  • Geodetic and geophysical quantities related to gravity data are analyzed using three-dimensional sin x/x method for the southern part of the Korean peninsula and adjacent Japan Sea. The thickness of isostatic crust is found as 26 km. The average isostatic gravity anomaly in this area is appeared to be +24.8 mgal, of which result indicates that the surface features are under-compensation or the thickness of the crust is thinner than normal. It is noteworthy that the general trend of the deflections of the vertical in direction is nearly perpendicular to the geological structure having a direction of NNE-SSW in the southern part of Korea.

  • Paleomagnetic studies have made remarkable contributions to the understanding of many geological aspects of Korea for the last 40 years, such as the collisional processes of Korean Peninsula, the development of basins in relation with fault systems, the opening and evolution of the East Sea, and the reconstruction of paleogeographic configuration. These contributions have played an important role in the escalation of geology in Korea by elucidating the mechanisms on Processes of fragmentation and amalgamation of the Peninsula, mountain building, igneous activities, metamorphism, and folding and faulting based on the view of plate tectonics. This paper is intended to introduce and summarize the paleomagnetic research papers designed to decipher the tectonic processes of Korea, according to the geologic ages of the studied rocks.

  • Tephrochronology uses regional tephra for age dating and stratigraphic correlations. Regional tephras are important in Quaternary geology and archaeology because they can be used as stratigraphic time-markers. In this review, identification and dating methods of tephra are summarized. In addition, the characteristics of regional tephras in terrestrial deposits of the Korean Peninsula are elaborated, and geological applications and limitations of the regional tephra layers are also discussed. So far, AT, Ata, and Kb-Ks tephra layers from Kyushu, Japan have been found in Pleistocene paleosol, marine terrace deposits, and lacustrine deposits in Korea. Also, although not officially confirmed, Aso-4 tephra is likely to occur in terrestrial deposits. The regional tephra layers are vital for dating, especially with regard to sediments over 50 ka beyond the range of radiocarbon dating, and for dating of active faults. Furthermore, it can provide important information for preparing countermeasures against volcanic disasters. However, in order to use the tephra layer geologically, it must be confirmed whether it is a primary deposit based on sedimentological study.

  • In this study, appropriate geosites for geological field trips were explored and measures for their effective utilization in education were discussed, focusing on Okseo-myeon, Sanbuk-dong, Bieung-do, Yami-do, Sinsi-do, and Seonyu-do areas in Gunsan City, Korea. To this end, we analyzed the geological learning elements of the curriculum that were revised in 2015 and selected 7 geosites through field work based on prior research on the study areas. These areas have immense potential as a rich source of information on the Mesozoic geology of the Korean Peninsula, including igneous rocks formed as a consequence of Jurassic and Cretaceous igneous activities, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, dinosaur footprints, plant fossils, ripple marks, and folds. When the learning elements available at the geosites were compared to those of the curriculum, they contained essentials used in high grade of elementary school and high school, and in particular, they had most of the learning elements used in high school. Accordingly, educational activities that can be carried out in each of the geosites in Gunsan City were proposed.

  • Seismicity and stress state in the Korean peninsula are studied using the catalogue of historical earthquakes and that from the seismological observations before the 1960s, with the aid of instrumental catalogue up to 1995. It seems that the completeness of the historical catalogue has a significant enhancement during the first two hundred years of the Yi dynasty, i.e., from the 1400s to the 1600s. From then on the catalogue may be regarded as near to complete for strong earthquakes in an overall sense. From the distribution of strong earthquakes, three seismic zones may be identified. From the south to the north, those are the southern seismic zone (남부지진대), the Seoul-Pyongyang seismic zone (서울-평양지진대), and the northern seismic zone (북부지진대). The mechanisms of some earthquakes obtained using first motion read- ings are reevaluated with a grid testing method. The results indicate that the compressional axis is nearly horizontal along the EW direction.

  • Advanced geological surveys and exploration activities were first carried out in Korea in 1884 in accordance with a treaty of friendship and commerce between Great Britain and Korea and a treaty of friendship and commerce between Germany and Korea. The first paper by Gottsche, C. was also published in a German Journal in 1886. Efforts toward independent acquisition of Western geological survey and exploration technology were actively promoted by the Korean Empire in the early 1900s, but were frustrated by the Japanese Empire. Systematic geological surveys and exploration were conducted in Korea by Japanese geologists during the Japanese occupation. A basic geological maps(61sheets), a bulletin on the geological survey of Korea, a bulletin and technical report on deposits in Korea, and a coalfield geological survey report were published during this period. Overall, the intentions under lying the geological surveys and exploration activities by foreigners in Korea prior to the Japanese occupation were questionable. However, the results of these surveys and explorations themselves can be evaluated as positive in terms of academic performance.
