  • Objectives : In Traditional Korean medicine, Daucus carota L. has been used for treating dyspepsia, diarrhea, dysentery and cough. Recent pharmacognosic evidence showed D. carota has anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-fungal, and hypotensive effects. Present study investigated hepato-protective effect of D. carota ethanol extract (DCE) against oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. Methods : After HepG2 cells were pretreated with different concentrations of DCE, the cells were exposed to tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) for inducing oxidative stress. Cell viability, hydrogen peroxide production, glutathione concentration, and mitochondrial membrane potentials were measured to explore hepato-protective effect of DCE. Phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and effect of compound C on cell viability were determined to investigate the role of AMPK on DCE-mediated cytoprotection. Results : DCE significantly decreased the tBHP-mediated cytotoxicity in a concentration dependent manner and reduced the changes on apoptosis-related proteins by tBHP in HepG2 cells. In addition, DCE significantly prevented hydrogen peroxide production, glutathione depletion, and mitochondrial membrane impairment induced by tBHP. Treatment with DCE increased phosphorylation of AMPK, and the DCE-mediated cytoprotection was abolished by pretreatment with compound C. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that DCE can protect hepatocytes from oxidative stress through activation of AMPK.

Prescriptions that Rhizoma dioscoreae was taken as a monarch drug are utilized for 18 therapeutic purposes, for example, internal injury, stool disease, pediatric disease. In paticular, 24% of prescriptions appear in the chapter of internal injury, and 18% of those appear in the chapter of stool. Results : Prescriptions that utilize Rhizoma dioscoreae as the main ingredient are used in the treatment of indigestion, diarrhea and paralysis. Rhizoma dioscoreae is used in pathogenic factors such as water, water with damp, and used in pathology related to stomach system. Conclusions : The dosage of Rhizoma dioscoreae is 8li(about 0.29 gram) to 3jeon(about 11.25 gram), however 1jeon(about 3.75 gram) has been taken the most for clinical application. Sagunjatang and Siljangsan is the most useful base prescription which use the Rhizoma dioscoreae as the main ingredient.

  • Objectives : Oxidative stress is an important cause of many diseases including liver injury. Therefore, adequate regulation of oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in maintaining liver function. Until recently, there has been no studies on the hepatoprotective effect of Samchulgeonbi-tang (SCGBT). Therefore, the hepatoprotective effect of SCGBT was investigated in HepG2 cells. In this study, oxidative stress was induced by arachidonic acid (AA) and iron. Methods : To analyze the hepatoprotective effects of SCGBT against oxidative stress induced by AA + iron, the cell viability, apoptosis-related proteins and intracellular ROS, glutathione (GSH), and mitochondrial membrane permeability (MMP) were measured. In addition, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) transcription activation and expressions of Nrf2 target gene were analyzed through immunoblot analysis. Results : SCGBT increased the cell viability from AA + iron - induced cell death and inhibited apoptosis by regulating apoptosis related proteins. SCGBT protected cells by inhibiting ROS production, GSH depletion, and MMP degradation against AA + iron induced oxidative stress. Furthermore, Nrf2 activation was increased by SCGBT, and the Nrf2 target genes were also activated by SCGBT. Conclusions : These results suggest that the SCGBT has a hepatocyte protection effect and antioxidant effect from AA + iron induced oxidative stress.

  • Object : The purpose of this study is to observe the correlation between change in pattern identification symptoms and scandinavian stroke scale in ischemic stroke patient who had receive traditional Korean medical treatment and conservative treatment. Methods : 43 subjects were recruited from patients with ischemic stroke within 30 days of onset. We chose the subjects who had at least one follow up session and had checked the score between last follow up session and first session in pattern identification and scandinavian stroke scale. We also assessed the correlation between pattern identification and scandinavian stroke scale. Results : There were significant negative correlation between pattern identification and scandinavian stroke scale in Fire-heat pattern and positive correlation in Dampness-phlegm pattern. Conclusions : This study provides evidence that collaborative treatment maybe effective in improving neurologic symptoms in ischemic stroke patients diagnosed as Fire-heat pattern. Further studies with larger scale and longer observation period, more neurologicscales scales, control group would be required.

  • Ataxia and vertigo are frequent clinical findings in cerebellar infarction patients. In severe cases, they cannot achieve normal activity in daily life. A 65-year-old man was admitted with ataxia and vertigo diagnosed as acute cerebellar infarction. We prescribed for Chukdam-tang to treat the phlegm disease. After this treatment, ataxia and vertigo improved. We suggest Chukdam-tang is significantly effective on the treatment of cerebellar infarction.

  • Objectives : This study reports changes in liver function test (LFT) after Korean Medicine treatment in patients admitted to Korean Medicine hospital with abnormal LFT. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the Korean medicine treatment and abonormal LFT to verify safety of Korean medicine treatment by analyzing index of LFT. Methods : From Oct. 2015 to Sep. 2020, the result was analyzed for 91 patients admitted to the Pohang Korean Medicine Hospital and received Korean Medicine treatment. Asparate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total bilirubin (TB) were compared at admission and discharge. Results : Comparison between admission and discharge LFT showend AST decreased from 52.72±25.08 to 43.2±19.20, ALT from 70.85±32.40 to 62.13±29.40, and TB from 1.33±0.37 to 0.81±0.29. Conclusions : After Korean medicine treatment, AST, ALT, and TB decreased compared with the values at admission. Further studies on safety of Korean Medicine treatment are warranted.

  • Objectives : Hemistepta lyrata Bunge (Bunge) has been used for treating wound, hemorrhage, fever in Korean traditional medicine. Present study investigated anti-inflammatory effect of H. lyrata chloroform extract (HLE) and its molecular mechanism involved. Methods : To assess anti-inflammatory effect of HLE, production of nitric oxide (NO) and expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and pro-inflammatory cytokines were measured on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) signaling pathway was examined to elucidate its molecular mechanism. Results : Pretreatment of HLE inhibited NO production in a concentration dependent manner. HLE also decreased expression of iNOS and COX-2, and alleviated expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, HLE pretreatment inhibited phosphorylation of inhibitory-${\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and p65. Conclusions : These results suggest that HLE exhibits anti-inflammatory effect via inhibition of NF-${\kappa}B$.

  • Many researchers are trying to acquire intellectual properties on the promising technologies for prior occupation in their area. For this, the number of patents as a result of researches is increasing. In spite of the tendency in research of oriental medicine, the results have been focused on research papers. In this paper, we have reported patents around the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine(KIOM) to find trends in patents in the field of oriental medicine. There are 211 Korea patents and 8 USA patents. Most of these patents are fouced on "medical" and "diagnosis" areas.
