  • One of the major characteristics of the swell-like high waves, which occur in the East Sea mostly in winter with large height and long period, is its suddenness associated with the rapid development of high waves from a calm state of sea. To represent such suddenness, in this study, the term sudden high waves is introduced. To propose the criterion of sudden high waves, comparisons were made between the wave measurement data at Gangneung and Wangdolcho for eight years from 2005 and the record of marine accidents and property damage on the coast of Gangwon-do Province and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province during the same period. It was found that most of the accidents occurred when ${\Delta}(H^2L)/{\Delta}t$ was approximately greater than the top 20% or $88.6m^3/hr$, which is therefore proposed as the criterion of sudden high waves. The used variable represents the rate of increase of the wave energy in one wavelength, including not only height and period but also suddenness of high waves.

  • Our aim was to simulate ocean waves in a small-size wave flume and observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To precisely visualize the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. Spectral analysis was performed of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body substantially differed when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body suddenly appeared at 0.391 Hz as the wave period was increased.

  • The scour risk assessment was conducted for ultimate limit state of newly developed penta pod suction bucket support structures for a 5.5 MW offshore wind turbine. The hazard was found by using an empirical formula for scour depth suitable for considering marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant wave period, and current velocity. The scour fragility curve was calculated by using allowable bearing capacity criteria of suction foundation. The scour risk was assessed by combining the scour hazard and the scour fragility.

  • In recent years, diversified demand for marine utilization has been increasing not only through the development projects for the utilization of the conventional coastal zone but also by the development of marine leisure sports and marine energy. It is very important to understand the characteristics of blue for safe and economical utilization of the ocean. Using the observed wave data, we derive the wave parameters to represent the irregular sea state proposed in the previous studies and examine the relationship between them to confirm the characteristics of the ocean wave.

  • Using the wave data by typhoons LEE, VERA, THELMA which gave great damages in the Korean penisula, the significant waves based on zero-up & down crossing and Tucker-Draper method are compared with those from the wave energy spectrum. And the histograms of individual waves obtained from zero-up crossing method are presented and compared with the Rayleigh, Weibull, Gluhovski, Ibrageemov and Goda distributions, and also the Chi-square goodness of fit test is applied to each theoretical distributions. It is shown that the significant wave heights by zero-up crossing method are very well agreed to those by energy spectrum method. The wave heights are found to well follow the Rayleigh and Goda distributions by the Chi-square test.

  • Ships in a seaway will encounter dangerous situation, such as slamming, stranding, and capsizing. The number of capsizing is small, but the loss due to them is very large from the viewpoint of human life, property, and the environmental pollution. The number of capsizing of fishing vessels is about 62% of total number of capsizing, and the half of them is originated from the operational mistake in a seaway. So the dynamics and the capsizing phenomena are to be studied, and the guide for the safe operation of a fishing vessel in a seaway are to be specified. The hydrodynamic forces consist of radiation forces (which are due to the motion of a ship), Froude-Krylov forces (which is due to the incoming waves), and diffraction forces (which is due to the wave and ship interaction). These forces are calculated by well-known strip method. Using the calculated forces, the motion of a ship in a regular sea is obtained. In the real seaway, the waves are very irregular, therefore the statistical analysis is very helpful. In this paper, using the results of the motion in a regular seaway and the wave spectrum, the motion in a irregular seaway are obtained and analyzed.

  • The sea of the Korean peninsula has undergone various marine changes, including naval vessels, naval operational aircrafts, air force fighters, coastal airports and airfields. In particular, salt directly affected by the marine environment, equipment operating under a high temperature / high speed as the gas turbine is the high temperature corrosion (Hot Corrosion) caused by sulfur components and salinity of the fuel used. When the height of the demister (air intake) is less than 7 m, the salinity of the salt entering the sea increases and the corrosion increases rapidly. In addition, the weapon systems operating in the East Sea than in the West Sea showed a 17% increase in the corrosion rate due to the relatively high salinity scattered by saline, wind, and wave. In order to minimize the salinity inflow, it should be operated at more than 13 m from the sea to minimize rapid hot corrosion.

  • For determination of the design wave, a method of estimating the design wind speed at sea from the wind records at the nearby weather stations on land is proposed. Along the West Coast, the design wind speed are shown to have two main directions; namely, N through W, and WSW through S. Through the analysis of weather maps, fetches for the main wind directions along the West Coast are determined. The wind speeds at sea are found to have 0.8~0.9 times the wind speed at the stations on land for U$\geq$20m/s. The West Coast may be divided into three regions for which fetches are determind uniquely. Design waves with return period of 100 years are determined by the revised S.M..B. method along the West Coast, and show the deep water significant wave heights of 4.4~8.3 meters with wave periods of 8.9~12.0 seconds.
