  • In this paper, the attitude and orbit control subsystem technology of new GEO communication and observation satellite using Sun sensors are introduced and analyzed. COMS is new GEO communication and Earth observation satellite based on EUROSTAR 3000 space bus technology. The attitude and orbit control subsystem of COMS adopts a configuration using three BASS and three LIASS Sun sensors to acquire the attitude error information in the specific reference frames. These Sun sensors are used to acquire Sun direction and to control the spacecraft to keep the relative attitude with respect to a reference Sun direction in both transfer and operational orbits. In this paper, the mathematical models of BASS and LIASS are described as well as their operational implementation in the flight software.

  • The diffuse attenuation coefficient for down-welling irradiance $K_d({\lambda})$, which is the propagation of down-welling irradiance at wavelength ${\lambda}$ from surface to a depth (z) in the ocean, and underwater visibility are important optical parameters for ocean studies. There have been several studies on $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the world, but only a few studies have focused on these properties in the Korean sea. Therefore, in the present study, we studied $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the coastal area of the Yellow Sea, and developed $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms for ocean color satellite sensor. For this research we conducted a field campaign around the Yellow Sea from $19{\sim}22$ September, 2006 and there we obtained a set of ocean optical and environmental data. From these datasets the $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms were empirically derived and compared with the existing NASA SeaWiFS $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and NRL (Naval Research Laboratory) underwater visibility algorithm. Such comparisons over a turbid area showed small difference in the $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and constants of our result for underwater visibility algorithm showed slightly higher values.

  • In this study, the technical characteristics of geosynchronous multi-mission satellites are investigated, compared to communication satellites. Geosynchronous meteorological satellites, whose imaging data is normally shared with the international society, have large coverage for monitoring and data service. Also the higher pointing accuracy is requested to keep the spatial resolution of 1-4km, compared to those of communication satellites. Cryogenic thermal control is needed for the better performance of IR sensors and the contamination protection of optical parts should be considered. On the other hands, for the successful development of the multi-mission satellite COMS, which will be launched in 2008, the special features of attitude control, electrical power, thermal control and mechanism are investigated.

  • The reflectance observed in the visible channels of a geostationary meteorological satellite can be used to calculate the amount of cloud by comparing the reflectance with the observed solar radiation data at the ground. Using this, the solar radiation arriving at the surface can be estimated. This study used the Meteorological Imager (MI) reflectance observed at a wavelength of 675 nm and the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) reflectance observed at similar wavelengths of 660 and 680 nm. Cloudy days during a typhoon and sunny days with little cloud cover were compared using observation data from the geostationary satellite. Pixels that had more than 40% reflectance in the satellite images showed less than 0.3 of the cloud index and blocked more than 70% of the solar energy. Pixels that showed less than 15% reflectance showed more than 0.9 of the cloud index and let through more than 90% of the solar energy to the surface. The calculated daily accumulated solar radiation was compared with the observed daily accumulated solar radiation in 22 observatories of the Korean Meteorological Administration. The values calculated for the COMS and MTSAT MI sensors were smaller than the observation and showed low correlations of 0.94 and 0.93, respectively, which were smaller than the 0.96 correlation coefficient calculated for the GOCI sensor. The RMSEs of MTSAT, COMS MI and GOCI calculation results showed 2.21, 2.09, 2.02 MJ/$m^2$ in order. Comparison of the calculated daily accumulated results from the GOCI sensor with the observed data on the ground gave correlations and RMSEs for cloudy and sunny days of 0.96 and 0.86, and 1.82 MJ/$m^2$ and 2.27 MJ/$m^2$, respectively, indicating a slightly higher correlation for cloudy days. Compared to the meteorological imager, the geostationary ocean color imager in the COMS satellite has limited observation time and observation is not continuous. However, it has the advantage of providing high resolution so that it too can be useful for solar energy analysis.

  • It is desired to use a domestically manufactured ocean data buoy for the long-term operational ocean monitoring. The ocean data buoy manufacturing technology was introduced through the research cooperation with the Qingkong University of Taiwan. The introduced ocean data buoy system was further expanded and improved for more efficient application for the marine environmental monitoring in Korea. The size of the ocean data buoy is 2.5 m in diameter, which is smaller compared to the NOAA's 3.0 m discus buoy to allow easy land transportation and ocean deployment as well. From the dynamic response test of the buoy carried out numerically, it was shown that the measurement of waves with period greater than 4 seconds is acceptable. The measurement and control system of the data buoy were improved to increase the number of measuring parameters, to reduce power consumption and to enhance better data analysis and management. Each component of the improved data buoy system was described in detail in this paper. Water quality sensors of water temperature, salinity, DO, pH and turbidity were added to the system in addition to the marine meteorological sensors of wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity, air pressure and wave. Inmarsat satellite communication system is used for the real-time data telemetry from the buoy deployed offshore. A field performance test of the improved and domestically manufactured buoy was carried out for a month at the open sea off Pohang together with DatawelI's Wave-rider buoy to compare the wave data. The results of the test were satisfactory.
