  • Due to increased competition in supply side to reduce operational costs, port professionals have experienced extreme pressure, which demanded academicians to develop the model for efficient port operations from the industry perspective. Among many ports in the world, U.S. ports are our primary interest to analyze in our study for its high volume of cargoes transacted in the U.S. ports. We primarily employed DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) technique to research the productivity of U.S. ports and applied the algorithm of double bootstrapped DEA proposed by Simar & Wilson (2007) to further investigate the driving forces of the performance of U.S. port operations. The external variables employed in our study comprise onDock Rail, Channel Depth, Location, Area, Acres, ForeignCargoRatio, and TEUChange, out of which onDock Rail, Acres, ForeignCargoRatio, and TEUChange were significant. In order to evaluate the effects of methodology selection, we conducted the same analysis applying the Censored model (Tobit) and contrasted the outcomes drawn from the two different techniques. Based on the findings from this work we proposed managerial implications and concluded.

  • Looking at the cargo trend of Gwangyang port (GWP) during past decade, petrochemical items grew by 26% and steel item grew by 12%, but container cargo just grew by 4%. Thus, Yeosu-Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA) sets the port development initiative targeting at industrial core port considering GWP's strength as multi function port and industrial port and GWP's weakness as lower container cargo growth trend. The purpose of this study is proposing the projects about the GWP's industrial core port development. The results of the study is as follows. As a prerequisite for development as an industrial core port, it was suggested to form a consensus on the modification or change of the port performance index of univariate port cargo volume. The following three tasks were presented for GWP to develop as an industrial core port. It can be said that it is most necessary to derive, manage, and monitor GWP industrial core performance indicators. Next, it is necessary to conduct a survey on the satisfaction of industrial support in ports. Finally, it is necessary to measure the added value of the port area of GWP hinterland.

  • A range of problems have risen as the results of the obligated charter service. Constant lack of operation improvement compared to regular routes and lower quality service are results of business practice by the service providers. Therefore, this study executed an empirical research using AHP to present a method for improvement by investigating remote island charter service providers. Result shows that the desirable method is to implement operation evaluation system to induce service providers to consistently put efforts on the operating system development.

  • This objective of this study is to thoroughly analyze the policies of international organizations and major advanced countries relevant to the realization of Green port To construct Green ports, there first must be competition to build such ports in sustainable, fixed quantities. Second, there is a great need for cooperation and support networks made binding by mutual agreements on ship recycling. Third, there is a need for scientific research on responses to changes in environmental regulations and on environmental issues. Today, the majority of the world's ports use gasoline or electric energy, and improving capacities for self-sufficiency through development of new and renewable energy is judged to be a pressing task. The conditions for an eco-friendly port is that it must be an important center for economic and industrial activity, and valuable as a site where people live and work, with residences and work places existing in close proximity.

  • This study examined the impact of geopolitical risk on port throughput in Korea. With a high trade-to-GDP ratio, Korea has an open economy. The vast majority of its exports and imports are serviced by maritime transport. Therefore, cargo volume of Korean seaports is highly likely to be affected by changes in global economy resulting from escalation in geopolitical risk. In this regard, this study investigated the relationship between geopolitical risk and port throughput in Korea during the period of 1995-2022. Results indicated that the impact of geopolitical risk on port throughput was not statistically significant. However, the relationship varied by export, import, and ports. Especially, it was revealed that cargo volume of Korean ports was negatively associated with the level of geopolitical risk. In addition, it was also found that geopolitical risk had a negative impact on the unit price of Korean import..

  • In the modern management literature, knowledge has been recognized as a new strategic resource enabling a firm to create its competitiveness. Shipping companies under fierce competitive structure need to pay attentions to the utility of knowledge management. A shipping firm may develop its unique service capability by classifying, sharing, and transferring the data, information and knowledge obtained from both inside and outside its global service network. The current study attempts to analyze influential relationships between liner shipping firms' knowledge management and service capabilities. In order to achieve this goal, this study designed a knowledge chain model measuring shipping companies' knowledge management levels and tested its validity and reliability based on a total of 80 replied questionnaires from national and foreign liners. The empirical result presents that supportive and primary activities composing a knowledge chain could exert significant positive influences on the enforcement of shipping service capabilities. This research shows that the utility of knowledge management is adoptable in the maritime industry, and recommends that shipping firms should recognize strategic importance of knowledge and actively pursue knowledge management at an entire firm level.
