  • In the southeast sea of Korea, the cold water is concentrated in every summer, showing in abnormal oceanic conditions. Cold water occurred in the southeast sea is dominantly influenced by wind, which occurs when the south wind is continuously blowing for 3 to 7 days more. In this study, water temperature, wind speed and direction data of KMA, KHOA and KHNP, Chlorophyll-a of COMS/GOCI, GHRSST Level 4 SST of NASA, and red tide alert data of the National Institute of Fisheries Science were used to analyze the correlation between occurrence and change of the cold water and the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The upwelling cold water mass showed a characteristic of moving northward along the current and occurrence a high concentration of chlorophyll along the water mass. Also, when the warm current were strong, the characteristic of red tide showed a northward moving.

  • In this paper, we propose a hydrodynamic scene separation method for wave propagation from video imagery using autoencoder. In the coastal area, image analysis methods such as particle tracking and optical flow with video imagery are usually applied to measure ocean waves owing to some difficulties of direct wave observation using sensors. However, external factors such as ambient light and weather conditions considerably hamper accurate wave analysis in coastal video imagery. The proposed method extracts hydrodynamic scenes by separating only the wave motions through minimizing the effect of ambient light during wave propagation. We have visually confirmed that the separation of hydrodynamic scenes is reasonably well extracted from the ambient light and backgrounds in the two videos datasets acquired from real beach and wave flume experiments. In addition, the latent representation of the original video imagery obtained through the latent representation learning by the variational autoencoder was dominantly determined by ambient light and backgrounds, while the hydrodynamic scenes of wave propagation independently expressed well regardless of the external factors.

  • At low normal stress levels tensile strength of sand varies with either saturation or suction of soil in an up-and-down manner with a peak tensile strength that can occur at any degree of saturation. A theory that accurately predicts tensile strength of wet sand is presented. A closed form expression for tensile strength unifies tensile strength characteristics in all three water retention regimes: pendular, funicular, and capillary. Three parameters are employed in the theory; namely, the Internal friction angle (at low normal stress) ${\phi}_t$, the inverse value of the air-entry pressure ${\alpha}$, and the pore size spectrum parameter n. It is shown that the magnitude of peak tensile strength is dominantly controlled by the ${\alpha}$ parameter. The saturation at which peak tensile strength occurs only depends on the pore size spectrum parameter n.

  • This study was conducted to determine the efficiency of the distribution process of the abalone industry, that is, whether there is market dominance. In addition, it was intended to find out whether there is an asymmetric price transfer phenomenon between the distribution stage of the abalone industry. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the asymmetric price transition effect on the abalone price between producer and wholesale market was found to be positive. It means that the distribution structure is incomplete between the producer and the wholesale market and the abalone market is operating inefficiently. Second, as a result of estimating the market power between the producer and the wholesale market, the market power coefficient between the producer and the Hanam wholesale market, and the producer and the Incheon wholesale market were 0.0618 and 0.0735. Summarizing the analysis results, the abalone market has an asymmetric price transition between producer and wholesale markets, but the market dominance coefficient is relatively low. These results suggest that the asymmetry of price transition is mainly caused by market dominance, but can also be caused by other factors such as information asymmetry. In the future, in addition to the market dominance of the abalone market, it is judged that research on factors related to the asymmetry of price transition is necessary.

  • Typical water quality (WQ) parameters defined in the governing equation of the WQ model are the pollutant loads from atmosphere and watersheds, pollutant release rates from sediment, diffusion coefficient and reaction coefficient etc. The direct measurement of these parameters is very difficult as well as requires high cost. In this study, the pollutant budget equation including these parameters was used to construct the linear simultaneous equations. Based on these equations, the inverse problems were constructed and WQ parameter estimation method minimizing the sum of squared errors between the computed and observed amounts of the mass changes was suggested. WQ parameters, i.e., the atmospheric pollutant loads, sediment release rates, diffusion coefficients and reaction coefficient, were estimated using .this method by utilizing the vertical concentration profile data which has been observed in Cheonsu Bay and Ulsan Port. Values of the estimated parameters show a large temporal variation. However, this technique is persuasive in that the RHS (root mean square) error was less than $5.0\%$ of the observed value ranges and the agreement index was greater than 0.95.

  • In this study, the bottom tracking observation in the tidal entrance within Mokpo coast is performed using ADCP in order to estimate net flux of water mass and tidal prism. First of all, observed rawdata was conducted coordinate rotation considering rotation of the cross-section in order to derive the predominant velocity component. And observed rawdata is converted into Sigma coordinate with normalization and blank zone data near the water surface and bottom is interpolated using von-Karman equation. Net flux of water mass is calculated quantitively from the interpolated data, calculated results show that these represent well characteristic of ebb superiority at Mokpo coast as well as change of net flux of water mass with tide. Also, by complementing the definition of tidal prism proposed in past studies, the definition of tidal prism including tidal condition was re-established. Based on the new definition, tidal prism at a tidal entrance using bottom tracking data with ADCP is estimated quantitively for the first time domestically. The results are compared with those for results of previous study, calculated results were in good agreement with previous studies.

