Currently, black-box-based machine learning algorithms are used to analyze big data in manufacturing. This algorithm has the advantage of having high analytical consistency, but has the disadvantage that it is difficult to interpret the analysis results. However, in the manufacturing industry, it is important to verify the basis of the results and the validity of deriving the analysis algorithms through analysis based on the manufacturing process principle. To overcome the limitation of explanatory power as a result of this machine learning algorithm, we propose a manufacturing big data analysis method using genetic programming. This algorithm is one of well-known evolutionary algorithms, which repeats evolutionary operators such as selection, crossover, mutation that mimic biological evolution to find the optimal solution. Then, the solution is expressed as a relationship between variables using mathematical symbols, and the solution with the highest explanatory power is finally selected. Through this, input and output variable relations are derived to formulate the results, so it is possible to interpret the intuitive manufacturing mechanism, and it is also possible to derive manufacturing principles that cannot be interpreted based on the relationship between variables represented by formulas. The proposed technique showed equal or superior performance as a result of comparing and analyzing performance with a typical machine learning algorithm. In the future, the possibility of using various manufacturing fields was verified through the technique.
Creativity has very important significance to children. Although active researches and educations on other studies (for instance, mathematics, science, logics, music, etc) are being done, evaluation or development on children's creativity in design is very inadequate. Therefore, this study is a basic research to develop evaluation to judge design creativity of children as an incipient stage of educational method development to develop children's creativity in design. Evaluation categories (originality - novelty/fun, practicality-function/possibility) that can evaluate design creativity of children were drawn out based on documentary records, and as the results or performing experimental research to figure out correlativity between creativity of idea and design creativity targeting children in second grade of elementary school, subordinate provinces of idea's creativity related to design creativity were fluency and elaboration. However, it does not mean that fluency and delicacy are the only subordinate provinces of idea's creativity related to design creativity, but they are more influential compared to other provinces (creativity, abstractness of title, and resistance to premature closure) This study is to prepare basic framework of educational method to improve design creativity education of children, and has its meaning to complement what are lacked in design creativity through the educational method.
A numerical model of three-dimensional soil water distribution for drip irrigation management under cropped conditions was developed using Richards equation in Cartesian coordinates. The model accounts for both seasonal and diurnal changes in evaporation and transpiration, and the growth of plant root and the shape of root zone. Solutions were numerically approximated using the Crank-Nicolson implicit finite difference technique on the block-centered grid system and the Gauss-Seidel elimination in tandem. The model was tested under several conditions to allow the flow rates and configurations of drip emitters vary. In general, simulation results agreed well with experimental results and were as follows. The velocity of soil-water flow decreased drastically with distance from the drip source, and the rate of expansion of the wetted zone decreased rapidly during irrigation. The wetting front of wetted zone from a surface drip emitter traveled farther in vertical direction than in horizontal direction. Under this experimental weather condition, water use efficiency of a drip-irrigated apple field was greatest for 4-drip-emitter system buried at 25 cm, resulting from 10% increase in transpiration but 20% reduction in soil evaporation compared to those for surface 1-drip emitter system. Soil moisture retention curve obtained using disk tension infiltrometer showed significant difference from the curve obtained with pressure plate extractor.
For efficient use of wood, it is important to control moisture of wood in processing wood. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can be used to estimate the physical and chemical properties of materials quickly and nondestructively. In this study, it was intended to measure the moisture contents on the surface of wood using NIR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analytic statistical techniques. Because NIR spectroscopy is affected by the chemical components of the specimens and contains signal noise, a regression model for detecting moisture content of wood was established after carrying out several numerical pretreatments such as Smoothing, Derivative and Normalization in this study. It shows that the regression model using NIR absorbance in the range of 750~2,500 nm predicts the actual surface moisture content very well. Near-infrared spectroscopy technique developed in this study is expected to improve a technology to control moisture content of wood in using and drying process.
Every object's patterns is the balancing-relationship between the object's inner-energy and outer-stress. To see this as a balancing-relationship between an organism, inner-energy would be the occurrence of thermodynamic entropy which is for its existing maintenance. Outer-stress would be the friction that comes from the surrounding environment. Namely, we can see that object's figure exists in the balance between an extort to survive and fiction that disturb it. However, it is fourth that these figures are consisted of a curve and curved-surface which is not a straight line. So, it is impossible to find a figure made up of straight lines and surfaces in the existing object's world. It's true that we have regarded only a curve as the beautiful. Here, we have presented that in a curve, there exists an important function which protect our survival from the ancient humanity. And by closely observing the function in a physical dynamic-pattern sight, we've searched what is important in the design's origin that handle curve-patterns. Of course it would be more reasonable to analyze it in the standpoint of Mathematics, Chemistry, or Biology, and synthesize the points. However, due to the limitation of the researchability, we will concern about the physical structure in the design. Deficient details will be replenished through the study between educational systems. As a result, we have confirmed that, devoting the curve's physical structure-phenomenon (occurred in nature) to the design, is more beautiful in our eyes, too.
