  • This study examines the effects of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) or the Intraseasonal Oscillation (ISO) on precipitation, temperature and circulation anomalies over East Asia according to the eight different MJO phases during the winter and summer seasons. A nonlinear response appears the wintertime precipitation pattern during the phase of 3 (where the MJO center is located over the Eastern Indian Ocean) and 8 (where the MJO center is located over the Western Hemisphere) over the Korean Peninsula. That is, for these phases, the positive precipitation anomalies appear for the MJO intensity less than 2 standard deviations while the negative precipitation anomalies appear in the case of the MJO intensity greater than 2 standard deviations. The negative precipitation anomaly in the latter case is duandard d stronger anomalous anticyclone formed over the Korean Peninsula and cold and dry advection by northerly winds. The response of precipitation and circulation to the boreal summer ISO is also investigated.

  • This study aims to figure out the weather and climate environment of Seoul area in S. Korea during 1623~1800, which has not been studied so far, by using daily records of weather conditions and meteorological phenomena in the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty(承政院日記) together with records of abnormal weather conditions and natural disasters in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄). During 1500~1760 as a period of the Little Ice Age it was generally cold and dry, particularly cool summers of Seoul area. Changes in weather conditions and meteorological phenomena and climate changes appeared prominently at around 1650, 1710, 1770. The annual numbers of rain days and of snow days began to change largely in the 1640s. The rain(and snow) days reduced significantly in the 1710s~1650s, but increased sharply in the 1710s and later. The rain days in summer rapidly increased after the late 1710s, while the snow days greatly reduced after the mid 1770s. The cloudy days around the 1710s greatly reduced in summer, while slightly increased in winter. The hail days increased significantly in the late 1720s and lasted until the 1760s. The fog days began to reduce after 1770 to the fewer days than the climatic normals of 1981~2010. These times are overall consistent with findings of historical climatological cross-checking data and geophysical biological proxy data, accompanied by a trend of relatively enhanced colder and drier of Seoul area.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of relationship between ocean conditions and snowfall when cold and dry continental air mass passes through the West Sea of Korea. Route of continental high atmospheric pressure can cause effect on snowfall at the west regions (Inchoen, Gunsan, Mokpo) of the Korean Peninsula. The continental high atmospheric pressure extend from the southern China to western coastal region of the Korean Peninsula during the December, and it extend from the north side of China through Bohai Sea and Yodong Peninsula to central area of the Korean Peninsula during the February. Therefore, more snowfall recorded in Incheon is higher during Feb. than Dec.. whereas Gunsan and Mokpo is the opposite. The heavy snowfall at the western coastal region of Korea was caused by loss of the heat from the ocean to air when it's higher than $100W/m^2$. the heavy snowfall was also observed when the arrangement of continental high atmospheric pressure and low pressure was high at the West and low at the East, which formed a front in West and when the wind blow from the North or North West at the speed of $4\sim8m/sec$. There were not much relation between salinity in the western sea and snowfall in the western coastal region of Korea.

  • The cold surge is an important extreme weather in East Asia during winter, and is largely affected by behavior of the Siberian high Arctic Oscillation, which represents undulation of large-scale pressure pattern in the Arctic region. Recent studies also revealed that the synoptic low pressure system developing in the eastern boundary of the Asian continent is sensitive to sea surface temperature (SST) and plays an important role in strengthening the cold advection over the Korean Peninsula during cold surges. In this study, we analyzed the Arctic Oscillation affecting the large-scale background of cold surge in East Asia, and the sea surface temperature in the coast of East Asia is examined focusing on its role on synoptic low-inducing cold advection. For the analysis, the days with the bottom 3% of the average daily temperature, measured at five surface stations in Korean Peninsula during 49 years (1969/70-2017/18), were used for the cold surge cases. During the negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation, a strong trough is observed over East Asia, and the inflow of cold air from the polar region is strengthened, which lead to frequent cold surges. In addition, anomalously high SST in the eastern coast of Asia increases sensible and latent heat release from the ocean, therefore, it enlarges the likelihood of synoptic low-inducing extreme cold surges.

