On reducing the computing time of EFDC hydrodynamic model (EFDC 해수유동모형의 계산시간 효율화)

  • The EFDC model has been simplified to enhance the computing performance in hydrodynamic modeling. Water quality module and unnecessary conditional statements were deleted in subroutine list and memory allocation. The performance of the enhanced model (EFDC-E) was checked by applying EFDC and EFDC-E models to simulating the tidal flow in Mokpo coastal zone. Both two-dimensional models and threedimensional models have been applied and compared. Three-dimensional models showed better simulation results agreeing with observed currents than two-dimensional models. The simulation results of EFDC-E model gave good results agreeing with the simulation results of EFDC model and the observed data. The computing speed of EFDC-E model is improved 3 times faster than that of EFDC model in modeling hydrodynamic flow for real time of 3 days in both 2-dimensional modeling and 3-dimensional modeling. The EFDC-E model can be used widely for hydrodynamic modeling because of improved simulation speed.

  • Numerical models have been widely used to understand the structure of coastal currents and the transport mechanisms in regard to the fate of pollutants. This study focuses on the development of a three-dimensional model of coastal circulation and mass transport. The model was used to calculate coastal currents and temperature distributions of the thermal plume discharged from a power plant. The model results were compared with field-observed data. They showed the relatively good agreements with the data. The model can be used to estimate the currents and its mass transport in coastal waters.

  • To evaluate the tidal flow around the transmission type harbour structures, the numerical models considering hydraulic resistance are used. The traditional governing equations of depth-integratef hydrodynamics are modified by using of the drag force term. As a numerical model to evaluate the rate of tidal exchange, the Random-walk method is used. The models are applied in a design of the pile-supported pier structures in Busan harbour site, Korea, where the flow speed and the tidal exchange are more promotive than the case of non-transmission structure. The developed model will be applied usefully to design the transmission type structure in the ocean space.

  • The concentration of cohesive suspended sediment is determined by the circulation of water and the material dispersion. The equations of the two-dimensional, depth-integrated dispersive transport are the Reynolds equation, continuity equation, and advection-dispersion equation based on the Fick's law. A finite difference method has been applied to two models of circulation and dispersion transport. The circulation model is solved by the explicit scheme and the dispersion transport model is solved by multi-operational scheme. It is investigated wheter advective terms are included when the equation of circulation is applied to the model. For advection-dispersion equation, it was also investigated about variations of suspended sediment concentration with respect to the critical shear stresses.

  • A hydrodynamic numerical model, ESCORT, which enables wetting-and-drying simulation, is developed. The model is verified by applying it at the Mokpo coastal zone together with the MIKE21 model. This paper deals in only 2-dimensional aspects remaining 3-dimensional function for further research. To begin with, MIKE21 model is applied at the whole area where MIKE21 had been applied several times to produce boundary conditions for the main area. Unlike the whole area of uniform grid, main area adopts telescoping grid for ESCORT model and nested grid for MIKE21 model. The results of both model show not only good agreement for the values of water depth and tidal velocity between computed and observed ones, but also plausible wetting-and-drying simulation. However, ESCORT model needs some improvement of efficiency.