This study is on improving the general engineering education for enhancing the quality of engineers at a local engineering school in which the students are not highly qualified for engineering education. Based on the analysis on the current engineering education by asking questions to professors, students and alumni of Hongik College of Science and Engineering, we have set the basic educational philosophy as educating practical engineers and have decided the goals of basic engineering education as changing to student oriented education, enhancing the field adaptation capability, improving the problem solving ability and introducing engineering design courses. For achieving the foregoing goals, we have changed several basic engineering courses. Mathematics, science courses, computer related courses, English, communication skill related courses are strengthened, but general college education courses are reduced. We also have encouraged students to participate the classes actively and study efficiently, think logically and creatively. For the operational details, we have tried to impose less courses to freshmen and sophomores, to impose the prerequisite courses, to activate summer and winter schools. Finally, we have tried to find the ways to support continuous improvement on the basic engineering education.
This paper is a study on the perception of current competency and expected competency of engineering freshmen by extracting core competencies acquired from university education. It also aims to suggest proper way for engineering university education. This study extracts competencies in the following five areas as core competencies: 'knowledge on major area', 'cultural ability', 'foreign language ability', 'basic learning ability', 'intercommunication ability'. To achieve this purpose, this study surveyed 'C' university engineering department freshmen (584 students) with questionnaires about their perception of core competencies. The results are as follows. First, engineering freshmen perceived current competencies were weak in every area, especially their capacities in 'foreign language ability' area were perceived to be weakest. Their demand for education is the highest in 'foreign language ability' area, and the second higher in 'knowledge on major area'. Secondly, there exists meaningful difference between perception of current competency and expected competency depending on the gender, high school department (science/liberal arts), high school location, types of college admissions, and types of mathematics in NAST. According to these results, this study suggests enhancement of foreign language (English) education in engineering department, design and implementation of various educational program to overcome individual difference, promoting importance of competencies in the 'cultural abilty' and 'intercommunication abilty', necessity of continuous adjustment and complementation for engineering educational program through accumulation of feedback processes, activation of career education through engineering education and special programs.
In the current information-based society, information and communication technology(ICT) is very important for an individual, a society, and a nation. Especially, for a nation, ICT-related industries are forming an important part of a nation's economy. Also, unlike other industries, ICT-related industries do not require various infrastructures, and have an advantage of being developed with a few talented persons in a short period of time. In this sense, identification and education of gifted children in IT become an essential task of a nation's future. In the past, selection of the gifted children was based on paper tests. However, paper tests incurred various side effects such as private education. Since 2013, observation-recommendation system instead of paper tests has been fully adopted. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the validity of observation-recommendation admission system of the gifted children in IT. For this research purpose, the gifted children in gifted science education center attached in a university at Seoul become the focus of the samples. Their entrance score ranking and graduation record raking are compared for analysis of validity of admission system. After statistical analysis, there is a meaningful correlation between entrance score ranking and graduation record ranking for the gifted children in IT. It means that the higher entrance score ranking, the higher graduation record ranking. The analysis results are expected to be valuable baseline data for deciding usefulness of observation-recommendation admission system.
The objective of the current study is to establish the CQI procedure of leadership outcome education, which is emphasized in engineering education accreditation. Leadership includes many program outcomes, especially soft skills, such as communication skill, team work skill, and etc. This paper studied leadership education program in Yeungnam University. In particular, this research was conducted by using focus group interviews with experts and working level staffs of relevant organizations for the analysis of Yeungnam University curriculum and non-curriculum courses related to leadership education and for the preparation of leadership education CQI method. In addition, we conducted leadership competence diagnosis, leadership education demand survey and satisfaction level survey on the leadership camp participants. Interviews with experts, lecturers and focus group of Dale Carnegie Research Institute Daegu branch that administered the progress of leadership camp were conducted along with analysis of education contents through non-participation observation method during camp period and participant students interviews. The conclusions are summed up as follows: To educate global leaders in true meaning, first, psychological level competence strengthening method and study completing ability improvement method should be considered simultaneously. In particular, for non-capital region universities, emphasis should be given to education for self-confidence and vision establishment. Second, leadership education methods of mid/long term and systematic curricular and extra-curricular type should be pursued. For instance, with the use of engineering design subject completing system, leadership education can be consolidated to engineering subject courses with engineering design projects or the system of mentor-pupil among earlier leadership camp participants and later participants may be utilized. Third, it is determined necessary to pursue and realize practical methods of conducting various intramural leadership related education activities in mid/long term perspective by organizing leadership education advisory group consisting of major, departments and intramural and extramural relevant organization authorities that focus on leadership education.
Peer relationships in young students' communities are one of the important factors influencing the cognitive and affective domains of learning. Moreover, students who join the special program for gifted students possess differential peer relationships from the students in general classes. This study aims to explore the differences of 5th grade five science-gifted students' peer relationships between students in special classes for gifted students and general classes. Five students in the special program for gifted students, managed by the Office of Education in a southern city, participated in this study. Social network analyses were utilized to explore participants' peer relationships; the students' homeroom teacher was interviewed to explore the contextual and in-depth characteristics of gifted students' peer relationships. The results illustrated four cases of peer relationships: (1) smart loner (2) my study mate (3) I'm the best in my class, and (4) a good friend anywhere. This study identified that the gifted students possessed diverse peer relationships in both the special program and general classroom. In addition, this study suggests that the program for gifted students needs to be specially designed based on the gifted students' peer relationship.
