Rockbolts are the primary-supports in NATM tunnels and are widely used at tunnel construction sites. Among the rockbolts methods applied in domestic tunnel design, fully grouted rockbolts are the most representative and frequently used. Fully grouted rockbolts exhibit relative behavior between the bolt and the ground due to the grout material. However, during numerical analysis for tunnel design, fully grouted rockbolts are often modeled in a way that does not reflect their behavior characteristics. This may result in underestimating or overestimating the force of the supports. Based on a literature review, it was analyzed that fully grouted rockbolts are modeled using truss element or cable element. To analyze the effect of grout properties of cable elements on rockbolts behavior, this paper compared the behavior of rockbolts in two models: one estimating grout properties based on rockbolt pull-out test data, and another assuming complete adhesion between the rockbolts and the ground by applying large grout properties. Under identical tunnel conditions, the numerical analysis was conducted by modeling the fully grouted rockbolts differently using truss and cable elements, and the tunnel behavior was analyzed. The research results suggest that modeling fully grouted rockbolts as a function of the interface effect between the bolts and the ground, specifically considering grout, is desirable. The use of pull-out test data to simulate the behavior of actual fully grouted rockbolts was considered as a valid approach.
This paper reports the process two 11th grade students went through in reinventing derivatives on their own via a context problem involving the concept of velocity. In the reinvention process, one of the students conceived a tangent line as the limit of a secant line, and then the other student explained to a peer that the slope of a tangent line was the geometric mean of derivative. The students also used technology to concentrate on essential thinking to search for mathematical concepts and help visually understand them. The purpose of this study was to provide meaningful implications to school practices by describing students' process of reinvention of derivatives. This study revealed certain characteristics of the students' reinvention process of derivatives and changes in the students' thinking process.

In the development and mass production of polymers, there are many uncontrollable variables. Even small changes in chemical composition, structure, and processing conditions can lead to large variations in properties. Therefore, Traditional linear modeling techniques that assume a general environment often produce significant errors when applied to field data. In this study, we propose a new modeling method (GPR-SEM) that combines Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to study the Friction-Coefficient and Flexural-Strength properties of Polyacetal resin, an engineering plastic, in order to meet the recent trend of using plastics in industrial drive components. And we also consider the possibility of using it for materials modeling with nonlinearity.

The bent foundation with single drilled shafts is suitable and economical in South Korea, which has good rock in a shallow depth. This foundation has been designed with an elastic design concept. To apply a plastic design concept written in Korea Bridge Design Criteria, a detail design regulation, which includes the method for a plastic hinge point to occur above the ground, rebar arrangement and soil modelling, should be defined. Soil modelling should be considered in the respect of structural engineer's practicality. In this paper, single drilled shaft piers with 1m diameter are constructed, and cyclic lateral load tests loaded at 4m above the ground are taken to examine the behavior. Reduced diameter shaft above the ground and remaining the steel casing under the ground were used to induce plastic hinge to occur above the ground. Simplified soil models such as elastic relation and p-y curve are adapted, and the prediction results are compared with test results. Prediction results of a model bridge were compared according to soil models with time domain analyses, and design criteria of soil were proposed.
In this study, the behavior of self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles was investigated by using a numerical study and field tests in urban excavations. This earth retaining wall can provide stable support against lateral earth pressures through its use of stabilizing piles that provide passive resistance to lateral earth pressures arising due to ground excavations. Field tests at two sites were performed to verify the performance of instrumented retaining wall with stabilizing piles. Furthermore, detailed 3D numerical analyses were conducted to provide insight into the in situ wall behavior. The 3D numerical methodology in the present study represents the behavior of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles. A number of 3D numerical analyses were carried out on the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles to assess the results stemming from wide variations of influencing parameters such as the soil condition, the pile spacing, the distance between the front pile and the rear pile, and the pile embedded depth. Based on the results of the parametric study, the maximum horizontal displacement and the maximum bending moment significantly decreased when the retaining wall with stabilizing piles is used. Moreover, the horizontal displacement reduction effect of influencing parameters such as the pile spacing and the distance between the front pile and the rear pile is more sensitive in sandy soil, with a higher friction angle compared to clayey soil. In engineering practice, reducing the pile spacing and increasing the distance between the front pile and the rear pile can effectively improve the stability of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles.
In this study, the virtual fixed point analysis and 3D full-modeling analysis for pile bent structures are conducted by considering various influencing factors and the applicability of the virtual fixed point theory is discussed. Also, a discrete analysis calculating separately both the superstructure and substructure of pile bent structures is performed on the basis of an equivalent base spring model by taking into account the major influencing parameters such as soil conditions, combined loading and pile diameter. The results show that the settlement and lateral deflection of the virtual fixed point theory are smaller than those of 3D full-modeling analysis. On the other hand, the virtual fixed point analysis overestimates the axial force and bending moment compared with 3D full-modeling analysis. It is shown that the virtual fixed point analysis cannot adequately predict the real behavior of pile bent structures. It is also found that discrete analysis gives similar results of lateral deflection and bending moment to those of unified analysis. Based on this study, it is found that discrete analysis considering column-pile interaction conditions is capable of predicting reasonably well the behavior of pile bent structures. It can be effectively used to perform a more economical design of pile bent structures.

