  • Recently seaweed polysaccharides have been extensively studied due to their various biological functions including antitumor, antiviral, anticoagulant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Although seaweed polysaccharides are known to possess numerous beneficial properties, their industrial applications have been limited due to the low inclusion efficiency and high cost of manufacturing involved in chemical hydrolysis. In addition, the smell of seaweed has been a limiting factor in its application in the food and cosmetic industries. Therefore, novel hydrolysis methods and the deodorization of seaweed are required if the extensive application of seaweed polysaccharides is to be seen. A number of studies have examined various seaweed polysaccharide-degrading enzymes, which have been isolated from marine microorganisms, and enzymatic hydrolysis processes have been investigated for the improvement of production yields and the bioefficacy of seaweed polysaccharides. This review is a synopsis on the properties of seaweed polysaccharides-degrading enzymes from marine microorganisms and their industrial applications. The review reveals the pressing need for more concentrated research on the development of new biological materials from seaweed.

  • This study aimed to evaluate seaweed polysaccharide extracts as a cosmetic material. To assess anti-microbial efficacy, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was treated with seaweed polysaccharide extracts and zones of inhibition were measured. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effect was confirmed in RAW 264.7cells, and seaweed polysaccharide extracts was applied to the dorsal skin of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats to evaluate single-dose toxicity. As a results, seaweed polysaccharide extracts did not exhibit cytotoxicity at concentrations up to $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ in skin fibroblasts. Furthermore, when S. aureus was treated with 1% seaweed polysaccharide extracts, clear zones of $1.52{\pm}0.34cm$ formed, confirming sufficient anti-microbial activity. When RAW 264.7 cells were treated with seaweed polysaccharide extracts extract, nitric oxide (NO) production decreased in a concentration-dependent manner and the production of inflammation-related cytokines, such as interleukin 1 beta ($IL1{\beta}$), tumor necrosis factor alpha ($TNF{\alpha}$), and prostaglandin E2(PGE2), decreased. When seaweed polysaccharide extracts extract was applied at various concentrations to rats, symptoms did not change for more than 14 d, and there was no change in body or organ weights. In conclusion we found that seaweed polysaccharide extracts is not cytotoxic and has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, it is suitable for use as a cosmetic material.

  • The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) has increased continuously in worldwide, but no cure have been discovered. The etiology of IBD may include various factors such as genetics, epigenetic, environment as well as host immune system. Among the environmental factors of IBD, diet heavily influences gut health, especially non-digestible dietary fiber can have a great impact on selective growth of beneficial gut microbiota called probiotics. Seaweeds have been consumed in Asia countries and are a rich source for dietary fiber. Accumulated data have suggested the possibility of utilizing seaweed derived oligosaccharides as prebiotics to prevent IBD and its recurrence. In this review, seaweed derived oligosaccharides such as fucoidan and laminarin regarding gut health and potential therapeutic tools for IBD will be discussed based on studies conducted in vitro and in vivo models.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the estimated availabilities and contents of major minerals (Ca, P, and Mg) in seven different seaweeds using the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) which could bind minerals. The estimated availability was calculated by subtracting the NDF-bound major mineral contents from the total major mineral contents of seaweeds. Average estimated availability of Ca, P, and Mg contents of seven seaweeds were 96.31, 73.24, and 96.79%, respectively. These results may suggest that seaweeds could be one of the good sources of major minerals for human nutrition because of their high average estimated availabilities of Ca, P, and Mg.

  • In this study, we found that it is necessary to use the relatively new resource from seaweed extracts to extract and process pulp and create a local brand that can contribute to the local fishermen, development of new bio material, establishment of natural infrastructure, and acquisition of foreign investment. This study's seaweed pulp separation process is very overwhelming as seaweed is a compound of glycoside and polysaccharide. Nevertheless, we intend to develop a purification process and introduce applied technology to explore a new applied technology of pulp process. Once this technology is fully developed and mass produced, it would contribute to greater exports and increasing income level for the local fishermen. The ultimate goal of this study is to gather technical data from the first and second years of application, apply seaweed pulp to increase bio effect, and develop new functional bio-plastic packaging material, raw material, and samples with special characteristics of high molecules.
