This study aims at calculating berth length required of the given volume of containers. For this, unlike previous studies assuming 300,000 TEU per berth as the capacity of a berth, this study attempts to apply more realistic situation such as the distribution of vessel size, lifts per vessel, berth time by vessel size, and average berth occupancy ratio. the result are compared with that of Pusan New port planning.
This paper focuses on measuring the efficiency of container yards in container terminals in Busan and Gwangyang using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. It analyses the relative efficiency of 11 container terminals based on the data for the period between 2006 and 2009 to offer a fresh perspective. The applied framework assumes inputs to be container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors and output as container transshipment volume. Through the analysis, the differences between the impact of using of container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors, top handler & reach stacker on container yard efficiency are measured. Moreover, the associations between the three input factors are analyzed as well. This paper also employs heteroscedastic Tobit model to show the impact of explanatory variables on container yard efficiencies. I took into consideration the strategies for operation of container cranes, transtainer cranes and yard tractors in container yard.
Even after the improvement in 2019, UNCTAD's Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI), which evaluates the performance of the global container port market, has limited use. In particular, since the liner shipping connectivity index evaluates the performance based only on the distance of the relationship, the performance index combining the port attractiveness of calling would be more efficient. This study used the modified Huff model, the hub-authority algorithm and the eigenvector centrality of social network analysis, and correlation analysis for 2007, 2017, and 2019 data of Ocean-Commerce, Japan. The findings are as follows: Firstly, the port attractiveness of calling and the overall performance of the port did not always match. However, according to the analysis of the attractiveness of a port calling, Busan remained within the top 10. Still, the attractiveness among other Korean ports improved slowly from the low level during the study period. Secondly, Global container ports are generally specialized for long-term specialized inbound and outbound ports by the route and grow while maintaining professionalism throughout the entire period. The Korean ports continue to change roles from analysis period to period. Lastly, the volume of cargo by period and the extended port connectivity index (EPCI) presented in this study showed a correlation from 0.77 to 0.85. Even though the Atlantic data is excluded from the analysis and the ship's operable capacity is used instead of the port throughput volume, it shows a high correlation. The study result would help evaluate and analyze global ports. According to the study, Korean ports need a long-term strategy to improve performance while maintaining professionalism. In order to maintain and develop the port's desirable role, it is necessary to utilize cooperation and partnerships with the complimentary port and attract shipping companies' services calling to the complementary port. Although this study carried out a complex analysis using a lot of data and methodologies for an extended period, it is necessary to conduct a study covering ports around the world, a long-term panel analysis, and a scientific parameter estimation study of the attractiveness analysis.
Recently, South korea is driving forward the strategy concerning of the logistics center of northeast asia aggressively on the purpose of promoting Busan port & Gwangyang port to the hub-port of northeast asia, In that situation, it is significant that the meaning, construction connecting between south and north railway. Namely, That is the reason why Busan port is satisfied with the combined transport system of not only marine transportation but also railway transportation completely, However, the research and policy is only focused on the connection of north-south railway so far. The ability of Buans railway equipment as the actual role of origin-destination point of TKR(Trans Korean Railway), was not reviewed. Therefore, this research is shown the problem and reality of the railway transport concerning the centralization of Busan port, and the capacity of Busan port railway facility regarding the increase of future container quantity is reviewed and analyzed Moreover, the object, shown the importance of facility expansion such as Gungbu Trans Express between Daegu and Busan and the improvement scheme for railway transportation activation through the analysis of society cost and the logistics cost of the ability of railway facility, is set up.