We simulated the fault reactivation experiment conducted at 'Main Fault' intersecting the low permeability clay formations of Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory in Switzerland using TOUGH-FLAC simulator. The fluid flow along a fault was modelled with solid elements and governed by Darcy's law with the cubic law in TOUGH2, whereas the mechanical behavior of a single fault was represented by creating interface elements between two separating rock blocks in FLAC3D. We formulate the hydro-mechanical coupling relation of hydraulic aperture to consider the elastic fracture opening and failure-induced dilation for reproducing the abrupt changes in injection flow rate and monitoring pressure at fracture opening pressure. A parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of in-situ stress condition and fault deformation and strength parameters and to find the optimal parameter set to reproduce the field observations. In the best matching simulation, the fracture opening pressure and variations of injection flow rate and monitoring pressure showed good agreement with field experiment results, which suggests the capability of the numerical model to reasonably capture the fracture opening and propagation process. The model overestimated the fault displacement in shear direction and the range of reactivated zone, which was attributed to the progressive shear failures along the fault at high injection pressure. In the field experiment results, however, fracture tensile opening seems the dominant mechanism affecting the hydraulic aperture increase.

A recent increase of interests on the influence of 3D printing and low prices of 3D printers makes a high possibility of 3D printer adoption as a educational equipment in public education settings. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy proposed '3D printing industry development strategies', and had pilot schools to include understanding of 3D printing concepts and practices in the primary, secondary and high schools' curriculum. However, even if 3D printers were provided in educational settings, the research on educational content and methods to properly react to this change is very limited. Therefore, this study reviewed various 3D modeling software because a modeling skill is a prerequisite skill to use 3D printers, and proposed a creative design spiral based teaching content that can be incorporated in elementary school contexts.

Construction graphical simulations usually do not reflect physical properties of construction equipment and material because there are restricted to the geometric model. The complete description of construction operations is difficult for graphical simulation without a physical modeling. The object of this research is to enhance the functionality of restricted simulation system to geometric model. And research is conducted to overcome the limitation of current construction graphical simulation system through the connection geometric model and physical model with the physical properties of construction equipment and material such as crane's cable oscillation. The motion equations for the oscillation of crane cable as a result of the trolley's movement and the boom's rotation were derived. The equations were solved through numerical analysis and the results were simulated visually. The realistic description with physical modeling of construction operations will contribute for ensuring preliminary against risks and improving constructability as well as the application of various fields.

This paper presents the results of the parametric study to investigate the effects of several analysis modeling parameters such as support conditions, member connectivities and cable member stiffness on the main mode shapes and natural frequencies of a representative disaster resilient greenhouse structure. In addition, an ambient vibration test was performed on the representative greenhouse structure and its main mode shapes and natural frequencies were obtained. By comparing the experimental and analysis results, a proper analysis modeling method of the representative greenhouse structure was proposed.
