraploid ratio ${\times}$ 100) was 17.7% in Gogu and 1.3% in Jogreen and 9.42% in average in 1st year, and 35.9% in Gogu, 10.8% in Jogreen, 29.4% in Charmgreen, and 25.4% in average of three diploid rye cultivars. By the colchicine treatment with 0.05% for 12 hours in Gogu and Jogreen, 35 tetraploid plants were obtained and they produced 2,673 seeds with 148 spikes. There were 3.3-4.4 in the number of spikes per plant, 15.6-18.3 in grain number per spike, and 37.6 g in Gogu and 46.8 g in Jogreen in the 1,000-grain weight.

  • This experiment was conducted to know a substantial body of information about the differences of the important forage characteristics; green fodder yield, dry matter yield, TDN%, TDN yield and so forth of the seven cultivars selected as the forage crops (Rye, Triticale, Wheat and Barley) depending on the specific times of cutting stage, on the Wheat and Barley Research Institute from October, 1983 to June, 1984, and the results summarized as follows. Green fodder yield & dry matter weight, when clipped at 20, 30 April and 10 May, of varieties Homil #2 showed the most yielding capacity, but when clipped at 20 May, Suweon#8 (triticale) showed the most green fodder yield whereas Homil #1 the most significant dry matter weight. Plant height, in the cases of Paldanghomil, Homil #1 & Homil #2, showed distinctly longer than that of Bunong, Suweon #8 & Suweon #9 and continued to grow even after the heading date. Dry matter ratio increased with time (Dry matter yield/green fodder yield x100). TDN % decreased but TDN yield increased with time but Homil #1, Homil #2 and Paldanghomil showed relatively the higher values. In the elements of nutrient of cell wall, Suweon #8 & Bungong among 7 cultivars have good quality. The reasonable clipping date of wheat &barley as green fodder crops are 10 May to 20 May, but if clipped before 10 May and 20 May, Homil #2 and Suweon #8 became the promising forage crops, respectively.
