  • Shipwaves can cause beach erosion, seawall destruction and difficulty of cargo working due to rolling of ship. In addition, high speed operation of motor boat and passenger ship jeopardize sea bathers and anglers' safety. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of shipwaves which occurred and propagated in shallow water experimentally and theoretically. Shipwaves which occurred and propagated in shallow water depth represent large wave height increase.

  • On-site measurement of ship wave has been carried out in the vicinity of Mokpo inner harbour. The wave data were collected and logged 5Hz by the ultrasonic instrument for 12hour on May 17, 2006. The number of data was 216,000 and the maximum wave height was 81.41cm in normal weather condition. It was found that the wave conditions in this water area are predominantly affected by the ship-generated waved under normal condition. By comparing with the wind-generated waves in the open region which were irregular but with dominant directional characteristics, the existing harbor wave field was much more complex.

  • Damages such as beach erosion, seawall destruction and difficulty of cargo working due to rolling of ship result from shipwave. In addition, high speed operations of motor boat and passenger ship respectively jeopardize sea bathers and anglers' safety. In general, shipwaves in shallow water have worse effect on coastal facilities and working people there than those in deepwater. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of shipwaves which occurred and propagated in shallowwater experimentally and theoretically.

  • The characteristics of ship induced waves caused by navigation become widely different from both ship's speed and water depth condition. The ship induced waves specially generated in coastwise routes frequently give rise to call unforeseen danger for swimmers and small boats as well as shoreline erosion or sea wall destruction in coastal zones. The main concern of ship induced wave study until now is either how to reduce ship resistance or how to manoeuvre the ship safely under a constant water depth in the view point of shipbuilding engineers. Moreover, due to the trends for appearance of the high speed ships at the shallow coastal water, we are confronted with the danger of damages from those ship induced waves. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the development of ship induced waves and the influence of their deformation effects according to its propagation ray. In present study, in order to predict the development of the ship induced waves and their propagation under the conditions of complicate and variable shallow water depth with varying ship's speed, we constructed a computer model using Boussinesq equation with a fixed coordinate system and verified the model results by comparison with experimental results. Additionally, the model was applied under the variable water depth based on actual passage and we then confirmed the importance of the variable water depth consideration.

  • Using the commercial CFD code FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$ which has an implicit General Moving Object (GMO) method, the ship-induced wave has been simulated. In the implicit GMO method of the FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$, a rigid body's motion which is either user-prescribed (prescribed motion) or dynamically coupled to fluid flow (coupled motion) can be computed with six degrees of freedom (DOF). The simulated horizontal wave patterns are agree with the wave patterns represented by depth Froude number. The model has been well-simulated to generate the depth-dependent wave transformation in comparison of uniform depth case to complicated depth case. Additionally, it shows that ship-induced waves have been reasonably generated by two ships passing each other and by a ship moving in a curve. Therefore, it is suggested that the FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$ model calibrated with observed data should provide more accurate prediction for the ship-induced wave in a certain fairway or harbor.

  • Kelvin's (1887) theory that predicts position of ship wave crest can be applied only in deep water. Havelock's (1907) theory that predicts cusp locus angle can be applied in whole water depths but cannot predict the position of ship wave crest. In this study, using the linear dispersion fully, we develop the equations to predict ship wave crest in whole water depths and, using the developed equations, we predict cusp locus angle. We simulate ship wave propagation using FLOW-3D in the condition of Johnson's (1985) hydraulic experiment and find that the cusp locus angles predicted by the present theory are close to numerical results of FLOW-3D and hydraulic experimental data. We also simulate for various conditions and compare numerical results of distances between adjacent wave crests and values predicted by the present theory. For Froude number less than unity, the numerical results are close to the values predicted by the theory. For Froude number greater than unity, the constant value of $C_1$ which determines the distance between the ship and the first ship wave crest is almost equal to zero and the numerical results of distances between adjacent ship waves excluding the first ship are close to the values predicted by the theory.

  • Choosing initial codevectors in the LBG algorithm controls the performance of a codebook, because it only guarantees a locally optimal codebook. In this paper, we propose the decision method of initial codevectors by a decision radius which takes for feature vectors DC, low frequency, medium frequency and high frequency terms generated by a DCT. The more the decision radius is increased in order to decide initial codevectors, the more the number of membership vectors and the standard deviation for distance among the initial codevectors are increased. To obtain improved performance for a codebook, the decision radius for DC term is required above 0.9 of the membership rate and those for low frequency, medium frequency and high frequency terms under 0.6 of it.

  • In the narrow water channel, which has been frequently deployed in the artificial canal in the South Korea due to the lack of available land, solitary wave type ship induced waves can occur. In order to test this hypothetical view, we carried out the numerical simulation. Numerical model consists of Navier-Stokes Equations and VOF, and the verification is implemented using the data by PIANC (1987) and the analytical model derived in this study. It was shown that numerically simulated front wave height are much larger than the one by PIANC (1987), and the fluctuation of free surface near the channel bank persists much longer (around 20s). For the case of stern waves, numerically simulated wave height are somewhat smaller than the data by PIANC (1987). These results seriously deviates from the general characteristics of ship induced waves observed in the wide water channels, and leads us to conclude that ship induced waves is severely affected by the width of water channel. It was also shown that the currents from the channel banks toward a ship, and currents from the ship toward the channel banks are alternatively occurring due to reflection at the channel banks. The velocity of currents reaches its maximum at 0.90 m/s, and these values are sustained through the entire depth. which implies that severe scourings at the channel bottom can be underway.
