Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a severe disease that usually needs surgical treatment. We have treated two CSM patients with Korean traditonal medicine, which includes acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine and manual treatment (Chuna). For objective evaluation, we used Nurick's classification, JOA (Japanses Orthopedic Association) score, grip and release test and hand grasping power measurement. Post-treatment analysis has shown that grip and release test score and grasping power of two patients were both remarkably improved, along with the improvements on both Nurick's classification and JOA score. This study showed that Korean traditional medicine could be effective conservative treatment for CSM.

The purpose of this report is to investigate the clinical application of Korean Traditional treatment to abdominal pain patient after subdural hemorrhage occurred. The main herb medicine used in this study is Ondam-tang (wenda-tang) which is frequently used in psychiatric disorders. Also, acupuncture, moxibustion and physical rehabilitation treatment were practiced. After taking an Ondam-tang (wendan-tang), the clinical symptoms of the patient were improved.

Objective: This study reports the efficacy of using integrative Korean medicine treatments for a patient with facial paralysis and accompanying trigeminal neuralgia. Methods: A 45-year-old male patient with left side facial palsy and facial pain due to Bell's palsy with trigeminal neuralgia was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping for 18 days. The treatment effect was evaluated by measuring the scores for the numerical rating scale (NRS) of facial pain, the House-Brackmann scale, and the Yanagihara scale. Results: After the hospital treatment, the patient's facial pain NRS score was decreased, and the House-Brackmann scale and Yanagihara scale scores improved after the administration of the Korean medicine treatments. Conclusions: The integrative Korean medicine treatments appeared to be effective in treating facial nerve palsy and associated trigeminal neuralgia.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment, including Onkyung-tang, on fibromyalgia. Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and chuna manual therapy for 13 days. To evaluate the improvements, we used a numeric rating scale (NRS), the American College of Rheumatology Preliminary Diagnostic Criteria (ACR), the neck disability index (NDI), and the Oswestry disability index (ODI). Results: After treatment, the scores for the NRS, ACR, NDI, and ODI all decreased compared with baseline. Conclusion: This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment that includes Onkyung-tang can be effective in reducing pain and increasing ability to function in patients with fibromyalgia.

Objectives : This study was prepared for investigating the clinical features of stroke patients. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 102 patients who were admitted to Department of Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Kyung-Won University with a diagnosis of stroke from Jan. 1, 2004 to Dec. 31, 2004. Results : Ischemic stroke(include TIA, 82.4%) was more common than hemorrhagic stroke(17.6%). The incidence in male was 41.2%, in female was 17.6% and the most prevalent age group is over-sixties. Cerebral infarction was most frequently noticed in lacunar-infarction and hemorrhage in putamen. Hypertention, the most preceding diseases, followed by diabetes mellitus and CVA. The rate of recurrence was 27.45%. Cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage was much occurred after rising. The most patients visited the hospital within 24 Hours. The most common symptoms in admission time were motor weakness and speech disorder. The complication was mostly mental disorder. Conclusion : Our study on CVA patients was similar to previous studies from 1994 to 2003. In most cases, western and oriental treatment and medicine were given synthetically.

목적: 본 연구는 대전대학교 부속 한방병원에서 암을 주소로 입원치료를 받은 환자를 대상으로 내원 동기 및 만족도를 평가하고자 한다. 방법: 총 100명의 입원환자를 대상으로 의료서비스 만족도 측정을 위한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 통계분석은 독립표본 T검정(Independent t-test), 분산 분석(ANOVA)을 사용하였다. 결과: 암환자들이 한방병원에 내원한 주된 동기는 '암의 전이 및 재발을 예방하기 위해서'로 조사되었다. 환자들은 한방 치료 중 침과 뜸에 대해 가장 높은 만족도를 보였다. 5점 척도로 구성된 만족도 조사에서 한의사 서비스와 관련된 만족도는 평균 4.80점, 의료서비스 이용 관련 만족도는 4.68점으로 나타났다. 결론: 대부분의 암환자는 한방병원의 의료서비스에 만족하는 것으로 나타났고 성별, 연령 및 직업에 따른 한방 의료서비스 만족도에는 유의한 차이가 없었다.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the effect of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) in alleviating the side effects of lung cancer patient undergoing immunotherapy. Method: A 43-year-old man, who was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer, received pembrolizumab treatments. The patient was treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine (Geoeoyangpye-tang) to control various uncomfortable symptoms. The degree of pain was measured by the numeric rating scale (NRS). The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the EORTC 13-item lung cancer-specific module (EORTC LC-13 questionnaire) were used to assess the change in the quality of life. Results: After the TKM treatment, the flank pain and arthralgia based on the NRS were significantly improved. Various uncomfortable symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea, insomnia, and loss of appetite were also significantly improved, based on the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-LC13. The size of the primary tumor was decreased during treatment. The disease status was stable radiologically after two months from discharge.

We studied the effect of Korean medicine treatment on the clearance of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) colonization and on improvement in symptoms in a stroke patient. The patient was continuously followed up with stool VRE cultures while being treated with herbal medicine, Chunglijagam-tang, acupuncture, and oxygen therapy. We also checked the coccygeal pressure sore condition and the oxygen levels during therapy. No VRE colonization was found after treatment and the oxygen levels and pressure sores had improved. This study proved that Korean medicine treatment could be effective for the clearance of VRE colonization and improvement of symptoms.
