Structural tests were performed to investigate the structural performance of concrete-filled steel tube column using different strength steels in their flange and web with high-strength steel HSA800 and mild steel SM490, respectively. The test parameters included the strength of column flange and infill concrete, and effect of concrete infill. Connection between different grade steels were welded using the electrode appropriate for mild steel and verified its performance. To evaluate the behavior of test specimens, eccentric loading tests were performed and the results were compared with the prediction by current design codes. Axial load and moment carrying capacity of test specimens increased with the yield strength of compression flange and weld fracture occurred after the specimen shows full strength. The prediction result for axial load-bending moment relationship and effective flexural stiffness gave good agreement with the test result.

In this study, seismic resistance of concrete encased U-shaped steel beam-to-steel H-shaped column connections was evaluated. Three specimens of the beam-to-column connection were tested under cyclic loading. The composite beam was integrated with concrete slab using studs. Re-bars for negative moment were placed in the slab. The primary test parameter was the details of the connections, which are strengthening and weakening strategies for the beam end and the degree of composite action. The depth of the composite beams was 600mm including the slab thickness. The steel beam and the re-bars in the slab were weld-connected to the steel column. For the strengthening strategy, cover plates were weld-connected to the bottom and top flanges of the steel beam. For the weakening strategy, a void using styrofoam box was located inside the core concrete at the potential plastic hinge zone. The test results showed that the fully composite specimens exhibited good strength, deformation, and energy dissipation capacities. The deformation capacity of the beam exceeded 4% rotation angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame.

This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural performance of concrete members strengthened with external steel plates for the purpose of improving seismic performance. In order to strengthen the structure, a strengthening method was applied that wraps the walls and columns with steel members. The partial section of the wall with the longest span in the structure was manufactured in real size and the strengthening effect was confirmed by performing a static load test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the strengthened section exhibited sufficient flexural performance satisfied to the seismic requirements, but the behavior until failure was not obtained because of actuator capacity. It was confirmed that the strengthened member resists the out-of-plane moment with a composite behavior. It was verified that the stiffness and load carrying capacity of the strengthened member were improved compared to the non-strengthened member by displacement and strain measurements.
PSRC composite column is a concrete encased steel angle column. In the PSRC composite column, the steel angles placed at the corner of the cross-section resists bending moment and compression load. In the present study, using the performance criteria in KBC 2009, cyclic lateral loading test was performed for PSRC columns to verify the seismic performance. The test parameters were the column type, the use of continuous hoop, and the use of studs for steel angle. 2/3 scale specimens of a conventional composite column and three PSRC columns were tested. The test results showed that the load-carrying capacity predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The specimens also exhibited good deformation and energy dissipation capacities. After concrete cover spalling under cyclic loading, the load-carrying capacity were decreased by buckling of longitudinal bars and steel angles. When continuous hoop was used, the deformability of the PSRC column was improved, preventing early buckling of the steel angles.

Bending and axial forces simultaneously occur at the cross-section of a shotcrete lining reinforced with steel supports due to the tunnel geometry. The shotcrete has changing flexural stiffness depending on the axial forces and, as a result, severely nonlinear behavior. The mechanical properties of a shotcrete-steel composite also depend on the type of steel support. This study presents a fiber section element model considering the effect of axial force to evaluate the nonlinear behavior of a shotcrete-steel composite. Additionally, the model was used to analyze the effects of different types of steel supports on the load capacity. Furthermore, a modified hyperbolic model for ground reaction, including strain-softening, is proposed to account for the ground-lining interaction. The model was validated by comparing the numerical results with results from previous load test performed on arched shotcrete specimens. The changes in mechanical responses of the lining were also investigated. Results show a lining with doubly reinforcement rebar has similar load capacity as a lining with H-shaped supports. The use of more materials for the steel support enhances the residual resistance. For all types of steel reinforcement, the contribution of steel supports during peak load decreases as the ground becomes stiffer.

In Korea, many buildings are built with underground spaces and cast-in-place pile method is mostly applied in the temporary retaining walls for the underground space construction. A H-shaped steel section is generally embedded in the soldier pile in the C.I.P method. In this study, a new and economical section with high strength steel replacing the H-shaped section was proposed and its flexural capacity was evaluated experimentally. The new section is the concrete-filled composite section with pentagonal thin plate and thick flange plate. Test results showed that the proposed section has an excellent flexural strength and ductility.

Thispaper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the fire performances ofsimply supported iTECH composite beams using an ISO834 standard fire. There are very few independent studies on the fire resistance of composite steel and concrete structures of various designs. The iTECH composite beam system has been used in construction, but nothing is known about its influence in a fire. To evaluate the fire resistance performanceof the iTECH beam, a test was conducted for 4.7m-span-length iTECH beams under given conditions in a laboratory. The fire resistance performance of unprotected coatings of the iTECH beam has been examined, and a longer period of fire resistance was achieved by increasing the beam coating's section size and decreasing its load ratio. Coatings for the fire protection of iTECH beams reduce the rate of temperature rise of the beam in case of fire, and the required thickness of spray-on fire protection coatings can be determined by means of tests.

The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. In this paper, three types of the detail for joints was selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack contral was investigated through static tests on composite beams. Form the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of half-depth precast deck was observed and especially an overlapping length of loop joint and transverse reinforcement were checked. The results suggest that increasing the loop overlapping length increases the flexural strength of half-depth precast deck with loop joints. In terms of crack contral, the loop joint with transverse reinforcement showed better performance.

The design comparison and flexural reliability analysis of continuous span composite plate girder bridges are performed. The girders are designed by the methods of allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). For the LRFD design, the design specification under development mainly by KBRC, based on AASHTO-LRFD specification in case of steel structures, is applied with the newly proposed design live load which has been developed by analyzing domestic traffic statistics from highways and local roads. For the ASD based design, the current KHBDC code with DB-24 and DL-24 live loads is used. The longest span length for the 3-span continuous bridges with span arrangement ratio of 4:5:4 is assumed to be from 30 m to 80 m. The amount of steel, performance ratios, and governing design factors for the sections designed by the ASD and LRFD methods are compared. In the reliability analysis for the flexural failure of the sections designed by two methods, the statistical properties on flexural resistance based on the yield strength statistics for over 16,000 domestic structural steel samples are applied.
Recently, the use of composite construction method using precast (PC) and cast-in-place (CIP) concrete is increased in modular construction. For PC members, pre-tensioning is used to improve efficiency of the structural performance. However, current design codes do not clearly define shear strength of prestressed PC-CIP composite members. In this study, 22 specimens were tested to evaluate shear strength of prestressed composite members with vertical shear reinforcement. The test variables were the area ratio of high-strength (60 MPa) to low-strength concrete (24 MPa), prestressing force of strands, shear span-to-depth ratio(a/d), and vertical shear reinforcement ratio. The test results showed the prestressing force did not completely restrain diagonal cracking of non-prestressed concrete in the web. Thus, the effect of prestress force was not insignificant in the effect for monolithic beams. The vertical shear strength and horizontal shear strength of the composite beams were compared with the strength predictions of KCI design method.
