  • The purpose of this research was to compare structural organization of North Korean English textbooks pre and post North Korean 2013 curriculum revision. 5 revised textbooks were selected and compared with old textbooks. First, revised textbooks are dramatically changed into colored printed edition. Second, there appears phrases related to Kim Jong Un for the very first time in the preface. Third, while old textbooks emphasized only reading and writing skills, new textbooks integrate 4 skills. Fourth, new textbooks follow united organization system according to the kinds of school; 7 sub skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation for general high middle textbooks and 5 sub skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, English in Use for the first high middle textbooks. Also, new textbooks integrate English and other subject contents such as science, geography or computer. Finally, the changed structure organization of new textbooks seems to be similar with the ones of English books in the reference which is presented for the first time in North Korean textbooks.

  • Books on world geography, so called "萬國地誌" had an important influence on changing Koreans' views of the world and the nation through the introduction of new world geographical knowledge during the period of modern enlightenment(1894~1910). "小學萬國地誌" was published in 1895 by Hakbu as an early world geography textbook. This study sought to discuss the significance and influence of "小學萬國地誌" by focusing on its contents organization and description style. The findings are as follows. The six regional contents organization adopted the modern regional geographical method by regional scale classification, describing the human geography based on the physical geography, comparing regional characteristics or studying the relationship between human and the nature. In addition, this textbook was written using the kukhanmun style that displays several characteristics of modern printing culture. Many geographical names were written in Korean characters and geographical knowledge was accepted actively from the modern world, subsequently contributing to the generalization of geographical knowledge. This textbook led to the transition of the Koreans' worldview from a China-centric focus by providing practical and specific knowledge about the world, toward the Korean modernization based on the multiple ideologies of social Darwinism and the advent of enlightenment, imperialism and nationalism.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the tendency of inquiry of earth science content presented in North Korean textbooks of the 2013 National curriculum using Romey's method, and to help use as basic data for better understanding earth science education in North Korea. The content of earth science in the text, figure, question, and activity index of textbooks of Natural Science 1 and 2, Chosun Geography 2 of elementary junior high school, and of Geography 1 of advanced junior high school were all analyzed using Romey's method. The results of this study were as follows: First, the atmospheric science question and the astronomy text showed the tendency of inquiry type. Second, the proportion of oceanography was relatively small. Third, there were many non-inquiry questions or excessive inquiry questions, and both types of questions needed to be balanced. Fourth, there were a tendency that did not emphasize inquiry learning. Finally, the quantitative and qualitative level of inquiry tendency should be improved. In this paper, we propose to use a qualitative method when analyzing earth science content in North Korean textbooks, and suggested that we should further study the comparative analysis of inquiry tendency of earth science content using South and North Korean textbooks.

  • The earth science curriculum and textbooks of the secondary school in South Korea and North Korea were analysed comparatively with the modified TIMSS curriculum frameworks. In the secondary school of North Korea, earth science is not provided with separate subject, but partly taught in geography. Geography is taught by two hour per week in the first to fifth grade of secondary school. Especially the first and the fifth grade geography are deeply related to earth science. The major aim of earth science education in South Korea is to develop creative problem solver having with interest and curiosity in searching natural phenomena and with basic science concepts and inquiry process skills. But on the other hand the aim of geography education of North Korea is to cultivate communist revolutionists who are faithful to IL-Sung Kim and Jung-IL Kim. In both Koreas the category of 'earth feature' and 'earth process' are dealt a lot, but 'earth in the universe' is rarely taught in North Korea, which suggests that separate subject of astronomy is instructed in the North. Generally the scope and sequence of earth science of North Korea comes under those of middle school of South Korea. Especially discrepancy in level of meteorology and astronomy area between North and South Korea is great.

First, The World Geography textbooks are given too much emphasis on cognitive domain. This overevaluation is due to the fact that official World Geography curriculum is concentrated in cognitive domain. Second, Travelogs can be effectively used for reinforcing affective domain in World Geography education. They can reinforce the various attitudes and values that students need. I hope that this study could activate discussion on affective domain and graphic skills in geography education.

  • This paper purposes to provide a new perspective for better development of geography texts. For this purpose, we have applied spatial cognition development theory to children's drawings. We have suggested that children's spatial operation ability has three development stages according to their age: topological space, projective space, euclidean space. This study turns out that Piaget and Inhelder's spatial concept development theory is on the right track. However, we make clear that their division according to the age is not always accurate due to children's individual differences. These findings have educational implications as the following: First, it is dubious that most children can understand pictures, pictorial maps and illustrations in the third grader's textbook. Second, current textbooks require pictorial map understanding and drawing to third grade students and map drawing to fourth grade students. However, according to this study, the placement of these tasks are not fit for children's developmental stage because both tasks correspond to euclidean space operation. Therefore, we should remove them from the textbook for children at the age.

  • The aim here is to analyse the system of description of GIS in all of the high school textbooks passed with the official approval, to find the degree to which teachers understand about GIS, and to consider the present condition of GIS instruction. Most of the authors of textbooks generally underestimate importance of GIS, and there is difference among their awareness. In the system of description of GIS, there are only a few kinds of textbooks in which explanation of GIS is made coherently from the purpose of instruction aim through the chapter summary and to overall test in both of the Korean Geography and the World Geography. This trend is due to the degree of distribution of the GIS specialists in writing a textbook while the other texts books shows just a brief introduction of GIS concept. Although there is the limit for teachers to study how to teach GIS due to its very technological aspect as well as few previous training and teacher's guide. Thus it is evident that about a half of teachers who responded taught high school students without a knowledge on GIS, and a few of them even never referred to that concept. These facts may negatively affect the status of a geography in the society of information. For the solution of these issues, it is considered how to repair the description system and its contents. Besides, the variation among textbooks is reduced at the further revision of the 7th curriculum. And the printed matters of GIS are sufficiently provided for the teachers to use as their teaching aids. It is desirable that the GIS instruction models should be further developed for college education, and the programs for the on-the-job teachers training should be arranged. Besides, the previous training for the on-the-job teachers should be achieved more practically with enough time before the revision of curriculum.

  • This study has analyzed and revised the geomorphological terms in the Reference Guide for Geography Textbook Compilation issued by the Ministry of Education in 2017. The current geography glossary is composed of 1,150 terms of which 24.4 percent are geomorphological one. They also amount to 52.2 percent of the terms registered in the physical geography glossary. The number of terms in coastal landforms is the maximum of fifty-eight, while the one in weathering landforms is the minimum of six. This suggests a large difference in the number of terms among landform types originating from varying geomorphic processes. A lot of ordinary words are included in the geomorphology glossary. Since they have been already registered in the Korean Standards Dictionary which is another reference guide for textbook compilation, it is appropriate to delete them out of the geomorphological terms. The geomorphology glossary also contains difficult terms written in Chinese characters, inappropriate terms and even incorrect terms which are likely to lead to misconception on landforms. The revised glossary consists of 284 geomorphological terms in which 101 terms are newly added after taking all the problems into consideration.
