Recently Incheon Port and Pyeongtak·Dangjin Port called as Capital Region Ports have enjoyed ever-increasing cargo volumes. However, there is a lack of research on this region while plenty of outputs were suggested on mega hub and regional hub ports in terms of shipping companies and stakeholders' port choice criteria. To identify and evaluate the Capital Region Ports, this paper identifies the factors and sub-components influencing their port choice and presents a structure for evaluating them. Based on the literature related to port selection and competition, a regional survey employed Factor Analysis to reveal that 'port facility and link', 'cost and service', 'port hinterland' and 'information service and port operation policy' are the determining factors in these regions. From the overall evaluation using Fuzzy Theory, Port of Incheon Port obtained high score compare to that of Port of Pyeongtak Dangjin.

Due to the rapid growth of Chinese ports, currently, research for the improvement of competitiveness of Busan port have been intensively studied. These research have mostly evaluated or analyzed competitiveness of ports, and then, based on results of analysis, have suggested some strategies for enhancing competitiveness of Busan port. However. although implications of these previous studies are practically available to build policies for Busan port, basic studies such as identification of port competitiveness( or port selection) related factors for reasonable evaluation and analysis which have contributions in academic area have been very rare. The primary objective of this study is to investigate port selection criteria, based on empirical data Especially, in this study, we classify internal /external factors, and present importances of external factors that have yet to be empirically identified in previous studies.

Many studies have identified the determinants of shippers' selection of ports, and of these, a number have repetitively cited major elements. However, different researchers came up with somewhat different research results depending on the position and preference of research targets. Accordingly, to deduce the determinants of shippers' selection of Gwangyang Port, appropriate research and analysis is required in addition to literature study. This study first deduced from previous studies the determinants that have influence on shippers when selecting a port and positively analyzed the effects of those determinants on the shippers using Gwangyang Port. In this regard, whether shippers using Gwangyang Port have continuously used the port was set as a dependent variable, and port service, port facilities, location of ports, port costs, and other determinants for port selection deduced in the previous studies were set as independent variables. This study's analysis finds shippers using Gwangyang Port are all influenced by the elements of port service, port facilities, location of ports, and port costs in their selection of Gwangyang Port. Their degree of importance is in the order of port costs, location of ports, port service and port facilities. This indicates that shippers consider port costs and location of ports more important than port facilities in their selection of a port.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the new strategies for strengthening the competi tiveness of Incheon port. To measure the calling factors and satisfaction of ports, this study developed a list of 24 items using a seven-point Likert scale through the previous literature reviews, pilot test and emerging factors. Factor analysis, regression analysis, one sample T-test, IPA and SPSS were conducted to verify the determinants choosing ports and customer satisfaction. The result of an empirical study revealed that the cargo volume and information system, etc. in Incheon port was evaluated as satisfied factors and berth availability and port charge, etc. as dissatisfied factors. Based on the outcomes of this study, to strengthen the competitiveness of Incheon port, several strategies were advised such as the inducement of North American and European cargo, port infrastructure, dedicated terminal and GTO inducement, hinterland construction, logistics companies inducement and cooperation with neighboring ports.

선박의 대형화 추세와 더불어 세계 항만들이 급성장하고 있는 실정에서 각 항만들은 경쟁력 우위를 확보하기 위해 많은 전략을 추구하고 있다. 이러한 국제환경으로 인해 기항지 축소가 이루어지며 세계 주요 항만들은 증가하는 물동량을 처리하기 위하여 지역간 Hub항만을 추구하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 항만선택결정요인의 연구를 살펴보고 재정립함으로써 국내에 있는 중소형항만들이 향후 나아가야 할 방향성을 제시하고자 한다.

북극항로가 열리고 있다. 부산항의 북극해관련 문제점을 통한 문제해결의 우선순위를 알아내고자 한다. 이에, 동북아시아국가가 북동항로 이용할 경우 항만선택결정요인에 있어서 항만선택의 민감도에 따른 경쟁력요소를 분석한다. 이 항만경쟁력요소로 부산항의 문제해결우선순위를 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위하여 AHP분석을 하였다.

Pyeongtaek Port is becoming a specialized for importing or exporting cars. In 2010, Pyeongtaek Port became the major port, out of the 31 ports in Korea, for import and export of cars. Usage of this port was especially high for imported cars. In 2011, more than 1 million cars are expected to be imported or exported via Pyeongtaek Port. This research analyses the factors for selecting Pyeongtaek Port for imported cars and recommendations required to improve Pyeongtaek Port. To do this, questionnaires were given to 14 imported car companies that currently, July 2011, use Pyeongtaek Port and used AHP criteria to asses the importances of each factors. According to this research, the most important determinant for the use of Pyeongtaek Port is 'Port Location' followed by 'Port Cost', 'Port Facility', 'Port Service', 'Port Marketing' and 'Port Cargo Volume', in the order of importance. Also, imported car companies say that the factor in need for the most urgent improvement is 'Port Facilities' in Pyeongtaek Port.

To correspond actively to international economy, shipping and port environment change, world main ports have converged in competitiveness raising. However, existing researches have been intensively analyzed port competitiveness on among ports. So, this study analyzes the relations between the main factors of port selection and port competition players: central government, port authority, terminal operators, shipping companies, etc. This paper has a purpose that each port competition player makes a competitive strategy in accordance with this study. First, this study reviewed shipping and port market's environment change and port selection decision factors to correspond to these environment changes and on the basis of this review analyzed relativity between component port competition players and port competition factors. However, port authorities and terminal operators appeared high relevance about in side of expense, service, facilities etc. Because port authorities offered incentive to pull many shipping companies to their ports and terminal operators managed port authorities' ports. But we could deduce high relevance according to other market players' properties without port authorities and terminal operators. Port marketing strategy establishment among port competition players is available on the basis of these factors.

Transportation decisions of ship liners are crucial for policy formulation in ports and shipping lines. Ship liners' port selection depends on the location characteristic of port. With network theory based, we empirically investigated determinants of global ship liners' port selection focused on major trade ports in China and Korea during 1995-2007. We present a detailed discussion on the related literatures about port selection, and develop hypothesis using network-based view. With conditional logit model, empirical results show that global liners select globally positioned ports rather than domestic oriented ones. Global ship liners select ports which have intra national network centrality, global ship network centrality and global network linkage.