  • Influences of seasonal warming and cooling rates on the annual temperature patterns were analyzed based on the meteorological data from 13 weather stations in Busan Metropolitan Area(BMA), Korea during 1997~2014. BMA daily temperature time-series was generalized by Fourier analysis, which mathematically summarizes complex, regularly sampled periodic records, such as air temperature, into a limited number of major wave components. Local monthly warming and cooling rates of BMA were strongly governed by the ocean effect within the city. March($1.121^{\circ}C/month$) and November(-$1.564^{\circ}C/month$) were the two months, when the most rapid warming and cooling rates were observed, respectively during the study period. Geographically, spring warming rates of inland increased more rapidly compared to coastal areas due to weaker ocean effect. As a result, the annual maximum temperature was reached earlier in a location, where the annual temperature range was larger, and therefore its July mean temperature and continentality were higher. Interannual analyses based on average temperature data of all weather stations also showed that the annual maximum temperature tended to occur earlier as the city's July mean temperature increased. Percent area of impervious surfaces, an indicator of urbanization, was another contributor to temperature change rates of the city. Annual mean temperature was positively correlated with percent area of impervious surfaces, and the variations of monthly warming and cooling rates also increased with percent area of impervious surfaces.

  • A small hydro-power plant operated by cooling water discharged from the power plant is under construction. In this study, the flow characteristics of the effluent channel and the outfall coastal zone in which the facilities are constructed have been measured and analysed. The flow pattern is highly dependent on the effluent discharge and clearly classified as these typical areas; the upstream and downstream areas of the weir, and the outfall coastal zone. The discharge and the width of the channel in the upstream area of the weir are increased step by step, so the water level fluctuation is small. The flow overtopping the weir is rapidly changing and has highly vertical fluctuation patterns after hydraulic jump just below the weir. The flow pattern in the outfall zone is directed toward the seaward direction and the velocity is dominated by the tidal level fluctuation. The mean tidal range in this area is about 10% greater than that of the Tongyeong tidal gauging station and the wave effects are negligible because of the sheltering effects of this area.

  • Fish assemblage structure in a sheltered shallow water in the Southern Coast of Korea was examined monthly. Sampling was conducted in Doam Bay using a beam trawl between March 2001 and February 2001. A total of 53 fish species from 33 families were caught. Pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema), ponyfish (Leiognathus nuchalis) and yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius favimanus) were the most frequent species, comprised 67.4% of the total numbers captured. Snailfish (Liparis tanakai), yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus) and pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema) represented 50.8% of the total biomass. While total abundance (number of individuals) and biomass were high in autumn and winter, species richness (number of species) and diversity were high in spring. Cluster analysis, based on monthly abundance data of the 14 most frequent species, showed that the species were separated into three different groups. Group A composed of pinkgray goby, yellowfin goby, robust tonguefish (Cynoglossus robustus) and scaly hairfin anchovy (Setipinna taty), which were year-round residents, and devil flathead (Onigocia spinosa), Red dragonet (Repomucenus lunatus) and ponyfish, which were abundant in autumn, group B surmullet (Upeneus japonicus), hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) and gaff-topsail goby (Cryptocentrus filifer), which were abundant in summer, and group C grassfish (Liparis tanakai), spotted velvefish (Erisphex pottii), chameleon goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus) and Richardson dragonet (Repomucenus richardsonii), which were abundant in winter and spring. A seasonal homogeneity of fish assemblage indicates that overall fish assemblage in Dom Bay is largely controlled by year-round residents.

  • In this study, wave pressure of short-period gravity waves and tsunami acting on the upright section of the horizontal-slit type caisson placed on the impermeable or permeable seabed, which is a well-known permeable breakwater with a good wave controlling ability, are investigated via numerical simulations. Further, the permeable seabed was modeled as the porous media with porosity of 0.4. Using the numerical results, the effects of the seabed conditions on the wave pressure on the front wall and inside wall of the chamber have been studied. In the numerical simulations, short-period gravity waves and tsunami(solitary wave or bore) with the same amplitude to the gravity wave are considered. A numerical wave tank is used, which is able to consider a gas-liquid two-phase flow in the same calculation zone. Numerical results show that the wave pressure of the tsunami was 3~5 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the front wall and it was 2~4 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the inner wall.
