Growth Characteristics and Green Manure Productivities of Hairy Vetch and Woolly Pod Vetch under Different Sowing Seasons in the Highland Area (고랭지에서 파종시기에 따른 헤어리베치와 울리포드베치의 생육특성 및 녹비생산성)

  • The highland area remained bare for the winter and spring seasons and this condition has resulted in soil erosion. In this areas, crop rotation by legume has not been commonly practiced. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the growth characteristics and nitrogen yield as a green manure crop according to sowing seasons of hairy vetch and woolly pod vetch. In this experiment, we was investigated the growth characteristics, winter tolerance, soil coverage and productivities of hairy vetch and woolly pod vetch. We cultivated two hairy vetch(Madison, H1) and two woolly pod vetch(Naomi, Haymaker) varieties in the highland area from 2006 to 2007. The result are summarized as follows; The plant height of hairy vetch increased with the progress of growth stage until flowering stage. The wintering rate of hairy vetch was $79{\sim}83%$ in highland area. But, the wintering rate of woolly pod vetch was $29.5{\sim}39.2%$. The 100% soil coverage of hairy vetch was reached between end of May and beginning of June under autumn sowing, and between end of June and beginning of July under spring sowing. The weeds density of hairy vetch field under autumn sowing was lower than that under spring sowing. Dry matter yield of hairy vetch was significantly higher than that of woolly pod vetch under autumn sowing. The dry matter yield of hairy vetch and woolly pod vetch were $5,255{\sim}5,405kg/ha$ and $3,520{\sim}3,640kg/ha$, respectively. But, hairy vetch in spring sowing was not significantly higher fresh matter yield than that of woolly pod vetch. The nitrogen content in hairy vetch and woolly pod vetch was $2.98{\sim}3.08$ and $2.74{\sim}3.21%$, respectively. There were no significant difference in nitrogen content of the hairy vetch and woolly pod vetch under the spring sowing. N-uptake of hairy vetch was significantly higher than that of woolly pod vetch in autumn sowing. The N uptake was $156{\sim}164\;kg/ha$ in hairy vetch and $96{\sim}101\;kg/ha$ in woolly pod vetch under autumn sowing. It was thought that hairy vetch was better than woolly pod vetch as a green manure crop in autumn sowing considering wintering rate and yield of dry matter in highland area. And woolly pod vetch could use as a green manure crop under spring sowing in highland area.

Effect of Cover Crops on the Soil Properties and Fruit Quality in a Persimmon Orchard (녹비작물이 단감과원의 토양 특성과 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted into the effects of cover crops among the hairy vetch, red clover, rye, and hairy vetch+rye on the soil chemical and physical properties, and fruit yield in mature 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros${\times}$kaki Thunb.) trees. The shallow-rooted red clover had poor dry matter production, resulting in the lowest coverage (66%) on the orchard floor. In contrast, the highest dry matter production observed in rye and hairy vetch+rye. Estimated N, P and K production from the cover crops were the highest on the hairy vetch+rye plots, increasing soil chemicals at a depth of 0-30 cm soil. Rye or hairy vetch+rye treatments decreased the soil bulk density and solid phase. As the hairy vetch+rye treatment increased fruit yield and sugar contents, it could be proposed as an suitable cover crop for improving productivity of persimmon trees.

Application of Molybdenum Enhances Nitrogen Fixation and Transfer, and Biomass Production under a Hairy Vetch/Barley Mixture Cropping System (풋거름 보리-헤어리베치 혼파 작부체계에서 몰리브덴 시용이 질소 고정, 이동 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: Mixed cropping of hairy vetch and Barley is widely used as a green manure for reducing chemical fertilizers while maintaining soil fertility in paddy soil. We investigated the effect of Molybdenum (Mo) fertilizer on vetch N2 fixation, biomass production and transfer N from vetch to barley under a hairy vetch-barley mixed cropping system. METHODS AND RESULTS: The barley and hairy vetch were sowed at a rate of 135 and 23 kg/ha, respectively, without chemical fertilizer application but with Mo fertilizer at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kg/ha as a treatment. The percentage of hairy vetch N derived from air N2 fixation (%Ndfa) and N transfer from hairy vetch to barley (%Ndfv) was determined by the 15N natural abundance method. Although application of Mo at 2.0 kg/ha significantly increased biomass of both barley and hairy vetch, the biomass was decreased at application of Mo 4.0 kg/ha. At the application of Mo 2.0 kg/ha, the percentage of Ndfa and Ndfv was 81.7 and 53.9, respectively, which are significantly higher than that of the treatments without Mo. CONCLUSION: These results highlight that application of Mo fertilizer can be an effective measures to improve N fixation in hairy vetch and biomass production in both barley and hairy vetch.