  • From the Tertiary Yeonil Group distributed in Songra and Cheongha areas, the northern part of the Pohang Basin, nine archaeomonad species belonging to two genera, and other three types of chryophycean cysts considered as stomatocysts, five endoskeletal dinoflagellate species belonging to three genera and eighteen ebridian species belonging to eleven genera were identified. Based on above siliceous microfossil assemblages, the Yeonil Group is corresponded to Middle Miocene age. The group is correlated with the Calvert Formation (Maryland in USA) and the Hojuji Formation (in Central Japan) by its archaeomonad cysts. And, the group is correlated with the intervals of Actiniscus elongatus to Middle Hermesinella conata zones in Southwest Pacific region and of Spongebria miocenica to Middle Hermesineila schulzii zones in $V{\o}ring$ Plateau, Norwegian Sea, based on the ebridian assemblages of the group. From the chrysophycean cyst including archaeomonad, endoskeletal dinoflagellate and ebridian assemblages in the Yeonil Group of the study area, it is inferred that cold water masses dominated during the deposition oi the group with occasional warm water. The upper part of the group might be somewhat colder than the lower one of the group in depositional condition. In addition, minute chrysopycean cysts considered as stomatocysts suggest the influence of fresh or brackish water during the deposition of the group.

  • Holocene vegetation and climate changes were assumed on the basis of pollen records from Wonpyeong Trench II-3 of the Osong archaeological site, Cheongju, Chungbuk Province, Korea. An organic matter beared in coarse sediments appeared to be low throughout the succession. Although an occurrence of pollen grains is not high, some dominant and principal taxa may indicate vegetation changes response to climate changes in central inland area of the Korean Peninsula. The age determination can be estimated with indirect way by comparing with previous age-controlled pollen studies. It is assumed that the former last glacial conifer forests had been changed into open mixed conifers and deciduous broadleaved forest during the early Holocene period. Warmer and more humid climate conditions, during the mid-Holocene, might have allowed the hardwoods including deciduous- and evergreen-broadleaved trees, and warm-preferring pine tree to flourish. Subsequently, the former forests were replaced by mixed of conifer and deciduous broadleaved forest owing to deterioration of climate conditions during the late Holocene. Human activity is also detected by agricultural indicators, such as buckwheat and large pollen grains comparable to corn, in upper most pollen profile. During this time, the forests in studied area were primarily affected by human disturbance rather than natural environment.

  • The Late Pleistocene pollen record from the Poil-dong, Uiwang, Kyunggi-do, reveals that mixed coniferous and deciduous broadleaved forests were spread along with herb and fern understory. Palynofloral changes reflect climate fluctuations. From ca. 43,100 to 41,900 cal. yr BP, a mixed coniferous and deciduous broadleaved forest combined with open grassland occupied the study area, which indicates cooler condition than today. During the period of ca. 41,900-41,200 cal. yr BP, along with fern understory a decrease in subalpine conifers and an increase in temperate deciduous broadleaved trees suggest a climatic amelioration. A climatic deterioration, as evidenced by an increase in subalpine conifers and a decrease in the density of vegetation cover, occurred from ca. 41,200 to 39,700 cal. yr BP.

  • Detailed interdisciplinary investigations demonstrate that the Yeongsan River estuarine-filled sediments clearly record important paleoenvironmental changes during the Last Glacial and Holocene. The sediments from 18.9 m(20.5∼l.6m in depth) long core MW-1 are differentiated by changes in sedimentary textures and palynomorph assemblages. Chronology was provided by AMS$^{14}$C dating and regional pollen correlation. Three paleoenvironrnental phases are recognized: (1) The Last Glacial deposits consist mainly of fluvial sediments and paleosols, experienced deposition alternating with pedogenesis. The appearance of the paleosols suggests that the paleoclimate might be cold and humid. (2) The early and middle Holocene phase started abruptly in response to the rapid global climatic warming. and is characterized by abundant marine palynomorphs. (3) The late Holocene is marked by more cool conditions. The paleoenvironmental changes recorded in the sediments coincide not only with local but also with broad-scale, probably global climate changes.
