Physically-based researches on simulating helicopter motions have been achieved in the field of aeronautics, aerodynamics and others. These results, however, have not been appled in the computer graphics area, mainly due to their complex equations and heavy computations. In this paper, we propose a dynamics model of helicopter rotor blades, which would be easy to implement, and suitable for real-time simulations of helicopters in the computer graphics area. Helicopters fly by the forces due to the collisions between air and rotor blades. These forces can be interpreted as the impulsive forces between the fluid and the rigid body. Based on these impulsive forces, we propose an approximated dynamics model of rotor blades, and it enables us to simulate the helicopter motions using existing rigid body simulation methods. We compute forces due to the movement of rotor blades according to the Newton's method, to achieve its real-time computations. Our prototype implementation shows real-time aerial navigation of helicopters, which are murk similar to the realistic motions.

In this study, aerodynamic drag of a bearingless rotor hub was predicted by computational fluid dynamics methodology using unstructured overset mixed meshes. The calculated results showed that the drag due to pressure forces rather than the viscous drag act as a major factor on both the fuselage and rotor hub, and the drag acting on the torque tube accounted for the largest portion in the hub drag. It was also found the hub drag accounted for 39 ~ 41% of the fuselage drag. Finally, the result confirmed the drag of the designed rotor hub satisfied the requirement of the aerodynamic hub drag by comparing with the drag trend of developed helicopter.
The requirement for the aerodynamic hub drag, allocated from the system requirement of development of a bearingless rotor hub, was analyzed and embodied to be substantiated by the methodology assigned from the requirement. Drag prediction for the initial hub configuration was carried out by hand calculation using aerodynamic drag coefficients and the design change about the sectional shape of torque tube was suggested to satisfy the requirement. Finally, drag prediction was performed for the changed hub configuration by using unstructured overset mesh technique and parallel computation and the calculated result satisfied the requirement of the aerodynamic hub drag. It was found that the drag of final hub configuration was also within the range of drag inferred from the trendline of developed helicopter.

The unsteady panel and time-marching free wake are applied to the rotor aerodynamics and wake behaviour. Numerical results of panel and free wake are compared and validated with experimental data. Using these methods, unsteady rotor aerodynamics in BVI condition is analyzed and discussed in detail.

The flight trajectory of a boomerang is predicted with the momentum theory (actuating disk theory) and the blade element method generally used as tools to analyze in the rotary-wing aerodynamics. Boomerangs made by students are actually compared with the computational results, utilized to get the physical intuition. The transition from helicopter mode to autogyro mode with the gyroscopic precession is observed in numerical analysis and experiment like a 'flying rotor' after the boomerang taking off. The whole system is shown to be highly nonlinear and very sensitive to the initial conditions. Various flight loci may be obtained if we change the parameters.

Degradation of handling qualities(HQs) due to bad weather or mechanical failure can pose a fatal risk to pilots unfamiliar with such situation. In particular, icing is an important issue to consider as it is a frequent cause of accidents. Most of the previous research works focuses on aerodynamic performance changes due to icing and the corresponding icing modeling or methods to prevent icing, whereas the present work attempts to actively compensate for HQ degradation due to icing on a full-scale helicopter through flight control law design. To this end, the present work first demonstrates HQ degradation due to icing using CONDUIT software, and subsequently presents a robust control design via the RS-LQR(Robust Servomechanism Linear Quadratic Regulation) procedure to compensate for the HQ degradation. Simulation results show that the proposed robust control maintains Level 1 HQ in the presence of icing.
In this paper, a vibratory disturbance to the rotor system generated by gyroscopic precession through helicopter rotor is examined. Also, active vibration reduction method is designed and simulated by designing feedback controller. For this purpose, structural analysis is carried out using EDISON's geometric exact beam program which can analyze the rotor with the cantilever condition. And the aeroelastic analysis is performed by coupling it with the simple aerodynamic model. In order to obtain the real-time structural response, the EDISON program analysis results were modeled by nonlinear equations and the Newton-Raphson method was used for the trim analysis.

Helicopter rotor blade is required to be designed by considering the interacting effects among aerodynamics, flexibility, and controllability. The reverse design allows the structural components to have common characteristics by using the configuration numerics and experimental results. This paper aims to design the composite rotor blade which will feature common characteristics with that of BO-105. The present engineering design procedure is done by dividing the rotor blade into a few sections and composite laminates across the cross section. For each section, variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis (VABS) program is used to evaluate its flapwise, lagwise, and torsion stiffnesses to have discrepancy smaller than certain tolerance. Finally, CAMRAD II is used to predict the stress acting on the rotor blade during the specific flight condition and to check whether the present deign is structurally valid.

In this work the realistic install performance analysis of a helicopter was performed together with power extraction enabling to operate auxiliary system as well as intake pressure loss, loss due to bleed air, etc. which must be considered in practical propulsion system's performance modelling to be installed to the airframe. The pressure loss occurring in intake was estimated from the intake performance map with relationships of Mach Number and pressure loss. In order to evaluate the proposed installed performance model, the experimental data for comparison must be needed when mounted in propulsion system. However because of lack of accessibility to such real data at the moment, the alternative way was made through comparison that the analysis results by the proposed model were compared with a wellknown commercial program GASTURB's analysis results. The validity of the proposed installed performance model was consequently confirmed because its average deferences from the GASTURB's results were within 0.5%.