The Effects of Nitrogen Rates on The growth and Yield of Waxy Corn after Cultivating Hairy Vetch in Agricultural Fields with The Stream (하천변 농경지에서 헤어리베치를 재배한 후 질소시비량에 따른 찰옥수수의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to figure out the growth and yield of waxy corn after cultivating the hairy vetch which was mostly used as a green manure crop. The waxy corn showed the growth and yield efficiency relative to conventional culture after the hairy vetch was returned to as the green manure and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer increased, and the LAI was similar to the conventional culture when less than 18 kg. Length of ear slightly decreased compared to 188 mm of conventional culture when the hairy vetch was used as the green manure and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer was less than 9 kg, but the length of ear increased relative to the conventional culture when the amount of applied nitrogen fertilizer was more than 18 kg. The highest 100-kernel weight was 35.4 g with the hairy vetch and 27 kg of nitrogen fertilizer treatment. The lowest 100-kernel weight was 27.4 g with the hairy vetch and 0 kg of nitrogen fertilizer treatment. Quantity with the hairy vetch and 9 kg of the nitrogen fertilizer treatment was similar the conventional culture. Suger content with the hairy vetch and more than 18 kg of the nitrogen fertilizer treatment was higher than the conventional culture. Thickness of pericarp showed no difference among treatments.

Effect of Mixed Cultivation of Green Manure Crops on Mineral Nutrients, Microbial Activities, Weed Occurrences and Yields of Red-pepper (토양 무기양분, 미생물활성, 잡초발생 및 고추수량에 대한 녹비작물 혼파효과)

  • 겨울철 농경지 이용율 제고 및 자연경관 조성을 위하여 녹비작물을 재배하는 면적이 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 그 동안 녹비작물에 대한 연구는 주로 파종적기, 작물에 대한 양분공급효과 및 타감 효과 등에 집중되어왔다. 본 연구에서는 토양 중 양분공급 및 미생물활성의 경시적 변화, 잡초억제 및 작물생육에 대한 녹비작물의 투입효과를 알아보기 위하여 수행하였다. 국립농업과학원 구내포장에서 2007년 9월 하순에 헤어리베치(8kg/10a)와 호밀(10kg/10a) 종자를 파종한 후, 이듬해 4월 하순에 수확하여 토양에 환원하였다. 질소공급량은 화학비료(15.2kgN/10a) 대비 헤어리베치(32.2kg/10a, 212%), 호밀(9.2kg/10a, 60%) 및 헤어리베치+호밀(15.5kg/10a, 102%)로 헤어리베치의 질소공급효과가 매우 높았다. 토양 무기태질소 함량은 녹비 처리 후 30일경에 최대에 도달하였으나, 호밀 처리구는 조사기간 동안 큰 변화가 없었다. 토양 유기물 함량의 변화는 시험 전(10DBI)과 비교하여 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 녹비환원 후 10일경에 일시적으로 감소하는 경향을 보였는데 이는 녹비환원 후 토양경운에 의한 영향으로 판단되며, 무기태질소와는 달리 호밀처리구의 유기물함량이 지속적으로 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 토양 탄수화물(수용성 당)은 시험 전에 가장 높았으며, 시간의 경과와 함께 서서히 감소되는 양상을 보였으며 토양 미생물탄소 및 미생물질소의 양은 녹비처리구가 화학비료 처리구에 비해 높았으며 녹비환원 후 50일 까지는 증가하다가 그 이후에 감소하는 경향을 보였는데 이는 토양의 무기태질소 및 탄수화물과 밀접한 관계가 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 녹비처리 후 85일경에 잡초발생량을 조사한 결과, 화학비료 처리구에 비하여 헤어리베치 처리구는 40%, 호밀 처리구는 68%, 헤어리베치+호밀 처리구는 40%의 잡초억제효과가 있었다. 고추과의 수량은 화학비료 처리구(702kg/10a)>헤어리베치(694kg>10a)>헤어리베치+호밀(361kg/10a)>호밀(179kg/10a)의 순으로 나타났다.