  • 광양만의 해수교환은 주로 여수해만을 통해 이루어지고, 만의 동측에는 노량수로를 통해 진주만으로의 해수교환이 일어나고 있으며, 만의 북측에는 섬진강을 끼고 있다. 광양항 건설 전 만내의 수심은 약 10 m 이내로 얕았으며, 만의 입구인 여수해만과 노량수로에서의 수심은 약 20 m 이상이었다. 광양만은 1982년 광양제철소의 건설을 시점으로 하여 광양항의 확장 개발, 폐기물처리장 건설 등으로 인한 매립이 진행되었다. 특히, 섬진강 하구는 광양만 개발 전에는 넓은 조간대 퇴적층의 발달로 다양한 생태계환경을 유지하고 있었으나, 광양항 건설 및 하구에서 모래 준설 등으로 인해 근래에 와서는 해수의 역류가 심각한 상태이다. 1982년 광양제철소 건설이후 계속적으로 광양만을 개발함으로써 해양환경에 큰 변화가 발생하였다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 광양만 개발 전·후의 조석 및 해수유동의 변화특성을 해석하기 위해 조석 및 조류에 대한 현장관측과 3차원 해수유동 수치모형실험을 수행한 후 남해도를 둘러싸고 있는 광양만, 진주만 등의 조석 및 조류의 변동특성을 해석하였다. 광양만 개발 전·후의 해수유동의 변동특성을 해석하기 위해 김 등(1999)에 의해 개발된 3차원 layer·level 혼성 해수유동 모델을 광양만, 진주만을 포함하는 남해도 주변해역에 적용하여 30일간의 수치계산결과를 이용하여 해수유동의 변동특성을 해석하였다. 모델에서 격자간격은 동서-남북방향 동일하게 200 m, 시간간격은 20 sec, 계산영역은 동서방향으로 52 km, 남북방향으로 65 km인 260×325 격자체계로 구성 운영하였다. 외해 개방경계에서 조위는 수로국에서 관측한 조위와 본 연구에서 관측한 조위를 보간하여 사용하였다. 광양만 개발전·후의 조류의 변동특성을 수치해석한 결과 여수해만에서는 광만만 개발전이 개발 후보다 유속이 강하게 나타났으나, 노량수로에서는 개발 후가 개발전보다 유속이 훨씬 강하게 나타났다. 이와 같은 현상은 광양만 개발로 광양만으로 유입되는 조량이 감소함으로 인해 여수해만에서는 유속이 감소한 것으로 생각된다. 노량수로에서 개발 후가 개발전보다 유속이 증가한 것은 여수해만을 통해 유입한 해수가 개발 후에는 광양만의 해수면적 감소로 광양만의 서측으로 유입하는 조량이 감소한 반면에 광양만의 북측(섬진강 하구) 또는 동측(노량수로)으로 유입하는 조량이 많기 때문인 것으로 사료된다.

Tidal Flat Simulation Characteristics of the Hydrodynamic Models (해수유동모형의 조간대 모의 특성)

  • EFDC, ESCORT and MIKE21 models are applied at the Gomso Bay to investigate each models' facilities of tidal flat simulation. Comparisons with observation data show that all models simulate hydrodynamic phenomena and tidal flat well. CPU time and WCM are examined to evaluate the efficiency of the models, and the effects of flooding/drying depth and bottom friction are examined to analyze models' facilities of simulating tidal flat. The EFDC model is considered to be fairly good in accuracy, stability and applicability, it is, however, poor in efficiency and its complexity. While the ESCORT model is superior to the EFDC in simulation of tidal flat, it is inferior to the EFDC in CPU time and simulation of bottom friction. The MIKE21 model is excellent in efficiency, but some numerical noise would be detected at low water, not permitting correction of the model.

3차원 연안해수유동 수치모형의 개발

  • 본 연구에서는 자유수면과 성층효과를 고려한 3차원 연안해수유동 수치모형을 개발하였다. 수치모형은 수심방향에 대해서 정규화된 좌표(c-coordinate)를 사용하며, 시간적분방법으로는 반음해법(semi-implicit)을 사용하여 계산시간의 효율성을 도모하였으며, 모드분리개념을 도입하여 내역항(Internal mode)에 대해서는 양해법을 사용하였으며, 외역항(External mode)은 수평방향 운동방정식과 연속방정식의 차분식으로부터 얻은 Poisson형태의 타도형 차분방정식을 Point-SOR법에 의하여 해석하였다. A Three-Dimensional Numerical Model of Circulation and Heat Transport in Coastal Region (연안 해수유동 및 온배수 확산에 관한 3차원 수치모형)

  • This paper is concerned with the development of a three-dimensional numerical model for coastal circulation and heat transport with improved prediction ability. The model uses fully nonlinear, time-dependent three-dimensional, $\sigma$-transformed equations of motion and equation of heat transport The model was verified with experimental data for wind-driven current in a one-dimensional channel and thermal jets flowing into stagnant waters and applied for unsteady flow induced by tide and thermal jets in coastal waters around Kori nuclear power plant. The model results were in good agreements with experimental data sets for wind-driven current and thermal jet, and field observed data sets in coastal waters. This study has shown that the $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is applicable to various coastal conditions without any modification of turbulence constants.
