We investigated changes in the quality characteristics of soy sauce made using salts from deep ocean water; such salts are more economic to obtain than sun-dried salt. pH level and buffer action both decreased as fermentation proceeded. The content of the pure extract after 120 d of fermentation was 7.5%(w/w), and increased as fermentation proceeded. Total and amino acid nitrogen levels after 120 d of fermentation were 1.4% and 0.75%, respectively (both w/w). Of the free amino acids (179.8-315.7 mg%), glutamic acid was the most abundant, followed by alanine, lysine, and leucine. The glutamic acid/total free amino acid ratio was 21.0-23.2%. The content of essential amino acids was 78.0-142.3 mg%; this level increased as fermentation progressed.

Korean Deep ground sea-like water (KDSW) has a similar mineral composition with deep sea water. KDSW has demonstrated its usefulness and attracted in the medical fields. KDSW and Danasoo (desalted deep ground sea-like water) intake improve antioxidant, antidiabetic activity and immunity. Antioxidant activities of KDSW and Dnansoo were measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-l-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, superoxide dismutase-like activity (SODA) and photochemiluminescence (PCL). DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activities of KDSW and Danasoo were remarkably increased in a dose-dependent manner. Antioxidant activities of KDSW and Danasoo 85.32 and 14.02 nmol of ascorbic acid equivalent/ml KDSW and Danasoo, respectively, using the PCL method. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in macrophages RAW264.7 cells was inhibited up to 30% by treatment with Danasoo (20%). NO is synthesized by the enzyme of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and plays an important role tumor growth and angiogenesis. The anticancer effects of Danasoo on human gastric and lung cancer cells was performed by levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Danasoo significantly reduced iNOS expression of human gastric cancer (SNU-l) and lung carcinoma (A549). The serum glucose level was significantly reduced by Danasoo (20%) diet in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. These result suggest that KDSW has excellent biological activities and thus it has great potential as a source for natural health products.

This study summarized the results of the international ocean reanalysis intercomparison project. We introduced the characteristics of various ocean reanalysis systems and analyzed the assimilated performance on the typical eight oceanic variables (heat content, steric height, sea level, surface heat fluxes, mixed layer depth, subsurface salinity, depth of $20^{\circ}C$ isotherm, sea ice). In general, ensemble means show better estimations than those of any individual ocean reanalysis, but it depends on analyzed regions and variables. Among the eight oceanic variables, salinity and sea ice variabilities have large spreads among models. The deep sea, Southern Ocean, and coastal regions including western boundary current commonly appear as the areas with largest uncertainty between different objective analyses and assimilation models. We expect that intercomparison project for the ocean assimilation models independently operated in Korea should be processed, which allows us to join relevant international programs in the near future.

In order to understand the characteristics of the distribution and the nutrients of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water during summer to fall, temperature, salinity and nutrients have been investigated in the fifteen stations in the Yellow Sea. In september, the Changjiang diluted water with more than $20^{\circ}C$ distributed in the surface and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water distributed in the layer below 30m depth with less than $10^{\circ}C$. Specially, water mass with less than $5^{\circ}C$ in the layer below 50m depth expanded southward down to the north latitude of $35^{\circ}$ with expanding more to the coasts of China than to the coasts of Korea. The salinity of the cold water mass with $8^{\circ}C$ in the deep layer of more than 50m depth was relatively high as 33.5 psu and expanded northward forming fronts of temperature and salinity. The concentration of total inorganic nitrogen was two times higher in the cold water mass than in the surface water, which means that resolution and consumption were low due to cold temperature in the bottom layer. In conclusion, the cold water expanded southward down to the north latitude of $35^{\circ}$ by September and had high concentration of nutrients.

We investigate the availability of $CO_2$ ocean storage by means of chemical conversion of $CO_2$ to the dissolved inorganic carbon (mainly the bicarbonate ion) in seawater. The accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) technique, which is accelerating the natural $CO_2$ uptake process through the chemical conversion using limestone and seawater, was proposed as an alternative method for reducing energy-related $CO_2$ emission. The method presented in this paper is slightly different from the AWL method. It involves reacting $CO_2$ with seawater and quicklime obtained from alkaline wastes to produce the bicarbonate-rich solution over 100 times more than seawater, which could be released and diluted into the ocean. The released dense bicarbonate-enriched water mass could subside into the deeper layer because of the density flow, and could be sequestrated stably in the ocean.
In this research, we have developed a manufacturing process for seawater salt by horizontal spray drying technique using the deep ocean water and seaweed(sea tangle). Deep ocean water, strong acidic electrolyzed water and strong alkaline electrolyzed water were used as extraction solvent of seaweed. Sodium content in seaweed extract solution by strong alkaline electrolyzed water was 1.63(mg/g), which was 3.5 times lower than of seaweed extract by strong acidic electrolyzed water. Major mineral content(Na, K, Ca) in seawater salt by deep ocean water were higher than strong acidic electrolyzed water and strong alkaline electrolyzed water. On the contrary, Mg contents in seawater salt by deep ocean water were lower than strong acidic electrolyzed water and strong alkaline electrolyzed water. Based on the results of seawater salt production using seaweed, it is possible to make law-salt efficiently.
Microbial diversity in the 1500 m depth sea waters off the coast of Ulleung island of the East Sea, Korea, was investigated. Genomic DNAs were extracted directly from the marine microbes filtered through ultramembrane filters. Pyrosequencing of 16S rDNAs of these microbes resulted in 13,029 reads, of which uncultured bacteria consisted of 54.1%, alphaproteobacteria 23.4%, and gammaproteobacteria 22.3%. Other classes such as flavobacteria, actinobacteria, and epsilonproteobacteria were distributed within 0.2% of total reads. Among the cultivable bacteria, it was found that Rhodobacteraceae family of alphaproteobacteria, Alteromonadaceae, Halomonadaceae, and Piscirickettsiaceae families of gammaproteobacteria were mostly distributed in the deep-sea waters.

This paper shows the study on the design and another applications of the spray-freeze dryer for the production of valuable material powders. Powder production and handling has been an integral part of material extracting processing and pharmaceutical processing because of the wide use of oral dosage forms. There are a few commonly used powder preparation methods including mechanical milling, precipitaion, spray drying, freeze drying, and so on. In general, methods available for preparing inhalation powders are limited due to certain inhalation powder's sensitive nature to the processing environments. This is particularly true for preparing dry powder aerosols where the aerodynamic particle size($<5{\mu}m$) and the size distribution are pivotal. Supercritical fluid antisolvent and spray freeze drying have recently emerged as promising techniques for producing powders for use in microcapsulation. However, the aerosol applications of these powders are yet to be explored. The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of using spray freeze-dried valuable material powders for aerosolization.
