A Study on use of Para-languages affecting Choral Communication -focused on diction of Korean choral music- (합창 커뮤니케이션에 영향을 미치는 유사언어의 활용에 관한 연구 -한국어 합창 딕션을 중심으로-)

  • The study was aimed at finding an effective use of para-languages, which are important to communicate the meaning of the korean choral music. Para-language is a nonverbal communication that contributes to the delivery of a more expressive language. In choral music, vocalization and diction are important para-languages. Until now, the conductors emphasized vocalization rathe than diction while focusing musical expression in chorus. However, vocalization and diction are not distinct. This study suggested effective choral vocalization and diction technique through the convergence of experience as conductor and knowledge of communication theory.

  • The puropose of this study is to propose an effective diction training techniqe that conductors can use in choral communication. In chorus, the phonology of the language used in the lyrics influences the diction. Therefore, Korean lyrics must be pronounced according to Korean phonology. In verbal language, accuracy of pronunciation is important, but when expressing lyrics in a song, both vocalization and diction are important. In particular, chorus is sung by many people, so if the diction is not accurate, the lyrics will not be delivered properly. In this study, the dictions of lyrics frequently used in actual Korean choral songs were systematically analyzed according to Korean phonological rules. As a result of the study, the main factor that makes choral diction difficult is the phenomenon of phonological fluctuations in Korean. In particular, phonological fluctuations often occurred when pronouncing the final sound and when consonants and consonants were combined. A follow-up study intends to contribute to the development of choral communication by presenting a systematic choral diction based on Korean phonology.

Comparison of the Singing Pitch Characteristics in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Based on Their Choir Experience (성인지적장애인의 노래부르기 시 음도산출 특성: 합창경험 유무에 따른 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare adults' with intellectual disabilities voice pitch between who have choir experiences and those who do not. Participants were a total of 21 male adults with intellectual disabilities (12 choir group members and 9 non-choir group). Praat test was conducted to compare the characteristics of pitch, produced by the participants while they were singing in their comfortable pitch range. The results showed that the range of melodic contour in the choir group was broader and higher than those of the non choir group. Participants in the choir group produced a lower pitch in the beginning note, and they produced a higher pitch compared to the non-choir group on the highest and lowest note of the song. An analysis on the pitch of the individual note that the participants produced revealed a gap between the expected pitch notes and the actual notes produced while singing. In all syllables of the song, participants in the choir group showed higher accuracy of the pitch production, and significantly more accurate on the perfect fifth and eighth intervals. Regarding to the relative pitch, participants in the choir group produced significantly more accurate notes on perfect fifth, perfect fourth, and perfect eighth intervals. Findings of the study suggest that constant singing experience enable them to have pitch training. It also implies for further studies regarding to singing abilities of adults with intellectual disabilities.

  • XML은 HTML의 단순성과 SGML의 복잡성을 동시에 극복하기 위한 노력으로 시작되어 HTML이나 SGML과는 다른 새로운 세계를 만들어 내고 있으며, 인터넷 문서 표현과 관련된 여러 분야에서 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 차세대 인터넷 문서 표현 언어로 주목받고 있는 XML을 이용하여 합창곡의 악보를 표현하는 기법을 제시한다. 이 논문에서는 합창곡 악보를 표현하기 위해 정의된 새로운 마크업 언어인 ScoreML(Score Markup Language)을 소개하고, ScoreML로 작성된 XML 문서를 웹에서 볼 수 있도록 ScoreML 브라우저의 설계 및 구현에 대해 기술한다. ScoreML을 사용하여 작성된 XML 문서는 악보 표현뿐만 아니라 음악 데이터의 저장과 검색에도 사용될 수 있다.

  • This study is conducted for the purpose of conceptualizing a choral communication model. first, the musical communication models analyzed to know how it can apply in the choral music. As a result, we take the music communication is the interaction between composers, performers and audience. But the choral music have properties not found in the general music. The choral music is the need for internal communication process before performing music. First, the conductor is to interpret the music. Next, choral members are shared the interpretation of music. This internal communication be conducted properly, musical communication with the audience will be successful. The trial model provided for in this study will be a guideline for successful communication in the choral music, theoretically or practically.

The Effect of a Chorus Program for Children in a Local Child Center on Character, Social Skills, Problematic Behavior, and Attention Deficit ADHD (지역아동센터 아동대상 합창프로그램이 인성, 사회적 기술, 문제행동, 주의력결핍에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a chorus program in a local child center regarding character, social skills, problematic behaviors, and ADHD. Subjects of this study included 24 children in elementary schools participating in the daytime programs at a local child center located in Suwon, South Korea. The chorus program was comprised of 12 sessions of 60 minutes each, conducted from April 5-July 5, 2017. Results of this study were as follows: First, during the interviews on the character of the children before and after participation in the chorus program, it was noted that the children became more active in terms of the relationships with others and leadership. However, it was also noted that children were more active at the center than they were at their schools. Second, the differences in social skills before and after the chorus program among children were significant in overall social skills and their sub-variables, indicating that there were effective in adjusting social skills. Third, the differences in problematic behaviors before and after participation in the chorus program were significant only in overall problematic behaviors and excessive behavior. This indicates that the program was effective in improving problematic behaviors, particularly for excessive behavior. Fourth, the differences before and after participation in the chorus program in terms of ADHD were statistically significant for ADHD and its sub-variables of carelessness and hyperactivity impulsiveness. This indicates that there was an overall improvement in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Therefore, the findings in this study showed that the chorus program was effective on enhancing character, social skills, problematic behaviors, and ADHD behaviors.

A comparison of the perceptual-auditory voice quality evaluation (GRBAS) and voice-related quality of life (K-VRQOL) according to choir type of elderly women choir members (여성 노인 합창단원의 합창단 유형에 따른 청지각적 음성평가(GRBAS) 및 음성관련 삶의 질(K-VRQOL) 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare voice characteristics and voice-related quality of life (K-VRQOL) of the elderly female choir members using perceptual-auditory voice quality evaluation (GRBAS) and K-VRQOL scales. The participants were 77 women over 60 years old who were actively engaged in the choir in either Seoul or Busan. There are two kinds of choirs that indicate different engagement levels: regular choir and church choir. The perceptual-auditory vocal quality evaluation was listened to by / a / vowels and were graded by experts using the GRBAS scale. As a result, when comparing the differences between groups, the elderly female participants of the regular choir showed higher satisfaction in speech using the subjective speech recognition level than the elderly female members who performed in the church choir. In addition, the analysis showed that the satisfaction level was high in the physical function area of the K-VRQOL scale. This study confirmed that choral activities could yield positive results not only in terms of improving voice function in old age, but also to improve the subjective perception level of voice use, thus suggesting the necessity of systematic music programs to improve voices that are aging.
