  • Combustion instability occurred in the combustion test of solid rocket motor with large aspect ration Length/Diameter (L/D) and cylinder-slot grain. As a result of spectral analysis of the pressure perturbation, it was confirmed that the central axis longitudinal frequency was dominant, so that the length of the cylinder part was increased to eliminate the coincidence with acoustic node. In addition, acoustic modal analysis and flow analysis were performed to analyze the cause of instability by unsteady flow structure in solid rocket motors. It was confirmed that the combustion instability is reduced by quantitative comparison of the amplitude and frequencies of the pressure inside the combustion chamber using the grain shape before and after the design change. Finally, a combustion test was performed to verify that the combustion instability was resolved as in the flow analysis.

  • Recently, safety diagnosis of the existing structures has been emerged as important issue. In particular, systematical and precise safety diagnostics for steel structures for power substation, have been required. Steel structures for power substation are under the periodical impact loads from operations of gas insulated switchgear. These loading condition accelerates damage and aging of structure. The objective of this research is to evaluate damage of structure under periodical impact loads. To evaluate the integrity of structures as organizing mathematical models including the dynamic characteristics of structures, Frequency Domain Decomposition method was choiced and an algorism was proposed. For verifying this methods and algorism, a mathematical model is composed of the development of a variety of reverse analysis and a signal processing technology reflecting physical damage of structures. A series of analysis and test results indicatge that proposed method has a confidence for applying a filed test. Therefore, it is expected to be able to take advantage of system identification to detect damage for the maintenance and management of steel structures under periodical impact loads such as power substation.

  • In this present study, in order to update the finite element model considering the boundary conditions, a method has been proposed. The conventional finite element model updating method, updates the finite element model by using the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, mode shape) which can be estimated from the ambient vibration test. Therefore, prediction of the static response of an actual structure is difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the physical properties is relatively hard. A novel method has been proposed to overcome the limitations of conventional method. Initially, the proposed method estimates the rotational spring constant of a finite element model using the deflection of structure and the rotational displacement of support measurements. The final updated finite element model is constructed by estimating the material properties of the structure using the finite element model with updated rotational spring constant and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. The proposed finite element model updating method is validated through numerical simulation and compared with the conventional finite element model updating method.

  • In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

  • This study proposes a method to predict noise reduction based on noise-reduction measures, using harmonic response analysis, for transformer design. The dynamic elastic coefficients of the components comprising the actual transformer were determined by manufacturing the materials of the transformer components into simple-shaped specimens, followed by a comparison of the modes between the experiments and the analyses. A finite element model of the transformer was implemented, and harmonic response analysis was performed by deriving the exciting force of the transformer. Subsequently, the theoretical sound power level of the transformer was derived from the results of the harmonic response analysis. Finally, noise reduction measures were established, and the noise reduction amounts were compared between the experiments and the analyses, before and after applying the measures. Through the comparison and analyses of the noise reduction measures, it was confirmed that the trends in the experiments and analyses matched.

  • Numerical model became one of most important tools for identifying the state of an existing structure in accordance with development of numerical analysis techniques. A numerical model should be updated based on the measured responses from the existing structure to accurately use the model for identifying the state of the bridge and executing numerical experiments. In this study, a new model updating method based on repetition method without a differential function is introduced and applicability for high speed railway bridge is verified with dynamic stability analysis. A fine measurement based on measurement points roaming method was executed with an wireless measurement system for precise dynamic characteristic analysis. The natural frequencies and mode shapes were estimated by correlation analysis and a mode decomposition technique. An initial numerical model was constructed based on design drawings and the model have been updated in accordance with the introduced model updating method. The results from numerical experiment and field test have been compared for verifying the applicability of the model updating method. And the dynamic stability analysis has been executed to verify the usability of the updated numerical model and the model updating method. It seems that the model updating method can be used for various bridges after evaluation of applicability for other type bridges in further studies.

  • FBG sensors are capable of measuring the strain of structures easily and more durably than electric resistance gauges. Thus, many researches are dedicated to the application for the response monitoring or non-destructive evaluation of structures using FBG sensors. Additionally, the measured strains at the top and bottom of a cross-section can be transformed into the curvature of the section, which can be used to calculate its vertical displacement. Hence, this study aims to measure the dynamic strain signals of a steel section simply supported beam and to estimate the dynamic displacement from the strain signals, after which the estimated displacement is com pared with the measured displacement. The dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shape) of the beam are predicted from both the estimated and measured displacement signals, and from the strain time history of the FBG sensors. The predicted properties are compared with those of an analytical model of the beam. The estimated displacement. However, the predicted dynamic properties from both the estimated displacements and the measured strains are well-correlated with those from the measured displacement. It is therefore appreciated that the estimation of the dynamic properties of FBG sensor signals is reasonable. Especially, the strain signal of the FBG sensor was amplified at a higher-frequency region in comparison with the displacement estimation with higher-mode properties.

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) composites are comprised of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. Lots of theoretical and experimental works have been done on ME composites in the last couple of decades. The output performance of ME composites has been enhanced by optimizing the constituent phases, interface layer, dimensions of the ME composites, different operating modes, etc. However, the detailed information about the characterization of ME coupling in ME composites is not provided yet. Therefore, in this tutorial paper, we are giving an insight into the details of measurements of ME voltage coefficient of ME composites both at off-resonance and resonance conditions. A symmetric type Gelfenol/PMN-PZT/Gelfenol ME composites were fabricated by sandwiching (011) 32-mode PMN-PZT single crystal between two Galfenol plates by epoxy bonding are used for the example of ME coupling measurement. The details about the experimental setup used for the measurement of ME voltage coefficient are provided. Furthermore, a step-by-step measurement of ME voltage coefficient using computerized program is demonstrated. We believe the present experimental measurement details can help readers to understand the concept of ME coupling and its analysis.

  • Along with the development of coasts, islands and mountains, the demand of long-span bridges increases which, in turn, brings forth the construction of cable-supported bridges like suspension and cable-stayed bridges. There are various types of statically indeterminate structures widely applied that supported the main girder with stay cables, main cables, hanger cables with aesthetic structural appearance. As to the cable-supported bridges, the health monitoring of a bridge can be identified by measuring tension force on cable repeatedly. The tension force on cable is measured either by direct measurement of stress of cable using load cell or hydraulic jack, or by vibration method estimating tension force using cable shape and measured dynamic characteristics. In this study, a method to estimate dynamic characteristics of hanger cables by using a digital image processing is suggested. Digital images are acquired by a portable digital camcorder, which is the sensor to remotely measure dynamic responses considering convenient and economical aspects for use. A digital image correlation(DIC) technique is applied for digital image processing, and an image transform function(ITF) to correct the geometric distortion induced from the deformed images is used to estimate subpixel. And, the correction of motion of vision-based measurement system using a fixed object in an image without installing additional sensor can be enhanced the resolution of dynamic responses and modal frequencies of hanger cables.

  • The aeroelastic stability of a fighter type aircraft can be severly affected by the store mass, aerodynamic characteristics, and store combinations. Hence, the stability for the all store configurations must be substantiated before the aircraft in service. For the aeroelastic analysis, the design data and information for the aircraft structure, mass distribution, control surface characteristics, and external shape etc. are required. This is the reason that the store compatibility substantiations by a third party are restricted. However, according to the change of operational environment or the improvement of avionic technology, a new external store is developed and it should be installed on an aircraft without the support from the original supplier. This paper describe the process to substantiate the aeroelastic compatibility between a new external store and an imported aircraft whose design data is not available to a third party operating the aircraft.
