With the development of Internet technology, the construction and spread of network environment increased educational adaption and utilization based on World Wide Web. Learners are educated in the competitive, individual, or collaborative learning structure. Among them, competitive and individual educational methods are criticized for bringing about excessive competition and a lack of cooperation. As a new way of educational method, the interest for the collaborative learning structure was increased. In this perspective, we design and implement a web-based collaborative learning system which is adapted the merit and model of collaboration learning and show that the proposed system improves learning achievement and motivation by experimental study on student groups.
In this study, we investigated the perceptions and the educational needs of pre-service primary and secondary teachers on cooperative learning in science. The survey was administered to 102 seniors at the department of science education in three universities of education and 64 seniors at the department of chemistry education in three colleges of education. The results revealed that the pre-service primary and secondary teachers learned the theories and experienced the practices on cooperative learning through various methods in the several subjects, and especially had many difficulties in appling cooperative learning to the demonstrations and/or the actual science classes. The degree of their understanding on cooperative learning was comparatively high, and the perceptions on the advantage/disadvantage of cooperative learning in science, the willingness practicing it, and the outside aids influencing on implementing it were relatively positive. They highly perceived on the necessities of diverse educations related on cooperative learning in science in pre-service teacher education processes. The willingness implementing cooperative learning in science class was significantly correlated with the necessities of diverse educations. These were also significantly correlated with the perceptions on the advantage/disadvantage of cooperative learning in science, the educational assessments on the advantage/disadvantage of it, and the educational assessments on the outside aids influencing on implementing it, respectively. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

This study investigated the influences of the cooperative and the individualistic learning strategies on the academic achievement and the attitudes toward science instruction and science by the level of achievement. These two learning strategies endowed students with the responsibility of learning and emphasized student-centered learning which included higher order thinking activities. Cooperative learning group students studied the tasks through small group discussion, and individualistic learning group students solved the same ones individually. In the traditional group. teacher-centered expository lesson was used. The subjects of this study were 7th graders of coed middle school, and were taught about separation of mixture for 10 class periods. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the test scores of academic achievement for cooperative learning group were significantly higher than those of individualistic and traditional learning groups. The attitudes toward science instruction and science were also more positive in cooperative learning group than the others. No interactions between the treatment and the level of previous achievement indicated that the cooperative learning strategy was effective regardless of the level of achievement.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the group reward and cooperative skill training on science achievement and learning motivation of elementary students. 3 classes of the 6th grade students were selected from an elementary school in Busan. Group I took traditional cooperative learning (TCL), group II took cooperative learning with competitive group reward (GR), and group III was trained in cooperative skill (CS) before cooperative learning. Students were taught about 'weather forecast' for thirteen periods and problem-based learning steps were applied in each class. The results from this study were as follows: First, there was an interactive effect between the treatment and achievement level in the science achievement test scores. In the case of high-level students the group reward was more effective than cooperative skill training on the science achievement; on the other hand, in the case of low-level students the cooperative skill training was more effective than the group reward on the science achievement. Second, there was no interactive effect between the treatment and achievement level in the motivation scores.
There have been a lot of studies on problem based instruction and collaborative learning environment, but there is a lack of the studies on a system that offers a collaborative learning environment for problem based instruction. Thus I developed and applied a collaborative instruction system for web based problem based instruction. The system was comprised of the collaborative instruction room and the problem based instruction room so that the students could solve the problems by groups through collaborative instruction. The developed system was applied to the actual learning. As a result, the system contributed to the students' improvement in academic achievements, drew a high degree of responses from them, and had positive effects on their affective domain.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate if any effects of GI cooperative learning method, which is compared to the effects of traditional competitive teaching-learning method on the students' academic attitude in middle school social studies classes. Conclusively, it is asserted to be a much more effective teaching-learning method. Some statistical evidences were gathered by questionnaire method just after the experimental classes being applied for a semester to the 241 first year middle school students in a small city. Using the t-test procedure, it is conformed that GI cooperative learning method can draw much more positive changes in the academic attitude of the students. In short, such positive changes in student's academic learning attitude can be related with the increase of self-trust in learning processes, the change in the conception of the subject, and the spontaneous interaction and verbal communication among the group members.
Curriculum and Evaluation Standard for School Mathematics에서도 수학 지도 방법과 평가 방법이 일치하여야 한다고 강조하고 있다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 필요성에 의거하여 수학과 소집단 협동 학습의 유형을 알아보고, 협동적 문제 해결의 평가 방법을 알아보고자 한다.
This qualitative research investigated in-service science teachers' perceptions about cooperative learning and their perceived barriers in implementing cooperative learning in their classrooms. The underlying premise for cooperative learning is founded in constructivist epistemology. Cooperative learning (CL) is presented as an alternative frame to the current educational system which emphasizes content memorization and individual student performance through competition. An in-depth interview was conducted with 18 in-service science teachers who enrolled in the first-class teacher certification program during 2001 summer vacation. These secondary school teachers's interview data were analyzed and categorized into three areas: teachers' definition of cooperative learning, issues with implementing cooperative learning in classrooms, and teachers' and students' responses towards cooperative learning. Each of these areas are further subdivided into 10 themes: teachers' perceived meaning of cooperative learning, the importance of talk in learning, when to use cooperative learning, how to end a cooperative class, how to group students for cooperative learning, obstacles to implementing cooperative learning, students' reactions to cooperative learning, teachers' reasons for choosing (not choosing) student-centered approaches to learning/teaching, characteristics of teachers who use cooperative learning methods, and teachers' reasons for resisting cooperative learning. Detailed descriptions of the teachers' responses and discussion on each category are provided. For the development and implementation of CL in more classrooms, there should be changes and supports in the following five areas: (1) teachers have to examine their pedagogical beliefs toward constructivist perspectives, (2) teacher (re)education programs have to provide teachers with cooperative learning opportunities in methods courses, (3) students' understanding of their changed roles (4) supports in light of curriculum materials and instructional resources, (5) supports in terms of facilities and administrators. It's important to remember that cooperative learning is not a panacea for all instructional problems. It's only one way of teaching and learning, useful for specific kinds of teaching goals and especially relevant for classrooms with a wide mix of student academic skills. Suggestions for further research are also provided.

Since the use of computer-mediated communication(CMC) systems has been steadily increasing in the teaching and learning environments, this study attempted to describe some of instructional strategies which can be employed as a medium of cooperative learning. One of the best way to conduct network-assisted instruction is to embed such a medium into cooperative learning. Network-assisted cooperative learning maximizes students' own learning and each other's learning using CMC, in which students can actively participate in their learning processes. The characteristics of CMC-transmission and search of information, interactivity, time and place independence-assist and enhance cooperative learning. In this study, the instructional strategies for cooperative learning via CMC are suggested as following: (1) choose the instructional goals, (2) structure positive interdependence, (3) select guidelines for grouping, (4) train cooperative skills to students, (5) set up the environments such as electronic bulletin-board, and (6) develop assessment tools. Finally, this study suggests that potentials of network-assisted cooperative learning can be realized by providing environments and thinking tools for cooperative learning. Appropriate theory and practice need to be followed up to support the cooperative learning systems.