This paper focuses measuring the efficiency of container yards on container terminals in Busan (Gasungdae, Shinsundae, Gamman, New Gamman, Uam, Gamchon, PNC) and Gwangyang(GICT, KEC, Dongbu, KIT) using Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) approach. Container terminals in Busan and Gwangyang play an important role in the region's economic development. The results show that Shinsundae was an efficient DMU during the period of 2007 to 2009, while Gamman, New Gamman and PNC were efficient terminals in 2009. The very inefficient terminals were shown to be GICT, KEC, Dongbu and KIT. GICT(2009), KEC(2009), Dongbu(2008-2009), KIT(2009) on Gwangyang Port were found to be relatively the inefficient terminals in terms of the returns to scale. This study also finds that the efficiency of Shinsundae terminal was so high as to be abel to keep its efficiency in spite of the additional increase of the inputs from 2007 to 2009. Gamman terminal was in the decreasing returns to scale in 2009, while the other terminals were in the increasing returns to scale. It means that we are able to improve the efficiency of the Gamman terminal with increasing returns to scale through enlarging the scale.
The aim of this paper is to draw out the connection strategies between port and city functions. The case study was made on the port city of Incheon using Multidimensional Statistics(MDS) which groups 18 port cities targeted into two or more categories. The used factors inserted into the methodology were container cargo volumes, population, area of the city, number of liner calling, Relative Concentration Index(RCI). As results, Yokohama was identified as the best port city which can possibly give the meaningful guideline to Incheon port. The port-city is superior to that of Incheon in the area of port hinterland and varieties of business models. The port-city also has consistent policies on improvement of port and city functions.

As the marine environment is becoming more important with growing demand for the marine transport due to the globalization, some advanced ports have made efforts to establish Green Port to protect the marine environment. The Korean ports as the world's fifth ranked country have also made efforts to establish Green Port but most efforts are focused on hardware aspects such as renewable energy generation, installation of AMP and fuel conversion of port facilities. The purpose of this study is to develop Eco-Ship assessment scheme for Green Port in a software aspect and present measures to improve global green-competitiveness of Korean ports through diversification of their efforts for Green Port.
Recently, the logistics industry in Asia is growing rapidly mostly with Chinese economic development. A variety of studies have been carried out to reduce the logistic cost under the situation that the global freight traffic continues to increasing. The Short Sea Shipping(SSS) system, a multi modal transport system centered around coastal shipping to realize high value-added logistics, achieved considerable success in EU. To implement the SSS system in Korea, it is necessary to develop the various essential technologies related to development of efficient ships and port facilities, including equipment for loading and unloading containers, operating and managing systems for freight terminals and technologies for tracking and securing containers. The present paper focuses on the survey of the current essential technologies available for implementation of the SSS system and suggests the direction of future development in the technologies.

In this paper, the reduction of CO₂ gas emission and exhaust gas emission by using the shift of coastal transport from land transport for import-export container cargo was proposed. At first, the domestic CO₂ gas emission, exhaust gas emission and the transportation of import-export container cargo are investigated. And also, we investigated the reduction of CO₂ gas emission and exhaust gas emission by the shift of coastal transport from land transport for the transportation of import-export container cargo between Kyongin area and Pusan Port. Finally, the change of NOx gas emission due to the change of the share of coastal transportation and using the 320TEU container ship are investigated. The research results show that the shift of coastal transport from land transport was effective to reduce the CO₂ gas emission and exhaust gas emission.
A rapid growth of interregional trade between China and Korea requires new development and expansion of ports. Currently, there is no rail-ferry system between China and Korea, however, a rapid growth of car-ferry industry shows possibilities. Several candidate cities and regions in East part of China and West part of Korea are selected. We identified times in clearance and station-to-station services as major benefits. We compared three transport modes including candidate cities and regions: container ships, car-ferry and rail-ferry. We used AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) as an evaluation method to select most competitive rail-ferry routes between two countries. We also used 7-point Likert scales to find out bottlenecks and factors to introduce rail-ferry services as other questionnaires. As a result, Rail Ferry System(RFS) is a little expensive due to wagon loading efficiency in cargo hold of the ship compared to Car Ferry System or Liner Shipping System. But RFS is recommendable in case of Block Train transport between Korea and EU area by may of TCR and TSR comparing Car Ferry System, because it can reduce total transport cost and connecting procedure at border lines of passing countries.