Green Manuring Effect of Pure and Mixed Barley-Hairy Vetch on Rice Production (보리-헤어리베치 단파 및 혼파가 벼 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: The mixtures of legumes and non legumes can be an efficient tool to combine the benefit of the single species in the cover crop practice. However, there is a lack of information on how the species proportion may affect N accumulation and how this can influence the nitrogen use of subsequent rice production. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study barley and hairy vetch was selected as a green manure. The pure stands or mixtures with different seeding ratios was tested on green manure N accumulation and its following rice cultivation. Total aboveground biomass and N accumulation of mixture were higher compared to that of pure barley and hairy vetch. Among the mixtures, the highest aboveground biomass (8.07 Mg/ha) and N accumulation (131 kg/ha) was observed in B75H25 (barley 75% + hairy vetch 25%). The N accumulation of the mixture ranged from 99 kg/ha to 131 kg/ha which was much higher than amount of recommended (90 kg/ha) for rice. All mixture (barley 75%+hairy vetch 25%, barley 50%+hairy vetch 50%, barley 25%+hairy vetch 50%) produced 7-8% more rice yield than the conventional cultivation (NPK). The rice yield of in barley monocrop was 4% less than that of NPK. COLCLUSION(S): Adopting mixtures of barley and hairy vetch could be efficient strategy for rice production as an alternative of nitrogen fertilizer.

Differences of Soil Carbon by Green Manure Crops in Rotated Cropping System (윤작지 녹비작물종류에 따른 토양탄소 함량 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted to select winter-adaptable crop system or cropping systems for an enhanced carbon (C) fixation amount in plant biomass and soil. Single or mixed cropping systems of green manure crops, rye (R), triticale (TC), hairy vetch (HV), TC+HV, and control (fallow) were investigated during winter and spring. The amount and content of C and N in the above-ground biomass and soil C content by soil depth were measured under different green manure crops. The above-ground biomass was highest in TC+HV followed by R and TC with 664, 585, and 545 kg $10a^{-1}$, which exceeded the biomass of control by 181, 160, and 149%, respectively. The amount of C accumulation was higher in soil surface than deep soil. which was a similar pattern to the above-ground biomass. Therefore, green manure cropping in winter and spring seasons will be very helpful of improve soil organic matter.

Changes of Soil Physical Properties by Glomalin Concentration and Rice Yield using Different Green Manure Crops in Paddy (녹비작물 환원 시 Glomalin 함량에 따른 토양물리성 및 벼 수량 변화)

  • This experiment was conducted at Sinheung series (fine loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Fluvaquentic Endoaquepts) in 2007 to 2008 at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA, Suwon, Gyeonggi province, Korea. Three kinds of green manure crops (hairy vetch, barley, rye) incorporated in soil for rice cultivation. 6.3 kg N $10a^{-1}$, and3.2 kg $P_2O_5$ $10a^{-1}$ were applied to rye and barley plot before rice transplanting. Chemical fertilizers had not been applied to hairy vetch plot. Glomalin concentration, soil bulk density, and porosity were measured in soil from different green manure crops incorporation after rice harvesting in paddy. Soil bulk density and porosity after rice harvesting improved at surface soil of hairy vetch incorporation plot. Degree of water stable aggregates increased all green manure incorporation plots. Glomalin concentrations significantly increased at hairy vetch incorporation treatment. In barley plot, the concentration of glomalin increased at 10-20 soil depth. There were no differences relationship between soil carbon, and glomalin concentration, but relationship between soil aggregate stability, and glomalin concentration significantly positive under green manure crop-rice cropping system. Rice yield decreased at hairy vetch incorporation plot because of field lodging. We suggested that hairy vetch incorporation should be considered about application amount, and water management using rice cultivation because of soil properties changes.
