Through the comparison of the cadastral map of 1912 and the aerial photograph of 1962, the paper has given the outline of the and the distribution of Open-rectangular plan Hanok at Bukchon. And the paper defines the characteristics of Open-rectangular plan Hanok at Bukchon as followings. First, Open-rectangular plan Hanok at Bukchon is the mutated type of Open-rectangular plan Hanok in Kyong-gi Province. Second, the composition and characteristics of Bakat-chae and outer-courtyard have been changed through the adaptation itself to the compact lots of urban neighborhood. Third, the composition and characteristics of An-chae has not been changed except the inner corner bay, that gives the lights and view to An-bang through the window. And the comparison and observation of four examples, the paper defines the identities of Open-rectangular plan Hanok at Bukchon. The partial transformation comes from the conflicts and adjustments with the structure of alley and the topographical condition of lots.

  • This study is to derive a project model based on potential demand for Korean-style houses, focusing on new town detached housing sites that LH supplies and to test validity of the derived model and to present the direction and supply methods of the projects. The existing high-class new town Korean-style housing developments that have been considered were found to have little business value due to problems in choice of location and discordance of demand, so 6 types of projects were established through the methods of changes in planned scale, combined use, and subdivision of plot of land based on the results of survey. The type that has the highest business value among the project models was block-type multifamily houses, and this can be interpreted as the increase in total construction area leading to increase inrevenues of allotment sales due to economies of scale. The feasibility of mass housing model in which small-scale Korean-style houses are combined with amenities was found to be high, and if the same project conditions as those of the block-type multifamily houses are applied, the business value of the Korean-style tenement houses was found to be high. Besides, the high-class housing models within block-type detached housing areas are typical projects that the private sector generally promotes, and the construction cost was found to be most expensive with 910 million won per house. In order to enhance the business value of the Korean-style housing development, collectivization such as choice of location, diversification of demand classes, optimization of house sizes, and combination of uses is needed. And in order to adopt Korean-style houses in the detached housing sites, the adjustments and division of the existing planned plots are needed, and the strategies to cope with new demand through supplying Korean-style housing types of sites can be suggested. Also breaking away from the existing uniform residential development methods, the development method through supplying original land that is natural land not yet developed besides basic infrastructures (main roads and water and sewage) can be considered, and as the construction of more than 1~2 stories building is impossible due to the structure of Korean-style house roof and furniture. So it can be suggested that original land in the form of hilly land is considered to be most suitable to large-scale development projects.

  • Hanok in Bukchon was originally planned for residential buildings, but recently, there have been needs and wants to renovate and modernize the houses into some other purposes. Many researches exist with regard to hanok in Bukchon; yet, most previous studies focus on the spatial changes caused by the renovation of hanok. Only few studies have dealt with some component issues such as window. Nevertheless, window of hanok is an important aesthetic and functional element that determines unique characteristics of hanok. In the process of recent modernization and functional changes of hanok, its traditional design is also changing. In fact, Bukchon has been rapidly evolving for tourist attractions so that banok has been renovated in various commercial as well as cultural purposes. Many of residential hanok have been converted into other purposes such as cultural, commercial or non-residential facilities so that the role of windows should be changed accordingly. Analyzing windows of the renovated hanok in Bukchon, this study identifies changes in its types in accordance with the repurposing. It deals with windows of the non-residential hanok only. A total of 456 Bukchon hanok are included in the Bukchon Historical and Cultural Center in the Hanok Register of the Hanok Registration System, which was enforced in 2001. Although 381 out of 456 hanok have been repaired since 2001, only 68 non-resident Bukchon hanok of the repaired ones are selected and surveyed in this study.

  • As interest in eco-friendly architecture and Korean traditional culture is increasing, interest in contemporary han-ok is steadily increasing. Recently, many people experienced the han-ok directly and indirectly with the attention of a commercial contemporary han-ok such as restaurants, coffee shops, and lodging facilities, and as a result, the house has a preference for the residence of the contemporary han-ok. Compared to modern residential houses, however, han-ok is lack the convenience of heating and cooling, energy management, security, and maintenance. For this reason, the increased interest and preference for han-ok does not lead to living in contemporary han-ok. This study was conducted in the following ways to improve inconvenience by applying smart home services to contemporary han-ok. Recent technology trends in smart home services and technologies developed and marketed to date have been identified in previous research cases and literature studies. Based on this, a list of smart home services and their application methods were derived that would relieve the inconvenience of contemporary han-ok for smart home services. We hope that this research will serve as a reference for subsequent researchers studying contemporary han-ok.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate and deduct appropriate Hanok type within Suwon Hwaseong Fortress in which formula Hanok type has not remained. To do so, urban change according to chronology is analyzed and architectural aspect of transition is collected. By using geographic information in Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, present urban structural density, status of architecture and chronological aspect of transition in one-story buildings is surveyed. Through these data, appropriate Hanok form and density to the area is suggested. As a result, Hanok with two or more stories is economically suitable because its average plottage is excessively narrow. And back trowelling is desirable to construct walls in some concentrated areas with Hanok through arrangement of construction. Also in the other building sites, Hanoks are formed by a standard for separation to the property line. However it is necessary that exist standard about separation of property line is institutionally alleviated.

  • Since the recent Hanok boom in Korea, Contemporary Hanok has been evolving in terms of structure, space, form, etc. To get a comprehensive understanding of the diversified Contemporary Hanok, this paper aims at its type classification by analyzing architects' designs since 2000. The criteria for the classification are two: (1) renovation [Re] or new construction [New]; and (2) degree of Contemporary Hanok's deviation from the traditional Hanok's standard - maintaining the traditional form [Main]; changing space within the traditional form [Space]; changing the traditional frame [Frame]; and juxtaposing the traditional and the modern [Combi]. From the two criteria, this paper deduced eight types of Contemporary Hanok, named respectively: Re-Main, New-Main, Re-Space, New-Space, Re-Frame, New-Frame, Re-Combi, and New-Combi, and studied their cases. It can be argued that various aspects of Contemporary Hanok and their critical meanings were well-investigated through this type classification and case-studies.
